Nursing 2023 Please Answer According The Comments. Thanks. 75 Words/Each. Reference Between 2013-2018( 75 Words In Each). Thanks

Comment 1 One professional journal that I would present my project would be the American Journal of Nursing 2023 Assignment

Comment 1

One professional journal that I would present my project would be the American Journal of Nursing because this journal contains many peered reviewed articles on issues that many nurses face today. According to the American Journal of Nursing (2018), it is one of the largest and oldest journals that contains information from all over the world. I believe that since it’s available in all parts of the world, it would be perfect for the dissemination of my project because the problem of pressure ulcer development occurs in health care settings all over the world.

The nursing conference that I would choose would be the 47th Global Nursing and Healthcare Education because after reading about its description, I believe that my project would fit well. According to the New York Events List, this conference would take place November 8-9, 2019 in San Francisco CA. I currently live and work in the Bay Area, so the location is not very far away. In the description of the conference, it specified that it “is a platform for nursing students, faculty, deans, researchers, and leaders to collaborate on topics affecting nursing education” (New York Events List, 2018, para 4). I would also be able to present the information through oral and poster presentations. All kinds of nurses with different degrees and level of expertise would be present, which is important because my project has the potential to affect patients in all types of health care settings.

Comment 2

One professional journal that I would present my capstone project idea would be The American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing. Also, I would like to present my capstone project idea to the Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing. By presenting to both journals would allow the research and information to be spread to a wider range of individuals and patients. This would allow for two different specialties of nursing to expand their knowledge about postpartum depression and how to provide the best patient care possible. These group of professionals and researchers could add to the information or even bring about new options that have not be incorporated yet.

There are two main conferences that I would present my capstone project, this includes Mental Health American Conference or NAMI National Convention. The website below provides a link to a year’s worth of mental health conferences that would be appropriate to present the information with. Conferences are a great way to present information because of the wide variety of attendees. Conferences also provide the individuals with a wide arraignment of resources as well. Attending conferences will allow individuals to expand their knowledge and improve their own practices.

Comment 3 DQ 2 Cind

Evidence based practice is essential to BSN-prepared RN because it is the incorporation of research, clinical expertise, and patient preference and values according to Lippincott (2016).  Incorporation of evidence-based research into my daily work day will provide solid foundation for safe patient care. I will try to invite conversation and debate as to the effectiveness of procedure changes and whether they provide the best care for our patient population. I will become active in my attendance of meetings on the unit that pertain to the welfare and health promotion of staff and the patients we care for. Attendance of conference meetings and unit program meetings on a regular basis will keep me current and up to date on proposed changes.

Obstacles would be the time that is required to attend these meetings which are typically held during the day time hours which, for me, is when I am sleeping. I do not know if I can change this aspect of my involvement in unit politics, but I may be able to read meeting notes to keep abreast of meeting content.

Comment 4

EBP is an essential component in the practice of BSN-prepared RN because they must base their practice on EBP. This is vital because many studies have been conducted to determine if certain practices are the best to use or not. Health care is constantly changing and growing and the way patients care is given changes as well. New and improved methods to increase patient outcomes are being discovered all of the time. In order to determine their effectiveness, multiple studies must be done. According to Salinas (2017), “EBP continues to change the way nurses care for their patients…high quality care is supported by evidence…[and] takes into account…best practice evidence, patient preferences, and clinical expertise” para 1-3). Salinas (2017) also mentioned that EBP teaches nurses how to improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, provide high quality care, and eliminate practices that are no longer effective. Although the article refers to students, it refers to BSN-prepared nurses as well because in reality, nurses will always be students. Nursing require lifelong learning.

Two ways that I would integrate evidence into my practice would be by as I complete my CEs required for my license, I would choose topics that would relate to the environment that I am in. For example, if I stayed at my facility, I would continue to learn about methods to improve wound care. This would include the types of treatments to used based on the assessment of the wound. Another way would be to attend meetings and conferences about patient care and take what I have learned and implement it in my practices.

Obstacles that could challenge this plan would be time to conduct more research and attend the conferences and meetings. Motivation would also be a major barrier as well. To minimize this impact, I would need to refine my time management skills, and find factors to help motivate me. One important factor would be to remind myself that I want to give my patients the best care possible and in order to do that, I must be willing to learn new things.

End of Life Care.

Choose 1 focal point from each subcategory of practice, education, research and administration and describe how the APRN can provide effective care in end of life management.

