Outlining an Introduction Speech

Objective

Prepare an introduction speech Outline. (Please read all directions thoroughly and email me if you are unclear.)

Assignment Overview

In this assignment, you will explore the process used to prepare a basic speech. You will select a potential speech topic and outline your topic selection.

Deliverables

A one-page (250-word) outlineSee suggested format shown below.

Step 1 Review the information involved in planning a speech.

The main steps involved in preparing any type of speech include the following and should always remember the Preacher’s Axiom that is this: First, you tell them what you are going to tell them, then you tell them, and then you tell them what you told them.  You do this by these steps:

  • Choose the Right Topic
  • Narrow Your Topic
  • Locate Supporting Material
  • Structure Your Speech
  • Prepare an Outline
  • Practice
  • Deliver Your Speech

Step 2 Prepare an introduction speech.

In a one-page (250-word) outline, you are not writing your speech, just the outline, consider the following as you prepare your speech:

  • Brainstorm what your fellow classmates might find interesting about you for this introduction speech. Consider family history, stories about your childhood, significant life events, or your accomplishments.
  • Narrow your ideas down to a specific topic, theme, or anecdote. List the specific topic or title for your speech.
  • When locating supporting materials for your introduction speech, think about any visual aids that may support your delivery.
  • Remember to think about how you will open and close your introduction speech. Include those notes in your outline.

Step 3 Save and submit your assignment.

When you have completed the assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place and submit a copy to your instructor using the dropbox.

Here is a general method of outlining your speech that I urge you to use:

                                          Outline Format

Hook – this is the opening statement to your speech. It should be a statement that arouses interest and makes your reader/audience want to read or hear more. You pique their interest and they want to know more!

Thesis Statement (TS) – this is the main focus of your speech and I suggest it always be explicit. You want to first tell the audience what you are going to tell them and this is done in the TS. Make it explicit by listing the three points of your speech, not just by stating something like this: There are three reasons why cars are necessary, but rather like this: The three reasons cars are necessary are they are used to get people from point A to point B, they are used in emergencies, and they are useful for family transportation. See the difference between explicit and implied? Making your TS explicit is the best way to inform your audience in beginning speeches.

Support – These are the words in at least three body paragraphs that follow your TS in order of what you have listed for the three points. Use one paragraph to write about each point. Please have at least five sentences per paragraph since that can help ensure that you have enough support for that point.

Conclusion – In the conclusion, you will want to restate your TS but not in the exact same words you used in the introduction paragraph. Just use slightly different wording to say the same thing without boring your readers/audience with the same words from the introduction. Then you will want to end your conclusion with the last statement that will leave the audience with a warm and fuzzy feeling that appeals somehow to the emotions. We suggest this technique because it is known that folks remember the first and last of speeches, most times, and you should always want to make your speech memorable, so end with a memorable statement.

Hardiness Theory

It is of no surprise that many nurses who start working in the profession feel a sense of stress and burnout after working a long fast-paced shift in the hospital. The responsibility of making sure that every patient is receiving the highest level of care can be quite overwhelming when also being responsible for responding to the answers of concerned family members, receiving medical orders from doctors, delegating tasks to the patient care assistant, managing the pain of a trauma or post op patients, and ensuring the safety of a confused patient. Although this profession can be very satisfying, given that it involves helping patients in their most vulnerable state, the level of stress that nurses have to endure can be quite alarming. It is for this reason that many theorists have come into play when seeking to find a way to help individuals cope with difficult situations in the workplace. Susan Kobasa’s non-nursing theory known as Hardiness Theory, has been incorporated into a nursing theory when seeking to help nurses deal with the stresses of the profession (Henderson, 2015).

The theory of hardiness states that individuals must possess all three hardy attitudes, commitment, control, and challenge, in order to withstand any difficult life or professional situation and must learn how to turn any negative experience into an opportunity for personal and professional growth (Henderson, 2015). Commitment, being the first component of the theory of hardiness states that an individual must be active in every situation that comes in the way. In other words, the individual must never ignore the problem, but must instead be a participant in problem solving (Henderson, 2015). Control, is when an individual believes that his/her actions can result in a positive or negative outcome. The person has a sense of power over the situation (Henderson, 2015). Lastly, challenge is when an individual accepts the difficulties that comes along and uses them as opportunities to become a stronger and wiser (Henderson, 2015).

