Workflow analysis aims to determine workflow patterns that maximize the effective use of resources and minimize activities that do not add value. There are a variety of tools that can be used to analyze the workflow of processes and clarify potential avenues for eliminating waste. Flowcharts are a basic and commonly used workflow analysis method that can help highlight areas in need of streamlining.

In this Assignment, you select a common event that occurs regularly in your organization and create a flowchart representing the workflow. You analyze the process you have diagrammed and propose changes for improvement.

To prepare:

· Identify a common, simple event that frequently occurs in your organization that you would like to evaluate.

· Consider how you would design a flowchart to represent the current workflow.

· Consider what metrics you would use to determine the effectiveness of the current workflow and identify areas of waste.

To complete:

Write a 3- to 5-page paper which includes the following:

· Create a simple flowchart of the activity you selected. (Review the Sample Workflow of Answering a Telephone in an Office document found in this week’s Learning Resources for an example.)

· Next, in your paper:

o Explain the process you have diagrammed.

o For each step or decision point in the process, identify the following:

§ Who does this step? (It can be several people.)

§ What technology is used?

§ What policies and rules are involved in determining how, when, why, or where the step is executed?

§ What information is needed for the execution of this step?

o Describe the metric that is currently used to measure the soundness of the workflow. Is it effective?

o Describe any areas where improvements could occur and propose changes that could bring about these improvements in the workflow.

o Summarize why it is important to be aware of the flow of an activity.

· Remember to include a cover page, introduction, and summary for your paper.

Using the Internet, conduct a search of autoimmune disorders. How many disorders can you find? What tissues can be attacked by your immune system? Select one autoimmune disease to summarize. What are the common signs and symptoms exhibited in a patient with this disease?

Consider a client you cared at the hospital and used telemedicine. Analyze the role of the technology used in the care of this client. Calculate the time-saving measures the technology provided. How was the technology able to improve the client’s outcome? You will need to research the specific technology in order to complete your full analysis.   As you consider this client, also develop a list of defining characteristics as if you were preparing to create a plan of care. Evidence-based practice is essential to providing safe, quality care to a diverse population in the acute care setting as well as in the community. Understanding the health care system at the local level is essential to consider when planning the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) because it helps those implementing changes understand and execute the move in an area of greatest need. Franklin and Hopson (2007) write that implementing evidence-based practice change in the community setting is challenging. Interventions that work in research or acute care setting are often very challenging to implement locally in the community setting due to the struggle with “building partnerships between clinical practitioners and researchers” (Franklin & Hopson, 2007, p. 379). Maintaining the effectiveness and reliability of interventions once moved to the community setting is difficult thus careful attention to the specific needs of the local community health care system is imperative (Franklin & Hopson, 2007).

Information from my course mentor that I will consider for my project is to ensure that I am following the hospital’s shared governance model to allow other nurses on the unit to have a voice in the project change (T. Brock, personal communication, August 20, 2019). The hospital where I am implementing my project change is a Magnet culture and uses a shared governance model when considering implementation of evidence-based practice change. My practice change does not only affect me, so it is imperative to share accountability and partnership with my unit manager, peers, and unit-based council members when implementing a project change on the unit for effective outcomes (T. Brock, personal communication, August 20, 2019).