Using the American nurses association position statement, recommendations for improvement in end of life management focuses on practice, education, research and administration. Listed below are steps that nurses can take to overcome barriers in healthcare practice.

Practice

1. Strive to attain a standard of primary palliative care so that all health care providers have basic knowledge of palliative nursing to improve the care of patients and families.

2. All nurses will have basic skills in recognizing and managing symptoms, including pain, dyspnea, nausea, constipation, and others.

3. Nurses will be comfortable having discussions about death, and will collaborate with the care teams to ensure that patients and families have current and accurate information about the possibility or probability of a patient’s impending death.

4. Encourage patient and family participation in health care decision-making, including the use of advance directives in which both patient preferences and surrogates are identified.

Education

1. Those who practice in secondary or tertiary palliative care will have specialist education and certification.

2. Institutions and schools of nursing will integrate precepts of primary palliative care into curricula.

3. Basic and specialist End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) resources will be available.

4. Advocate for additional education in academic programs and work settings related to palliative care, including symptom management, supported decision-making, and end-of-life care, focusing on patients and families.

Research

1. Increase the integration of evidence-based care across the dimensions of end-of-life care.

2. Develop best practices for quality care across the dimensions of end-of-life care, including the physical, psychological, spiritual, and interpersonal.

3. Support the use of evidence-based and ethical care, and support decision-making for care at the end of life.

4. Develop best practices to measure the quality and effectiveness of the counseling and interdisciplinary care patients and families receive regarding end-of-life decision-making and treatments.

5. Support research that examines the relationship of patient and family satisfaction and their utilization of health care resources in end-of-life care choices.

Administration

1. Promote work environments in which the standards for excellent care extend through the patient’s death and into post-death care for families.

2. Encourage facilities and institutions to support the clinical competence and professional development that will help nurses provide excellent, dignified, and compassionate end-of-life care.

3. Work toward a standard of palliative care available to patients and families from the time of diagnosis of a serious illness or an injury.

4. Support the development and integration of palliative care services for all in- and outpatients and their families.

Needs of Military Veterans and Dependents

Our nation’s assistance in helping military veterans and their families is lacking.  Two needs that need the most focus are healthcare needs, specifically mental health, and transitional support.  Many veterans end up homeless or lack health insurance once they enter the civilian world (Deyton, Hess, & Jackonis, 2008).  According to Deyton et al. (2008) two million veterans and 3.8 million of their dependents lack private health insurance.  Most hardworking veterans earn too much to qualify for Medicaid programs but make too little to afford insurance (Deyton et al., 2008).  As a Naval veteran myself, I experienced the intimidating act of leaving the military and starting a new life as a civilian in 2011.  During my exit from the military, I received an exit medical exam.  This exam included the physician doing a head to toe assessment and reviewing my medical record.  No focus was evident regarding my mental health.  I was told by the physician, “You are a healthy childbearing woman and have no need for assistance upon discharge.”  From there, I was on my own to transition into civilian care.  I am one of the fortunate ones who could find resources.  Many are not so lucky.

Another need for veterans is transitional support.  Deyton et al. (2008) identify the lack of this support as another reason for homelessness and lack of health insurance access for veterans.  Before I discharged from the military, my superiors encouraged me to attend a Transition Assistance Program (TAP) class.  While participating in this class with about 50 others, I noticed only three other officers.  The rest were enlisted. In the military, officers have at least a bachelor’s degree.  The enlisted may also have some college background, but most are high school educated and trained on the job.  The three officers and I left the class with a stack of papers and extreme confusion.  While discussing our fears, we rationalized how fortunate we were that our education gave us opportunities on our exit.  Many others in the class were realizing challenges of employment as they described jobs in which they applied and were turned down.  Great fear was evident among the group.

Advocating Efforts

The development of policy is necessary to getting veterans healthcare access and supporting their transitional process.  Deyton et al. (2008) point out resources available are fragmented, and integration is essential.  Policy at the Agency Secretary level requiring coordination of these resources can make this integration possible (Deyton et al., 2008).  As a Navy veteran nurse, I’m responsible for advocating for policy to make the transition smooth for military veterans and their families.

Advocating skills necessary for a transitioning military veteran policy include grassroots lobbying.  Nurses should focus on developing relationships with their local legislatures and educate those legislatures on nursing interests (Milstead, 2013).  Milstead (2013) identifies nurse constituents as valuable resources in grassroots efforts and suggests nurses join specialty nurse organizations to develop the skills necessary.  Nurses who anticipate lobbying for policy should educate themselves on the lawmaking process and ethics laws to be most effective in their efforts (Milstead, 2013).  Development in advocacy skills to participate in grassroots efforts are necessary to support policy in helping military veterans and their families.

