There are many strategies that I can use to create change in my current workplace. One of them is to develop alliances and social support systems that can legitimize, nurture, and stimulate related change-actions. Such alliances and social support will focus on healthcare institutions that legitimize and foster healthy life-style in work setting. In this perspective, I will use the power of nursing organizations and establish a broad coalitions to maximize workplace protections for nursing staff, patients, and other stakeholders. Nursing organizations represent an influencing force that can generate demand and pressure for health-supportive environment and policies that benefit healthcare staff and patients.

            The second strategy I will use is empowerment. That is, I will use the arm of empowerment to equip co-workers and others with the knowledge, values and skills that inspire real action for grow.  

The third strategy has to do with the change for transforming the culture. This approach calls for personal involvement. Consider yourself as the principal driven force that leads to change.  That is, imagine how you can play a dynamic, an active role in altering your culture. By embracing this mind-set, ‘when you put skin in the game, you become the change that transforms the culture’

Zolierek (2012), defined advocacy as using “one’s position to support, protect, or speak out for the rights and interests of another”.  As nurses, it is in our pledge and scope of practice to advocate and protect the safety and rights of all of our patients. A change in the workplace culture would increase patient safety and patient satisfaction. Healthcare is changing and we must be able to adapt and change along with facing the challenges that come with change. To make a change, we need to create an environment that will infuse energy and commitment to the team and the whole organization. The first step in advocating for the transforming the culture is actually being the change. We must each understand the power, influence, and the ability to see and understand the culture in which we each work and how we can play a role in inspiring and transforming the culture. The second step would be to embrace the opportunity. This would be stepping out of our “comfort zone” and not letting fear or embarrassment confine us but we step out with excitement. We should provide positive effects to each of the individuals we are influencing. Be a role model and mentor. A third step is being a team player. Allow opportunities for feed-back or one-on-one conversations. We should create an environment for our team to have to room to learn, grow, and be encouraged by new ideas.

Advocacy is an important part of the health car field. Advocacy is the act of supporting a cuase. There are many skills and strategies that be utilized to be a successful advocate at home and in the workplace. A specific skill that needs to be used is communication. By communicating, you will be able to bring individuals together to address any issues or concerns that anybody may have. Communication does not just have to be verbal, it can also involve electronic communication as well. With communicatin, you will want to make sure that all informatin is factual. Another skill that is important is collaboration. By collaborating, you will be forming a relationship with co-workers and peers. By collaborating, it enables you to focus on one particular problem and to achieve a common goal. Another effective way to create change in the workplace and be a successful advocate is to continue education. By continuing education, it allows you to be an advocate for your patients. It also allows you to familiarize yourself with new treatments and enables you to properly treat and educate your patients.

As a way of demonstrating completion of this course requirement, you must submit, in writing, field logs that detail certain aspects of the event. The template for field experience logs is below.

·  Each event log should be three to five double-spaced pages of text.

·  Provide only a brief summary of the event itself.

·  The analysis section should be 550 to 800 words, and be the most developed component of the report. In the analysis section, you can write about the process of policy being made at this event, and/or you can write about the actual health policy issue being discussed/considered.

·  Your analysis should reference at least two sources. They can be from the learning materials in this course or other sources, but should be current (within the last 3 months).

·  Use APA format for citations and references.

Lewin’s Change Theory has three concepts that includes “driving forces,” “restraining forces,” and “equilibrium.” As the driving force implies, there are forces that push or cause things to change, shifting the equilibrium. Restraining forces fight against the driving forces which also causes shifts in equilibrium. Equilibrium can be described when no changes occur due to equal amount of force applied. There are three stages in his theory and that is “unfreezing,” “change,” and “refreezing.” Unfreezing is getting out of the rut of behaviors that are not healthy or productive. This requires fortitude to break out of the individual mindset and group conformity. This can be accomplished by either increasing the driving forces that direct behaviors away from the current norm or by decreasing the restraining forces that negatively affect movement away from equilibrium. A third alternative would be a combination of both. The change stage is producing growth and moving to a new level. It is evidenced by new thought, feeling and/or behavior changes. The refreezing stage is making the new patterns set as the new normal. Once they are “frozen,” it helps to prevent falling back into old unhealthy patterns (Change Theory, 2011).

Imogene King: Goal Attainment Theory has an emphasis on interaction theory vs systems theory. The concepts are based on an open system framework that honors nursing as a major system within the health care system, and places high emphasis on interpersonal processes. In the conceptual framework are three systems; the Personal (individual), Interpersonal (individuals interacting with each other) and the Social where groups of people in a community or society share common goals, interests, and values and is studied as a whole vs isolated parts. The practice of nursing is differentiated from other healthcare professions in that interpersonal systems are in place and this is reflected in the nurse-client relationship. The individual is viewed as a spiritual being, rational thinker, and records own history through own language, and expresses individual needs, wants, and goals. Humans have three fundamental needs: access to health information, illness prevention, care in times of illness. Health is dependent on continuous adjustment to stressors in the internal and external environments with use of ones resources to achieve maximum potential (Gragera, 2013).

Theory for EBP Project

The Goal Attainment Theory seems to be the best fit for the Capstone project. Results of screening and referrals develop into IHPs and IEPs that are tailored to the individual’s needs. This would seem to fit best with engaging the entire intraprofessional team in working with the student and the family in implementing interventions.

When looking at the two theories you shared, I would probably most closely align myself with Imogene King’s Goal Attainment Theory. Isabel recently earned certifications offered by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the American Organization of Nurse Executives for nurse managers and leaders. She was especially proud of this accomplishment and was confident it would serve her well as she continued her career. At a conference last week, she had found herself talking with a colleague about certification. To her surprise, her colleague suggested that she look into certification through the Project Management Institute. It had not occurred to Isabel that she might need or want that type of certification, but upon further reflection she could see how important it was to be able to manage projects effectively. She wondered how pursuing this type of certification might further her professional development and lead to new opportunities down the road. At the very least, she decided it was worth exploring further.

As you are aware, numerous nursing organizations offer opportunities for professional development, community service, and information gathering. There are also many certifications you can obtain through professional societies or organizations. Certifications recognize an individual’s specialty area knowledge and skills and can lead to professional empowerment. By obtaining certifications, you can help improve your quality of practice and increase your earning potential.

In this Discussion, you consider development opportunities afforded through professional associations and examine how earning certifications can advance your career.

To prepare:

  • Reflect on your professional goals. These goals may relate to the practicum professional development objectives you established in Week 1, but you are encouraged to take a broader view of what you would like to accomplish in the immediate future, as well as five or 15 years from now. Identify at least one goal that is especially important to you.
  • Think about the benefits of becoming involved in professional organizations and obtaining certifications.
  • If you already have a specialty or clinical certification, reflect on how this has impacted the achievement of your professional goals thus far.
  • Review information about two or more of the professional organizations listed in the Learning Resources. Consider the following questions:
    • As you explore each organization’s website, review the mission, vision, and value statements. Also examine the strategic plan, if possible. How do these align with your interests and your professional goals?
    • Investigate whether the organization offers networking opportunities with fellow professionals. Is there a local or regional chapter you could join?
    • What are the potential benefits of obtaining a certification through each organization? Examine the criteria for certification.
    • Evaluate your readiness and desire to become certified through each organization. What hesitations, if any, do you have?
    • How and why might this certification be useful to you and/or enhance your professional development?

Post on or before Day 3 a description of one or more of your professional goals. Explain a certification provided by a professional organization that would be of interest to you. Explain how and why this additional certification would be useful to you and/or enhance your professional development. Evaluate your readiness to obtain this certification, noting any reservations you may have.
