Evidence based nursing practice is important to be incorporated in order to provide quality patient care. These practices have been studied and researched with the intent to standardize and improve health care. Nurses prepared at a baccalaureate level are expected to be more familiar with current evidenced based practice since evidence based practice is part of the curriculum. The BSN is able to apply the evidence-based practice into their care thus resulting in quality patient care and positive patient outcomes. Two barriers include the nurse’s level of education, and senior nurses not willing to change. The ADN degree focuses more on clinical knowledge and skills whereas the BSN in addition incorporates evidence based practices and focuses on holistic patient care. With continuing education, nurses would be provided with the tools they need to deliver current evidence based care. Applying EBP to the bedside has been proven to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. According to Melnyk (2016), “A good place to start is by improving the level of education of nurses and investing funds in continuing programs and evidenced-based practice mentors to equip them with the skills needed to consistently deliver evidence-based care.” Another barrier may include nurses of seniority “seasoned nurses” not wanting to change and adapt to the current evidence based practices. For example, the nurse with twenty years experience may not have learned to use the EBP approach and want to stick to their old ways because it is easier for them. This type of behavior may be difficult to change. Wallis (2012), stated that “In order to make a change happen the nurse leaders should place enough EBP mentors at the bedside who can work hand in hand with clinicians to help them learn and implement skills consistently.” Positive encouragement and consistency may be key in creating change with experienced nurses. All nurses should share the same goal of providing the best quality patient care.

• ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source – offers a wide range of materials in nursing, allied health, alternative and complementary medicine and the likes.  It has over 860 titles in full text and over 12,000 full text dissertations. Additionally, it gives access to online reference books, training tools and evidence-based nursing material from The Joana Briggs Institute.  It’s a good source for training videos and cultural reports that contributes to a better understanding of patient care.
• ProQuest’s Nursing & Allied Health Database – offers a mix of scholarly literature, clinical training videos, reference materials, and evidence-based resources, including dissertations and systematic reviews
• CINAHL Complete – is one of the strongest databases for nursing.  It offers research tools and access to nursing and allied journals.  It is comprised of more than 1300 journal titles and covers over 50 specialties in nursing. Additionally, it offers continuing education modules, research instruments and evidence-based care sheets
• Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), is a recognized global leader in evidence-based healthcare resources with a mission to support evidence-based practice in patient care globally. It is an international non-profit institute with over 70 collaborating centers throughout the globe. JBI has been promoting evidence-based practice to improve health care outcomes for over 10 years. The JBI evidence-based practice (EBP) database includes more than 3,000 records across seven publication types. These types include Evidence Summaries, Evidence-Based Recommended Practices, Best Practice Information Sheets, Systematic Reviews, Consumer Information Sheets, Systematic Review Protocols, & Technical Reports. The JBI EBP database consists of 7 full text publications that are arranged by 17 subject areas. The data base includes evidence summaries which is the largest category in the database and it brings together all the evidence about the search topic. This can be used for decision support and the PICOT approach beginning with a question and ending with a recommendation. Most of the new publications or frequently updated are the recommended practice or evidence summaries. JBI data base also includes systematic reviews written by members of the JBI.