Nurses are responsible for advocating for the health of the populations (Laureate Education, 2012).  In nurses’ daily lives, they develop relationships with clients and colleagues giving them the opportunity to show compassion and empower their clients and coworkers (Begley, 2010). With rapport built, nurses have the responsibility of spreading education about healthcare issues and holding their colleagues accountable (Begley, 2010).  Dr. Peter Beilenson explained that, in the eyes of legislatures, nurses are constituents who care for their patients without a business agenda (Laureate Education, 2012).  Nurses should realize their value and become active in advocacy efforts to help veterans and their families and other suffering populations.

United States veterans are a multifaceted population with a distinct culture that includes, but is not limited to, values, customs, ethos, selfless duty, codes of conduct, implicit patterns of communication, and obedience to command (Olenick, Flowers, & Diaz, 2015, para. 1). Veterans have experiences that no civilian could begin to fathom. Mental health and substance abuse disorders, post-traumatic stress (PTSD), suicide, pain management, homelessness, and traumatic brain injuries can be a common occurrence for veterans returning from war. The advancement of medical technology has allowed servicemen to survive injuries that can be linked with mental scarring, such as a limb amputation. Although, this can lead to certain health disparities making it difficult for the individual to settle back into ‘normal’ civilian life, not only putting stressors on them but also their families. According to Weber & Clark (2016), there are currently 22 million veterans that live in the United States but nearly 60% of veterans are not enrolled in the Veteran Administration (VA) Health Care System and are relying on other resources or not receiving the care they need at all. The two main health care needs of veterans are mental health needs and helping those veterans and their families understand their healthcare benefits and how they can better access those benefits.

Nurses today are often at the front lines of providing services to the veteran population. The most crucial way that nurses can advocate for this population and their family is to be highly trained and competent when it comes to the military culture and to help veterans understand how to navigate the VA system to increase their access to healthcare. According to Begley (2010), successfully advocating for clients requires compassion, courage, empowerment, and commitment. As a nurse, understanding this concept can help to “ensure high quality, veteran-specific patient care, and potentially decrease the health disparities within the veteran population,” (Weber & Clark, 2016, para. 3).

Nurses need to understand what specific requirements are necessary to ensure veterans are eligible for health benefits. Determining the veteran’s minimum lengths of service, type of discharge, environmental exposures, and psychosocial characteristics of the time period in which the individual served are important first steps. When determining mental health status of a serviceman it is vital to develop a good rapport with both the individual themselves as well as the family. The most important step for nurses when advocating for veterans is to educate themselves on the primary issues. Immersing one’s self in veteran and military specific organizations, pushing for faculty development opportunities that provide trainings on veteran issues, and attending seminars and courses specific to the military population are all examples of how to advocate for these servicemen and their families.

Is nursing a profession?

When debating whether or not nursing is considered a profession, is it important to define what is a profession. By definition, a profession involves having a clear framework of its own body of knowledge, which implies that the professional is able to use the knowledge gained through research and uses it in practice (George, 2011). In a real-life situation, when a person enters a hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound, the individual will be immediately treated by a variety of different staff members who are trained and capable of treating the injured patient. Registered Nurses (RN), are surely among many of the staff members who would be present on the scene to ensure that the patient doesn’t bleed by continuously assessing and monitoring the patient’s progress.

Nursing is indeed considered a profession for many reasons that are worth to discuss. First, nurses are trained in an accredited school where they receive the training from professors who have received the proper training to educate their students to learn the knowledge required to practice the profession of nursing (Eptein & Turner, 2015). Second, the profession of nursing has been guided by the American Nurses Association and by the Code of Ethics, which mandates nurses to adhere to their strict standards and if failure to do so, will result in having the nursing license revoked (Eptein & Turner, 2015). Nurses have the ethical duty to protect their patients from harm, to treat every individual equally and with respect despite their gender, cultural background, sexual orientation or criminal record. Lastly, a nurse has the ability to use his/her judgement when making clinical decisions and has the ability to use his/her critical thinking skills when treating patients (Eptein & Turner, 2015). If for instance, a nurse comes across a medication that may be contraindicated for a particular patient, a nurse can use his/her critical thinking skills to question the doctor’s order and may hold the medication until full clarification is obtained. As part of their profession, nurses are responsible to ensuring that their patients receive the highest level of care.
