Staying in discussion with your fellow consultants, what type of sample would you need to examine your question and learn more about your issue? What are the various types of sampling you could use, along with their advantages and disadvantages?

 

Week 4 TD 2 – Ethical Issues

 Read these two documents on ethical issues in research:

What are the ethical principles violated in the studies described in these documents? What are the implications of this information with respect to recruitment of human subjects in your Ironridge study? 

 

Look up the top ten ongoing humanitarian crises around the world.  Select one and write your discussion post on that crisis. 

For example:

One of the major ongoing international crises is the humanitarian  crisis in Yemen that has been fueled by war, political, economic, and  other social upheaval in the region.  The  focus of the assignment is to bring attention to an ongoing crisis that  appears to get little attention in the west but is considered one  of the worst humanitarian crisis in our time. We are concerned about the  humanitarian issues as it relates to the global health related issues. Read  up on current news reports on what is happening in the crisis you  selected.  For example if you selected the Yemen situation you would:

1. Discuss in what ways this complex humanitarian crisis is both a  local and an international event and your views on how various nations  have responded.
2. Look for a publicly available photo that depicts this man-made disaster.  Share the photo and give appropriate credit.
3. Briefly discuss what you think are the most urgent needs of the residents and citizens of nation
4. Do you think adequate attention is being paid to this crisis?  Why or why not?
5. Make an original post (290) that includes the photo, your  commentary on the photo, and that addresses the above questions  at least 2 scholarly references that includes the citation for the  photo. 

Evaluating Interdisciplinary Collaboration Skills

It is also a central tenet of your endeavors as a scholar-practitioner in this Walden University Master’s program. To succeed in your role as a nurse leader-manager, it is important to engage in ongoing development of collaborative skills and to help foster a culture that values collaboration.In Weeks 1 and 2 of this course, you analyzed your strengths and considered how to leverage these strengths for effective leadership. In a similar vein, this week you evaluate your strengths and areas for growth with regard to interdisciplinary collaboration.

To prepare:Review the competencies described in the Interprofessional Education Collaborative report and in Chapter 9 of the Hickey and Brosnan text.

As you reflect on the competency statements outlined for each domain, think about which ones reflect your strengths. Which competency statements point to areas for growth?Consider the benefit of working with interdisciplinary teams for addressing quality improvement initiatives.Conduct a search of the literature and select at least one article that illustrates the benefits of interprofessional collaboration for nurse leader-managers as it relates to improving quality.

Changes in culture and technology have resulted in patient populations that are often well informed and educated, even before consulting or considering a healthcare need delivered by a health professional. Fueled by this, health professionals are increasingly involving patients in treatment decisions. However, this often comes with challenges, as illnesses and treatments can become complex.

What has your experience been with patient involvement in treatment or healthcare decisions? 

In this Discussion, you will share your experiences and consider the impact of patient involvement (or lack of involvement). You will also consider the use of a patient decision aid to inform best practices for patient care and healthcare decision making.

Post a brief description of the situation you experienced and explain how incorporating or not incorporating patient preferences and values impacted the outcome of their treatment plan. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain how including patient preferences and values might impact the trajectory of the situation and how these were reflected in the treatment plan. Finally, explain the value of the patient decision aid you selected and how it might contribute to effective decision making, both in general and in the experience you described. Describe how you might use this decision aid inventory in your professional practice or personal life.

CASE STUDY: Family Member with Alzheimer’s Disease: Mark and Jacqueline

 Mark and Jacqueline have been married for 30 years. They have grown children who live in another state. Jacqueline’s mother has moved in with the couple because she has Alzheimer’s disease. Jacqueline is an only child and always promised her mother that she would care for her in her old age. Her mother is unaware of her surroundings and often calls out for her daughter Jackie when Jacqueline is in the room. Jacqueline reassures her mother that she is there to help, but to no avail. Jacqueline is unable to visit her children on holidays because she must attend to her mother’s daily needs. She is reluctant to visit friends or even go out to a movie because of her mother’s care needs or because she is too tired. Even though she has eliminated most leisure activities with Mark, Jacqueline goes to bed at night with many of her caregiving tasks unfinished. She tries to visit with her mother during the day, but her mother rejects any contact with her daughter. Planning for the upcoming holidays seems impossible to Mark, because of his wife’s inability to focus on anything except her mother’s care. Jacqueline has difficulty sleeping at night and is unable to discuss plans even a few days in advance. She is unable to visit friends and is reluctant to have friends visit because of the unpredictable behavior of her mother and her need to attend to the daily care.
