There are many challenges facing the major religious traditions including: peer to peer networks, integration of religion and technological advancement (Bauwens, 2003). These challenges stem from the increasing interconnection of religions and cultures as well as the availability of information sharing. Nursing provides opportunity for unique encounters and challenges. The differences in culture and religion may intersect medical decisions on issues such as fertility, ethical termination of life at various stages, organ transplant, stem-cell research, and animal and environmental rights (Molloy, 2014). Working in the ICU, I often encounter challenges in both organ transplant (heart and lung) as well as futility of care and termination of adult life. People draw on their faith to help with decision making in these difficult circumstances. In these cases, it is important for the nurse to recognize and be respectful of potential religious differences. Learning of the different religions throughout this class will enable me to better understand and support decision making. The nurses’ role in facilitation of a healing environment and religious connection is integral, especially for the patient and family brought to the unfamiliar hospital environment. In my workplace we have various private quiet spaces, I direct people to these areas (if they prefer this space) for prayer and meditation as it is outside of the bustle of the ICU. In my 15 years of nursing experience I have found when people are able to connect with their faith, and feel supported by the multidisciplinary team, they are able to make more confident decisions about medical treatment. Though my personal beliefs and connection with God may be different than the people I encounter, this class has given me perspective. I will continue to be respectful of the space needed for prayer and meditation.

I identify as a Roman Catholic Christian. Working in a 32-bed cardiac surgery ICU at a large university hospital brings ethical challenges that may not be seen in other nursing specialties. Throughout my unit, I care for patients who have undergone high risk cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries, received Ventricular Assist Devices, heart and lung transplantation, or ECMO. Many of these patients have successful treatments, but the risks are high and occasionally I am faced with ethical challenges. With regards to advanced medical and surgical care, futile treatment and euthanasia, the Catholic Church has held a historically strong position. Euthanasia is against Catholic teaching, while “[it] is also permitted, with the patient’s consent, to interrupt these means, where the results fall short of expectations. But for such a decision to be made, account will have to be taken of the reasonable wishes of the patient and the patient’s family, as also of the advice of the doctors who are [especially] competent in the matter” (CAN, n.d., para. 8). Therefore, discontinuing treatment or withdrawing mechanical means of life support are not against the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Roman Catholics have strong associations with the sacraments and traditions. The sacrament “Anointing of the Sick” is occasionally brought to a patient for whom I am caring. There have been times when there is a plan to withdraw life support and this sacrament was offered. Families are invited to pray and offer support to the patient for peace and comfort at the time of suffering. This sacrament is not only for those who are actively dying but may also be done when a patient is diagnosed with a terminal illness. The anointing is believed to bring strength and peace to the person being anointed, and though God does not always heal the person physically this sacrament is strongly valued within the faith (Catholic Answers, 2013). A spiritual compass is provided to those who follow a religious path. It is important to be respectful of the differences and support each other in our journey through life.

This writing project includes a comprehensive application of the elements of critical reasoning that we are studying in this course. The main objective is to use the critical thinking strategies described in the course to analyze and evaluate contrasting arguments. You can preview the requirements for the final paper in the Week 8 assignment below.

This is not an opinion piece or persuasive essay. The goal is to present contrasting arguments using information from credible sources and to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these positions using content from the course.

As you put this together, are you following the critical analysis process that we emphasize in critical reasoning? This means fairly considering all research equally before reaching a conclusion.

Your rough draft should include 1–2 paragraphs for each of the following elements:

1. Introduction: Identify the issue/topic. Provide the necessary background and important recent developments. Define key terms and concepts.
2. Arguments and Counterarguments: Summarize the best arguments on both sides of the issue. Include relevant research from credible sources used to support each conclusion.
3. Evaluation of Critical Thinking: Assess the strength of the arguments and the quality of thinking surrounding this issue.
   • Identify weaknesses in critical thinking such as fallacies, rhetorical devices, vague language, and cognitive biases. Provide specific examples of how these weaknesses appear in arguments, using terminology and definitions from the course
   • Evaluate the quality of scientific and anecdotal evidence using the standards of inductive and deductive reasoning described in the course. Consider the quality of causal relationship, analogies, generalizations, and/or moral reasoning.
4. Conclusion: Analyze the totality of research and offer a critical thinker’s response to the issue. Identify your own position and experience with the issue and explain how your thinking of the subject has evolved as a result of your analysis.

The scenario I will be writing on is “A 14-year-old biracial male living with his grandmother in a high-density public housing complex”.

            Collecting patient data is a core step in the nursing process and healthcare professionals usually develop a relationship with their patients during the history and interviewing process ((Ball, Dains, Flynn, Solomon, & Stewart, 2019). I will first introduce myself to the patient and establish privacy. When interviewing the patient effective communication is important. It is necessary to establish a positive patient relationship by ensuring courtesy, comfort, connection, and confirmation.

          Teenagers are exposed to many external and internal struggles and are expected to cope with hormonal changes, puberty, social and parental forces, work and school pressures, and other problems of life. During adolescence, individuals may also be exposed to risky behaviors and need help in making the right decisions. As such, teenagers may be unwilling to speak with healthcare providers. There is, therefore, the need to establish privacy and providers must be sensitive to the needs and situation of the patient. Providing a safe place for the adolescent to speak freely is a goal of the healthcare provider (Ball et al., 2019). 

            The health assessment will be from head-to-toe and going through each system of the body. During the interview process, I will ask the patient open-ended questions regarding his health, to allow him to share more information, including his feelings, attitudes, and understanding of the subject. Examples of open-ended questions that may be asked to a 14-year-old include; 

Tell me about your living situation, and how are things at home?
Tell me about your friends, and what activities do you do with your friends?
What do you like or don’t like about your school?

          Risk assessment explores the behavioral and lifestyle changes and influences decisions regarding treatments (Wu & Orlando, 2015). Specific screening tools have been developed for gathering the psychosocial history of adolescents (Sullivan, 2019). The screening tool for adolescent issues is the Home, Education/Employment, Eating, Activities, Drugs, Sexuality, Suicide/Depression, and Safety (HEEADSSS). This interview format is flexible and designed for adolescents because physical and social threats are common during adolescent age.

Explain how to market the program to the population, and explain the ethical, legal, and economic factors that can affect the health of the population.

Preparation

Your team has succeeded in demonstrating the need for a health promotion and disease prevention initiative for the population identified by your Windshield Survey assessment. Now you need to develop a proposal for a wellness education program that will help bridge the gaps in health care service delivery.

Use the Capella library and the Internet to find scholarly and professional resources that will help you propose a wellness education program for the health concern of your population. Find at least four resources to use in this assessment. You may also want to review the previous assessments you completed in this course.

Requirements

Based on your Windshield Survey and Organizational Evaluation assessments, complete the following:

o The ethical considerations (such as justice, non-malfeasance, and duty) that can affect preventative care and health promotion.

o Local laws, federal laws, and the Affordable Health Care Act that can affect preventative care and health promotion.

o The potential economic impact of clinical prevention and health promotion related to health disparities of your population.
