Select a healthcare leadership issue listed in the weekly module. Please explain why you selected this topic, the limitations of your research, advantages/disadvantages of the topic you researched.  Complete an annotated bibliography that addresses the topic of choice. The annotated bibliography must include 10 references (webinar, journal article, and text book must be included in your references). Each annotated reference must be 7-10 sentences.

The Assignment

Review Appendix A, Sections I–V in Finkelman (2016).

1. Select one of the sections and share how your chief nurse executive demonstrates expertise in these competencies.  Your comments should be about the “highest nursing leader” in your organization. Typically this is the leader who represents nurses and nursing to the governing board.
2. In your own words, explain the differences between a transactional nursing leader and a transformational nursing leader. What one is more like your Nurse Executive?
3. Describe how the Nurse Executive “leads the charge” for transformational leadership in an organization where you work or have done prelicensure clinical experiences.
4. Take us on a journey where you complete a story about your nurse executive or leader and the change that either has occurred or is necessary.

Vulnerability may arise from individual, community, or larger population challenges and requires different types of policy interventions—from social and economic development of neighborhoods and communities, and educational and income policies, to individual medical interventions. Values affect how society views the vulnerable—as victims or sinners—and thus whether or not to provide public assistance. There are programs available to help vulnerable populations gain access to opportunities that support their full participation in society. Each provides a dedicated source of financial and technical assistance for projects and activities in their respective programming areas.Explore federal agencies that are concerned with Women’s Health. Which ones may be of benefit to vulnerable populations? Explore nonprofit agencies that are concerned with Women’s Health. Share resources aimed to benefit women in your state or area.

The Nurse as Advocate

Whether nurses are advocating for their patients, health care, and/or policies that improve people’s lives, the advocacy processes have commonalities that transcend the subject of their advocacy. There are also differences, although these differences may be more nuanced than obvious.

Tasks:

Write a 5-page brief to answer the following questions. Be sure to use APA guidelines for writing style, spelling and grammar, and citation of sources.

Read the following chapters from your course textbook:

• Taking Action: Nurse, Educator, and Legislator: My Journey to the Delaware Senate
• Taking Action: A Nurse in the Board Room

Answer the below questions:

• Describe what you believe to be the drivers for each of the individuals? What factors led them to become advocates?
• Discuss the challenges that each of them identified in their writings.
• Analyze these drivers and challenges and compare them with your own experience to date as an advocate. In what ways do you believe that you can expand your advocacy skills within the next five years?

Discussion: The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy Evaluation

In the Module 4 Discussion, you considered how professional nurses can become involved in policy-making. A critical component of any policy design is evaluation of the results. How comfortable are you with the thought of becoming involved with such matters?

Some nurses may be hesitant to get involved with policy evaluation. The preference may be to focus on the care and well-being of their patients; some nurses may feel ill-equipped to enter the realm of policy and political activities. However, as you have examined previously, who better to advocate for patients and effective programs and polices than nurses? Already patient advocates in interactions with doctors and leadership, why not with government and regulatory agencies?

In this Discussion, you will reflect on the role of professional nurses in policy evaluation.

To Prepare:

• In the Module 4 Discussion, you considered how professional nurses can become involved in policy-making.
• Review the Resources and reflect on the role of professional nurses in policy evaluation.

By Day 3 of Week 9

Post an explanation of at least two opportunities that currently exist for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy review. Explain some of the challenges that these opportunities may present and describe how you might overcome these challenges. Finally, recommend two strategies you might make to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities. Be specific and provide examples.
