Describe strategies for safe, effective multidimensional nursing care for clients with acid-base imbalances.

Scenario

Tony is a 56-year-old, Hispanic male that presented to the Emergency Room with complaints of frequent, which he has been experiencing for the past four days. He states “I haven’t felt good for about a week, but couldn’t afford to miss work.” He complains of diarrhea, lightheadedness, and feeling exhausted. Past medical history includes asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Upon physical examination, you notice that Tony is pale, drowsy, and his respiratory rate is 28 breaths per minute and deep, heart rate 125 beats per minute, blood pressure 80/40 mm Hg, and pulse oximetry is 90% on room air. You notify the MD. He orders oxygen at 2 L via NC, a guaiac stool, and arterial blood gas.

Tony’s ABG results:

pH 7.28

PaCO2 – 32 mm Hg

PaO2 – 70 mm Hg

HCO3 – 18 mEq/L

Instructions

An important role of nursing is to provide health promotion and disease prevention. Review the 2020 Topics and Objectives on the Healthy People website. Choose a topic of interest that you would like to address, in conjunction with a population at-risk for the associated topic. Submit the topic and associated group to your instructor for approval.

Create a 15-20-slide PowerPoint presentation for your topic and focus group. Include speaker notes and citations for each slide, and create a slide at the end for References.

Address the following:

1. Describe the approved topic and associated population your group has selected. Discuss how this topic adversely affects the population. How does health disparity affect this population?
2. Explain evidence-based approaches that can optimize health for this population. How do these approaches minimize health disparity among affected populations?
3. Outline a proposal for health education that can be used in a family-centered health promotion to address the issue for the target population. Ensure your proposal is based on evidence-based practice.
4. Present a general profile of at least one health-related organization for the selected focus topic. Present two resources, national or local, for the proposed education plan that can be utilized by the provider or the patient.
5. Identify interdisciplinary health professionals important to include in the health promotion. What is their role? Why is their involvement significant?

Present and discuss a topic that you are interested in researching for this course. Explain why this topic interests you. Provide a brief background of the topic and speculate on arguments you could pose or problems you could solve. Additionally, draft a potential problem statement. Pose ideas and solicit feedback from your peers on your ideas.

In your responses, provide your peers with constructive criticism. Identify topics that might seem too broad or too narrow in focus. Identify possible challenges and offer ideas and solutions for improvement.

Course Design Outline

Course design is guided by curriculum outcomes, and courses must be developed to ensure that students are meeting the intended outcomes. Curriculum development and course design are influenced by many factors, such as program level and setting. The course design process begins with broad program or organizational outcomes and narrows to specific objectives to guide instruction. The purpose of this assignment is to develop a course design outline for one setting, using one health care practice. You will choose a health care practice for this assignment and build upon it throughout the course in order to achieve an understanding of the curriculum development process.  

Health Care Practice

Choose a health care practice and write an explanation of the practice that includes the following:

1. Summarize the health care practice you have selected.
2. Locate three evidence-based articles that support your health care practice choice.  Evidence-based articles chosen should not be older than 5 years.
3. Provide a rationale for each article you selected, including an explanation of how the article supports your health care practice choice.
4. Choose two different settings and explain how course design would be different for these settings.

Course Design Outline

Use your health care practice to create a course design outline based on evidence-based practice for one of your selected settings according to the suggested course design process provided in the Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty textbook.

How do you use informatics (not technology) in your nursing practice? What ethical issues have arisen or might arise from use of informatics in professional nursing?

Professor’s post: Nursing has come a long way since the era of Florence Nightingale.  Everywhere we look we are surrounded by technology and informatics.  Every day we are learning new processes in the world of nursing informatics. Due to this we need to be prepared and ready for any changes to informatics in the future.  Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Nursing Initiative (2016) stated that the Nurse of the Future “uses informatics, and knowledge of the larger healthcare delivery system, to support and enhance patient care” (p. 27).  Along with this we need to make ourselves aware of the challenges we might face, such as ethical issues that may arise from the use of informatics.
