Stress and Conflict Management

Conflict may occur in any work environment, whether it is in the clinical setting, another department, or another organization. It is important to understand how conflict arises and how conflict is managed through effective communication.

The behavior of a leader has a direct impact on the motivation of his or her team. It is crucial for a leader to understand how his or her behavior and conflict-handling ability impact the care of patients.Here is a scenario of a leader who is willing to handle conflicts in his or her workplace.

You are promoted to a management position in a small organization. There are four full-time members and three part-time members. You have a department manager currently overseeing the operations. You are excited to begin with your new assignment and have completed orientation. You heard some rumblings from the staff development team, “You have your work cut out for you in this department!” It does not sound promising, yet you are filled with energy, a positive 

attitude but a bit concerned as you do not want to appear bossy. You lack a bit of confidence since they are seasoned team members and you are new to the organization. 

Once you begin your first day, you decide to meet with everyone as a group and individually over the next few days. What you are uncovering is disturbing and you quickly realize that the team members have lots of conflicts within the department. In a nutshell, this is what you have discovered:



The department manager thinks she is in charge since clients, customers, or patients have specialized needs. She is stern faced and does not seem to smile, yet she does not admit it is her or her department’s fault if there is an error. She seems to enjoy the increasing conflict among the unit as it takes any “pressure” off her and she can continue to “tell people what to do.”



Two full -time administrative staff members do not like each other and refuse to work together. One feels the other cooks “strange food” and cannot understand her when she speaks, and she is too quiet. The other staff member feels the first one is too outspoken and not gracious and hurries through her assignments. They share a small office and their work is critical to the success of the organization as they oversee all billing, accounts payable and receivable, and schedule the large projects and services to other organizations. The rest of the staff members avoid going to this office as the tension is clearly increased in this room.



The part-time staff feel they are not being offered any extra shifts and sometimes they are asked not to come to work if the day is slow. They feel they are not valued and are demotivated by less pay. This is a critical time for them due to the economy crisis. When they are at work, they often bring their home problems with them and seem stressed when they have to work with the other team members.

In this assignment, you will be completing a health assessment on an older adult. To complete this assignment, do the following:

1. Perform a health history on an older adult. Students who do not work in an acute setting may “practice” these skills with a patient, community member, neighbor, friend, colleague, or loved one. (If an older individual is not available, you may choose a younger individual).
2. Complete a physical examination of the client using the “Health History and Examination” assignment resource. Use the “Functional Health Pattern Assessment” resource as a guideline to assist you in completing the template.
3. Document findings of complete physical examination in Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation (SBAR) format. Refer to the sample SBAR Template located on the National Nurse Leadership Council website at https://www.ihs.gov/nnlc/includes/themes/newihstheme/display_objects/documents/resources/SBARTEMPLATE.pdf as a guide.
4. Document the findings of the physical examination in the assessment worksheet.
5. Using the “Health History and Examination” assignment resource, provide the physical examination findings summary with planned interventions for the client. Include any community services in the interventions.

Read each article carefully. Re-read your chosen set and ask, “How are these articles similar?” “What do they have in common?” “How are they different?” “How are they not alike?”  Make some written notes about each article in your chosen set.  Compose a basic outline for your paper, including paragraphs for  Introduction (ending in a thesis statement, one sentence that lays out what your paper will do), Background, Multiple body paragraphs containing the bulk of your information, Conclusion.

In writing your paper, follow these guidelines. 1) Begin your paper by introducing the problem being investigated. 2) Give a detailed description of the study (why it was done, who conducted it, who the subjects were, what the results showed, and what the authors concluded from the results). 3) After describing the article, you must use critical thinking to analyze it. Critical thinking about epidemiological studies involves determining whether the evidence gathered and described by the authors is appropriate to answer the questions they are trying to answer and whether this evidence supports the conclusions eventually drawn by the authors. This is where you compare and contrast one study to the other study of the set you have chosen. 4) The last portion of the paper should state your conclusions regarding your analysis.

You must include  at least   two  references showing where you derived your information and those references should be cited with-in the text of your paper.  You will also probably want to cite some information from your textbook.

After putting your paper together, you will want to condense/summarize the most important information into an abstract, which is a brief/short summary of the paper.

Your completed paper should be 5-7 double-spaced pages in length (including title page, abstract, and reference page) and  conform to the APA standard format.

Make a Change

For this final assignment, imagine that you had the ability to change anything you wanted with regards to the current healthcare system in the United States. In a one to two page paper, outline the changes you would make to increase access, increase quality, and decrease cost. Be sure to utilize references and data to support your position.
