MICROBIAL APPLICATIONS AND VIROLOGY

Bioremediation is the use of organisms like bacteria, archea or fungi to metabolize pollutants. Instead of simply collecting the pollutant, bioremediation relies on living organisms to consume and break down the compound, turning it into a natural, harmless product. Address the following questions in essay format:

Research a microbe that can be used in bioremediation and provide the following information:

1) Provide the scientific name and identification of the bacteria that is used in bioremediation. How is it classified? Give a brief description of your bacteria. What is it’s normal environment?

2) Which biogeochemical cycle does the bacterium participate in (Carbon, nitrogen, or phosphorus cycling)? How is this important to its role in bioremediation?

3) How are bacteria as a whole being genetically modified to improve bioremediation?

3) What are some limitations to using bacteria for bioremediation?

Your case assignments are considered scholarly works. Your final work should include peer reviewed (scholarly) sources. 

Please keep in mind that you should not use sources such as “Answers.com” or “Wikipedia” or “Wikianswers.”  None of these are scholarly sources and they can be “modified” by any registered user which makes them unreliable. Upload your final word document to the SLP dropbox.

Describe one internal and one external method for the dissemination of your EBP project results. For example, an internal method may be the hospital board, and an external method may be a professional nursing organization. Discuss why it is important to report your results to both of these groups. How will your communication strategies change for each group?

Students are expected to initially address the discussion question by Wednesday of each week. Participation in the discussion forums is expected with a minimum total of three (3) substantive postings (this includes your initial posting and posting to two peers) on three (3) different days per week. Substantive means that you add something new to the discussion, you aren’t just agreeing. This is also a time to ask questions or offer information surrounding the topic addressed by your peers. Personal experience is appropriate for a substantive discussion and should be correlated to the literature.All discussion boards will be evaluated utilizing rubric criterion inclusive of content, analysis, collaboration, writing and APA. If you fail to post an initial discussion you will not receive these points, you may however post to your peers for partial credit following the guidelines above. Due to the nature of this type of assignment and the need for timely responses for initial posts and posting to peers, the Make-Up Coursework Policy (effective July 2017) does not apply to Discussion Board Participation.Discussion Prompt [Due Wednesday]A 50-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) presents to the office with what she describes as a “flare up”. The definition of a philosophy is having a personal and specific outlook and approach you can use to make decisions and take action. Your philosophy of nursing should include your beliefs and attitudes about nursing, being a nurse, your approach to caring for others. It can also include your attitudes about working in healthcare facilities, working as part of a team, or even how you feel about people in general.
