Extraneous variables are those variables that are unknown or unforeseen at the start of a study that has a bearing on the results of the study.

Methods used to control extraneous variables:

• Making sure that the samples are random ensures that the extraneous variables are standardized across the different groups. This makes it so that the effect of the extraneous variable becomes reduced than in cases where the extraneous variable is present only in certain sections of the sample (Behi & Nolan, 1996). Randomization reduces the effect of extraneous variables best where the sample size is large.
• Statistical control. Specific statistical tools can be used to control the effect of extraneous variables in a study (Behi & Nolan, 1996). One such tool is the analysis of covariance (ANOVA).
• Matching the different groups of extraneous variables to ensure uniformity can help reduce the effect of the extraneous variable on the study (Behi & Nolan, 1996).

Read chapter 29 and 30 of the class textbook and review the attached PowerPoint presentations.  Once done answer the following questions;     

1.  In your own words and quoting the appropriate evidence-based references define what is family and the different types of family.  Please tell us what type of family do you belong?  

2.   How do you feel that the value system differs from that of your parents? And from your grandparents? Why have these changes come about? As practicing nurses, why is it important to consider these generational differences in values and beliefs?     

3.  Discuss traditional health beliefs & practices that have been passed down by families. Are these cultural or regional beliefs? Do you continue to practice any of the same things? Why or why not?    

4.  How do you believe that family members and their upbringing have affected your own health or could affect a patient/individual’s health? Discuss positive & negative effects as well as physical, emotional & spiritual health. Give some examples.

To complete this Assessment:

Reflect on your current healthcare organization and think about potential opportunities for evidence-based change.

Identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of an evidence-based change.

Develop a PICOT question to address this issue.

Using the keywords from the PICOT question, search at least four different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles at the systematic-reviews level.

Create a PowerPoint presentation by addressing the following in 8–14 slides:

Briefly describe your healthcare organization, including its culture and readiness for change. (You may opt to keep various elements of this anonymous, such as your company name.) (1–2 slides)

Describe the current problem or opportunity for change. Include in this description the circumstances surrounding the need for change, the scope of the issue, the stakeholders involved, and the risks associated with change implementation in general. (2–3 slides)

Propose an evidence-based idea for a change in practice using an evidence-based practice approach to decision-making. Note that you may find further research needs to be conducted if sufficient evidence is not discovered. (3–5 slides)

Be sure to include a description of the PICOT question that you developed for your search, and which databases you consulted.

Describe your plan for knowledge transfer of this change, including knowledge creation, dissemination, and organizational adoption and implementation. (1–2 slides)

Describe the measurable outcomes that you hope to achieve with the implementation of this evidence-based change. (1–2 slides)

Be sure to provide APA citations for the supporting evidence-based, peer-reviewed articles that you selected to support your thinking.
