Discussion 1: Stages and Concepts of Development Within Play | 2025 Custom Writing

Think about the last time you shopped for toys. Perhaps you were buying toys for your own children or children of friends or family. If you shopped online, one of the filters you probably used to find an appropriate toy was age range. While toy manufacturers designate specific age ranges due to the choking hazards associated with the item, they also take child development into account. They know that designing a 250-piece puzzle is neither appropriate nor useful for a 2-year-old who has limited sensory and motor skills. In this discussion, you will reflect on a favorite toy or game as a child and determine which stage of Piaget’s theory of cognitive development you were in when you played with it.To prepare for this DiscussionReview this week’s Learning Resources on Piaget’s cognitive development theory. Pay particular attention to the description of each state of cognitive development.Consider a favorite toy or game you played with during childhood or adolescence.Using Piaget’s theory, identify the stage of development you were in when you played with this toy or game. How did the skills evident in that stage affect how you played with your toy or game?By Day 3Post a response to the following:Describe your favorite toy or game as a child. Indicate at which cognitive stage of development you were when you played with this toy and explain how your play reflected that stage of cognitive development. Provide scholarly citations and references to support your post.Note: Support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and any additional sources you identify using both in-text citations and references. It is strongly recommended that you include proper APA format and citations.By Day 5Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by identifying a key concept (e.g., scheme, assimilation, accommodation, object permanence) that is present in the play being described and explaining how that concept is exemplified.Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of your colleagues’ comments.

Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences. | 2025 Custom Writing

The accuracy of the results of research data is partially dependant on the sample that was used in the research study. How large the sample, its specific characteristics, and how it was selected, all play a significant role in how “good” the research results will be. Without appropriate sample size, characteristics, and selection, the results will be less than optimal. To this point, forensic psychology professionals often use existing databases from which to draw the data for their research; that is, they obtain their sample from these data bases. The problem with doing this is that the researcher does not have input into the sample represented in the data, such as how and from whom it was collected. To prepare for this assignment:Review Chapter 6 in your course text, Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences. Pay particular attention to when and where surveys are used in forensic research and the importance of representative sampling.Review the selected pages of Appendix B in your course text, Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences. Pay close attention to the role of sample size in applying results to the general population.Using the Walden Library, select a forensic psychology research article that interests you. As you review it, focus on the section(s) discussing methods and results.Consider how the sample size, sample characteristics, and means of sample selection influenced the results of the study. The assignment (1–3 pages):Briefly summarize the forensic psychology research article you selected, including the sections on methods and results, paying particular attention to sample size, characteristics, and means of selection.Explain how the sample size, sample characteristics, and sample selection influenced the results of the study and why.

Briefly describe the article you found on memory. Explain how the article informs our understanding of cognition and cognitive neuroscience. Be specific. | 2025 Custom Writing

Memory, Cognition, and Cognitive NeuroscienceDuring the late 1960s and early 1970s, cognitive psychology researchers conducted studies that offered new information about how memory is stored and processed. Findings suggested that memory is first encoded based on sensory data from the environment (sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell), moved to short-term memory, where it can be easily retrieved, and, when rehearsed (i.e., repeated thinking about the memory), moved to long-term memory, where it is stored and can be retrieved at a later date (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968; Craik & Lockhart, 1972).The basic structural information about memory that arose from these early studies, along with the emergence of brain imaging technology, has led to major advancements in our understanding of cognition and cognitive neuroscience. For example, there is a body of literature on the association between PTSD and memory dysfunction. Traumatic memories are thought to be encoded differently than other memories, which helps explain symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety. In addition, experiencing a traumatic event and then consistently reliving it through flashbacks and nightmares can damage the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for memory encoding, leading to deficits in short-term memory (Hays, VanElzakker, & Shin, 2012; MacIntosh & Whiffen, 2005). Fortunately, exciting new research on neuroplasticity suggests that the brain is malleable and that it is possible to reverse the damage to certain parts of the brain (Kays, Hurley, & Taber, 2012).In this discussion, you will examine other studies on memory and consider how the findings contribute to our understanding of cognition and cognitive neuroscience.Atkinson, R.
