Determining how to make a capital investment decision using financial techniques is an essential aspect of long-term financial decision making.

To prepare for the Calculations, review the sections of Chapter 7 (“The Investment Decision”) from your Financial Management of Health Care Organizations: An Introduction to Fundamental Tools, Concepts, and Applications textbook that explain how to analyze capital investment decisions using financial techniques. (The pertinent section of Chapter 7 to review for each type of Calculation is identified in the below list of Calculations.) Then, read scenario #15 (Kaiser Oakland Practice) on page 329, which contains the information that you will use to populate and perform the Calculations.

Complete the following Calculations and submit your completed Calculations in an Excel spreadsheet with three tabs—one tab for each of the following Calculations and with that particular tab reflecting only the result of that particular Calculation.

1. Determine the payback for both projects.

Note: For detailed information on how to perform this type of Calculation, review the section “Payback Method” and Exhibit 7-2 “Cash flows for two alternative project investments” and Exhibit 7-3 “Calculation of payback year for two alternative investments” on pages 308 and 309, respectively, of the Financial Management of Health Care Organizations: An Introduction to Fundamental Tools, Concepts, and Applications textbook.

2. Determine the IRR for both projects.

Note: For detailed information on how to perform this type of Calculation, review the section “Unequal cash flows” and Exhibit 7-8 “Using Excel to Calculate the IRR…that yields unequal operating cash flows…” (This can also be used for equal cash flows) on page 318-319 of the Financial Management of Health Care Organizations: An Introduction to Fundamental Tools, Concepts, and Applications textbook.

3. Determine the NPV at a cost of capital of 12 percent for both projects. Which project should be chosen? Explain.

Population health is defined as “the health outcomes of a group of individuals, including the distribution of such outcomes within the group” (Kindig & Stoddart, 2003, p. 381). The American Public Health Association (APHA) defines public health nursing as “the practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences” (American Public Health Association [APHA], 2013, p. 2). The nurse must first analysis and collect data before beginning a program for the population they will working with. The resources that are available and needed must be determined.

For example, my father-in-law was just diagnosed with prostate cancer which has spread to his spine, hips, and shoulders, after researching I discovered there are no hospice programs available in the area they live. Talking with the population in that area they don’t feel they need hospice services. This is a small community that had once been a booming coal mining town. Since the coal mines have closed and the population is composed mainly of elderly people living on social security and the majority are related spiritual and moral beliefs are shared. When speaking with the community this is a generation who strongly believes in taking care of their own family members. This is a community that doesn’t feel the need for outside help so, if programs were implemented the community would mostly likely not use the programs.

Stakeholders play an import role in establishing public health programs. Health promotion and education is often supported through partnerships with employers, faith-based organizations, schools, and health care providers for implementation of initiatives and reinforcement of health information (CDC, 2014). Working with soup kitchens can help provide people with a more balanced, health promoting diet. Many churches are willing to provide areas to hold meetings and educational programs. The public health nurse can visit soup kitchens to provide education on diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure while helping the community make healthy choices from the food available.

1. A description of the community or population researched.
2. Explanation of current data available.
3. Summary of health needs identified through analysis of data.
4. Description of the data collection method planned for collecting secondary data.
5. Description of at least one key health issue/need from a nursing diagnosis, including the micro, meso, and macro level.
6. Summary of at least one social determinant of the health issue identified.
7. Brief outline of a plan for addressing the chosen health need.

Include up to five resources in your paper.
