For this Discussion, you focus on strategies for facilitating the group process.

To prepare:

· Review the information in this week’s Learning Resources regarding the stages of group formation, problematic roles individuals play in groups, and strategies for facilitating and maintaining positive group collaboration. In particular, review Learning Exercise 19.14 of the course text.

· Reflect on various groups with which you have been or are currently involved. Select one specific group to analyze for the purposes of this Discussion. Identify the purpose or task that the group is or was meant to perform.

· Consider the four stages of group formation (forming, storming, norming, and performing). How would you describe the progression between stages? Is there a stage in which you believe your group is or was “stuck”?

· Consider the task or group-building role you normally play in a group setting. How could you apply the information from the Learning Resources to improve your group participation and facilitation, as well as the functioning of the group as a whole?

· In addition, think about which individuals within your group (including yourself) may fall into problematic roles such as the Dominator, the Aggressor, or the Blocker. How have you and your group members addressed the enactment of these roles and its impact on interactions? With information from the Learning Resources in mind, what strategies would you apply now or going forward?

Post a description of a group with which you have been or are currently involved. Assess where the group is in terms of the four stages of group formation. If you are reflecting on a past experience, explain if your group moved through all four stages. Describe the task or group-building role you typically play, or played, in this group. Then, explain what strategies you, as a leader, can apply to better facilitate the group process and address any problematic individual roles in the group.

“Nurses are often placed in situations where they are expected to be agents for patients, physicians, and the organization simultaneously, all of which may have conflicting needs, wants, and goals.” Marquis, p. 84.

     You are the evening shift charge nurse of the postanesthesia care unit (PACU).  You have just admitted a 32-year-old woman who 2 hours ago was thrown from a Jeep in which she was a passenger.  She was rushed to the emergency department and subsequently to surgery, where cranial burr holes were completed and an intracranial monitor was placed.  No further cranial exploration was attempted because the patient sustained extensive and massive neurologic damage. She will probably not survive your shift.  The plan is to hold her in the PACU for 1 hour and, if she is till alive, transfer her to the intensive care unit (ICU). 

     Shortly after receiving the patent, you are approached by the evening house supervisor, who says that the patient’s sister is pleading to be allowed into the PACU.  Normally, visitors are not allowed into the PACU when patients are being held there only temporarily, but occasionally exceptions are made.  Tonight, the PACU is empty except for this patient.  You decide to ben the rules and allow the young woman’s sister to come in.  The visiting sister is near collapse; it is obvious that she had been the driver of the Jeep.  As the visitor continues to speak to the comatose patient, her behavior and words make you begin to wonder if she is indeed the sister. 

     Within 15 minutes, the house supervisor return and states, “I have made a terrible mistake.  The patient’s family just arrived, and they say that the visitor we just allowed into the PACU is not a member of the family, but it’s the patient’s lover.  They are very angry and demand that this woman not be allowed to see the patient. 

     You approach the visitor and confront her in a kindly manner regarding the information that you have just received.  She looks at you with tears streaming down her face ans says, “Yes, it is true.  Mary and I have been together for 6 years.  Her family disowned her because of it, but we were everything to each other.  She has been my life, and I have been hers.  Please, please let me stay.  I will never see her again.  I know the family will not allow me to attend the funeral.  I need to say my goodbyes.  Please let me stay.  It is not fair that they have the legal right to be family when I have been the one to love and care for Mary.”

Many factors influence maternal health. In many countries, an unacceptable number of women die in childbirth or shortly after giving birth. As discussed by Dr. Leslie Mancuso in this week’s first media presentation, culture and religious beliefs influence childbirth practices.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review      Case 6, “Saving Mothers’ Lives in Sri Lanka.” 
• Review      Dr. Mancuso’s comments on cultural beliefs that influence maternal health.      

In addition, consider the following questions:

• What      cultural and historical features of Sri Lanka contributed to the success      of the country’s maternal health program?
• What      are some assumptions that a person might make about you based on your      appearance or cultural background? All cultural diversity is not about      ethnicity, religious affiliation, or traditional backgrounds. When you      consider what cultural issues affect you and/or your community, think      about whether you represent diversity of another kind, such as; rural      versus urban, east coast versus west coast, employed in a small hospital      versus a large research center, or providing nursing practice to young      versus elderly, acute care versus clinic care or mental health care. Each      of these “types” of diversity contribute to you as a person and how      you practice nursing.

There are numerous ways to communicate with the stakeholders as well as the executives of the hospital. Communication is an important means of transmitting information as well as making other understand oneself. As a leader, I would start sharing my outreach program vision by using written communication. This will help me share effectively and thoroughly through explaining how this program will benefit the entire community. I would also organize a meeting to provide a professional presentation concerning the program’s benefits. I would use non-verbal communication methodologies to make the community members see my vision like making eye contact, having an open stance and smiling among others. I would use effective verbal communication through speaking clearly as well as allow time for others to communicate (Huber, 2018). This will help communicate effectively my vision for the outreach program.

Strategic management may be described as organization management based on its vision. To accomplish this, one needs to develop a vision, set objectives, develop strategies, execute the strategies as well as evaluate the outcomes. I would use the strategic management process to make the outreach program vision a reality. In the written communication as well as the presentation I will ensure that my mission and vision of the outreach program are stated clearly to make sure that stakeholders and the executives understand the purpose of this program. Setting objectives mean explaining the program goal and creating an implementation strategy mean explaining my plan on how to reach the goals. After the executives and the stakeholders decide to execute the strategies for developing an outreach program, then I would evaluate the program effectiveness constantly (Huber, 2018). As a leader, using the strategic management will allow me understand the community needs, determine the community future and set achievable goals and plans.

There are a wide range of tools that can be used for outreach program and implementation of strategic management. Strategic management is defined as the process by which managers of the firm analyze the internal and external environments for the purpose of formulating strategies and allocating resources to develop a competitive advantage in an industry that allows for the successful achievement 00resources, processes and skills and also monitoring of action steps in order to cope with unpredictable internal and external factors. Management in this context therefore indicates the ability to manage the constant changing circumstances, which organizations have to face regularly. Strategic management is therefore said to “understand the strategic position of an organization, its strategic choices for the future and turning strategies into action.” Huber, D. (2014).  Strategic management is, in terms of decision making, not only in the organization of operation-based procedures but also includes more organizational, non- routine and more complex procedures.

 I will use stakeholder approach for the outreach program become reality. The idea of stakeholder approach to strategic management, suggests that managers must formulate and implement processes 00is to manage and integrate the relationships and interests of shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, communities and other groups in a way that ensures the long-term success of the firm. A stakeholder approach accentuates active management of the business environment, relationships and the promotion of shared interests. Stakeholder approach encourages management to develop strategies by looking out from the firm and identifying, and investing in, all the relationships that will ensure long-term success.