The components of this theory have been incorporated into a nursing theory because it has been used to provide nurses with effective strategies to manage the ongoing stresses that they face in the workplace. The humanistic nursing theory also includes the concept of authentic commitment, which means the nurse is actively present both personally and professionally in the decisions that are made when caring for a patient (George, 2011). It is highly important to implement the components of the theory presented because it serves as a tool to help reduce the incidence of developing any physical or mental illness (Henderson, 2015).

When you do research you are looking for answers. The reason for this discussion is to write about what the strength of research study is. With most nursing research the patient is the main focus. Evidence-based practices (EBP) were constructed because nurses started asking questions about the standard methods of care that were originally introduced. Along with the EBP, scholars have written articles with studies that have provided others with data that has made an effect on a population. Literature has been published or shared regarding studies and their results.

From the information I gathered, the strength of a research study is the ability to documentation data that was collected upon completion of the study. With the literature that is gathered it is then available to other nurses and providers that may have questions. Research is done to solve problems and show proof with the evidence obtained (Polit & Beck, 2018). By using explanations of the methods being used to conduct the study, the people that are reading can get an in-depth understanding of what theory was used, the subjects in the study, the reason why the study was conducted, and the end results to determine if the study answered any questions that could improve the quality of care of the subjects.

Through research many ideas can be made. With any information collected through studies, that can help providers comes up with care plans to have the patient have better outcomes. The goals of research is to focus on getting the best outcomes and results possible. Research studies are read by peers and later published by nursing databases like CINAHL. That database can help nurses that may want to start a research study by providing articles written done be other nurse researchers. If nurses plan to get into research there are programs that can help you with the resources to gather your information and start documenting about findings to help the future nurses. They even provide a research mentor (Walton, Sankey, & Jensen, 2017).

Professional nursing is defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (Epstein & Turner, 2015, para. 2). This definition comes from the American Nurses Association (ANA). The ANA has been responsible for supporting nursing practice through developing and applying policies, establishing the standards and scope with which nurses can practice, and the implementation of the Code of Ethics for Nurses. Nurses have responsibilities to advocate for their patients regardless of their own beliefs and values. This can result in conflicting and ethical challenges for the nurse; such is the case in this scenario with the community health nurse, Lena.

In this scenario, it is imperative to observe what ethical responsibilities Lena has as a professional nurse, as defined by the ANA. Provision 3 of the Code of Ethics for Nurses states, “the nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient,” (Fowler, 2015, p. 42). Her responsibilities include ensuring patient autonomy which gives the patient the right to self-determination. Beneficence refers to the actions that promote the well-being of others and ties into non-malfeasance meaning to ‘do no harm.’ Lastly, Lena’s ethical responsibilities boil down to justice, which I feel plays the largest role in this scenario and it means to uphold and follow the laws in place that govern how a nurse practices.  Lena must decide in this situation if she is going to inform her sister of her boyfriend’s HIV status or maintain the integrity of the patient which is her ethical duty as a nurse. There are statutes in place in the state of Florida that would help Lena to uphold her ethical responsibilities but also her moral duties to her sister. Florida statute 384.24 (2) states that it is unlawful for an individual who knowingly has HIV and has been informed that the disease is transmissible and can be passed on to another individual through sexual intercourse unless the other person has been informed and consents to the interaction.

If I were in Lena’s place, I would first verify the patient’s identity and all pertaining results. Once I have all accurate information in hand, I would contact the patient (sister’s boyfriend) and have him come into the clinic where he would be informed of all results, treatment options, and the importance of informing all partners of HIV status. I would impress upon the patient the consequences of not abiding by the Florida law and how the patient can be required to pay fines of up to $5,000 and face up to five years of prison time (The Center for HIV Law & Policy, n.d.). I would reiterate the fact that I would abide by his rights to privacy and confidentiality but that it is unlawful not fully to disclose HIV/AIDS status to all sexual partners.
