Sources of information may include journals, textbooks, Internet information (must be scholarly or government sites; no wikipedia), research documents, personal interviews (experts), or other appropriate reference material.

Nearly all subjects, even clinical topics will often involve some type of controversy.  You are to present all sides (pro and con) and weigh in with your opinion.  Your opinion, however, must be supported by facts.

You will need to prepare a research paper that includes a minimum of 6-pages, 10-12-pt font, 1-inch margins, that is typed and double-spaced.  Please limit your papers to no more than 10-pages.  Included in your paper is to be a cover page and a bibliography of your sources (pages not included in minimum).  APA is the preferred method for citations (APA, 6th edition). Your paper should be organized by the following large sections: Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Discussion, and Conclusion. In addition to content, format, logical organization of ideas, grammar and spelling counts.

 

 Adhering to ethical principles and protection of human subjects are  important considerations in all forms of research. How stringent or similar  should these ethical principles be to the standards placed on the conduction of clinical and/or educational research? Offer examples where controversy exists regarding application of ethical principles in evidence-based practice projects, best practices in education versus clinical research? Be sure to address HIPAA and FERPA depending on your focus – clinical practice vs academic education.  

 

I graduated from my ADN program in 2014, and since then I have had some great career opportunities. However, my goal and passion has always been working as an L&D nurse. I found it challenging to fulfill my passion and goal since the hospitals I was looking to work at required a BSN. I have had many co-workers and former classmates complete their RN-BSN program through GCU; all have had wonderful things to say about the program and saw their careers soar. With their encouragement and time needed to save financially, I have decided that I needed to take the next steps in obtaining my BSN.

This is my first online class/program, so I am a little worried and concern about the structure of the program and expectations. I am also concerned with my ability to stay on task and complete everything I need to be successful in a timely fashion. But after reading 7 Habits of Highly Effective Nursing Students (Moore, 2015) and Balancing Work and Nursing School (All Nursing Schools, n.d.), I will create a working space for me to complete my school work, a calendar for assignments and proactively stay ahead of schedule.

I know that as long as follow Strategy #8-Focus on Your Nursing Career Goal (All Nursing Schools, n.d.) and have my goal and passion align, I will stay on track and be successful.

Part 1: Evaluate the culture of City Hospital HIM Department:

Background: City Hospital HIM Department employs 17 people. Only 1 employee is male, Ralph, and he is 74 years old and processes the disclosure documentation for the department. He keeps to himself because he feels that the other employees think he is slow and they have nothing in common. Seventeen-year-old Celine is a recent high school graduate who is going to school at night and enjoys social media and has a best friend who is getting married to his boyfriend this summer and it’s all Celine talks about. Teal is a 27-year-old hard worker who is always 7 minutes late for work in the morning and spends the first 15 minutes at her desk putting on her make-up for the day. When she does finally start working she gets a lot done and out performs the others in her department. Teal speaks English as a second language and is very hard for others in the department to understand. David is a 54-year-old department manager who is putting in his time before his retirement in 4 months. David is a family man who believes strongly in the beliefs of his church and often shares his church doctrine with his employees during their annual evaluations.

What do you think are the two most prevalent age-related changes that affect the lifestyle of the elderly? How would you help an elderly patient adjust to the two changes you identified?

One of the most prevalent age related changes I have noticed over my career is changes to the skin. Skin loses elasticity over time and decreased mobility can cause pressure ulcers to the patient. This is compounded as aging also reduces the ability for wounds to heal. Pressure ulcers affects the patient’s quality of life and can increase morbidity and mortality (Mervis, Phillips, 2019). It is important for elderly people to inspect their skin routinely and notice any breaks in the integrity of the skin. Teaching for these individuals would include making sure they reposition at least every hour while sitting or lying to offset pressure points. It is also important to have the elderly inspect pressure points over bony prominences. 

The second age related change that many elderly patients face is bowel function. Aging can cause decreased motility of the GI system and dietary changes affect the amount of fluids the individual have in their body. Many elderly people are very aware of the frequency and consistency of their bowel movements and become anxious when they do not have a bowel movement at least daily. It is important with these individuals to encourage a high fiber diet with adequate fluid consumption. The addition of dietary supplements such as fiber supplements or stool softeners can also help these individuals with regularity in their bowel functions.
