In the facility that I work I see first hand the critical decisions that our nurse leaders make everyday to maintain a cohesive work environment . Some decisions are based on policy and procedure but others are based on many years of knowledge and experience.It is important to note that a range of policies and initiatives means that the nursing profession has influence on all aspects of the healthcare delivery (Kelly & Tazbir, 2014). One occasion where I saw nursing leadership being a instrumental part of patient care is when a suspect in a gang related shooting was brought into the hospital for medical treatment. Once the patient was stabilized in the emergency room he was brought to the med/surg unit for further evaluation and treatment. Multiple nurses on the med/surg unit refused to care for the patient. Before the situation got of of hand the nurse leader intervened and called a staff huddle to address the situation. During the huddle she explained that as nurses we have a responsibility to care for the sick and injured regardless of the circumstance. Through this experience, I was able to see nursing leadership is essential and emotional intelligence is effective trait in a nurse with a role in leadership. Our nurse leader used transformational leadership in this situation to work with the team on the unit in order to provide the best care for the patient.

1. School Nurse Experience and Reflective Essay

The School Nurse Experience provides the student with exposure to the school-age child and their interaction with a health care professional in the school setting. The student needs to observe the interaction of the nurse with the acute and chronic medical conditions as well as the promotion of health.

Students will be assigned to an elementary, middle, or high school in the Toms River School District to shadow the school nurse(s) for one full day as a clinical experience. The student may assist the school nurse by performing basic assessments (temperatures, heights/weights) as directed by the school nurse. The student cannot administer any medications or provide any treatments. 

The student will arrive 15 minutes earlier than the start of school to which they are assigned in professional attire, the OCC Lab coat and OCC name tag. Upon arrival, report and sign in at the Main Office. The student will stay for the entire day the nurse has students in the school. Note: you must notify the Professor if there are any relatives, friends or friends’ children in that school. 

Objectives for the School Nurse Experience:

1. Observe the nurse’s assessment of pediatric patients with select      health alterations. 
2. Integrate appropriate therapeutic communication techniques with      pediatric patients.
3. Observe the nurse as care is prioritized throughout the day
4. Identify appropriate growth and development milestones in the      pediatric population. 
5. Observe the school nurse’s interactions with children and other      professionals.

I have worked as RN in a level one trauma center for about 3 years now, working in the Burn ICU has been one of the biggest challenges I have faced in my nursing career. Some people may assume that the Burn ICU does not care for very sick patients like other units, but in actuality it is so specialized that a well-trained CTICU nurse would struggle. One of the biggest learning experiences I faced since being in the Burn ICU was during a horrible burn trauma activation involving 6 male individuals that were burned while working at the local power plant. It was about 5:45pm, when the charge nurse pager went off with a burn trauma alert. Yes, I happened to have taken over charge nurse at 3:00pm, while managing one patient in the ICU. Back to back the pager went off 6 times, with different burn trauma alerts. Before I knew it, my charge phone was ringing and it was the hospital supervisor informing me that we were going to be transferring out all the patients in our 6 bed ICU to other ICU’s to make room for the 6 burn victims arriving. Suddenly, before we knew it we moved all of our patients and the new burn victims came rolling in. All of the burns were ranging from 60-90% total body surface. I individually managed one of the patients while navigating the unit and med-surg burn floor. It was about 6:30pm, I called in 4 nurses to come in early to help assist with debriding these patients. By the end of the shift at 7pm, all 6 patients were being lined and started on CRRT, along with arterial lines placed and central lines. I somehow had to manage my nursing skills appropriately and take charge of the entire unit. At 7:15p, I lost pulses on my all 4 extremities and my patients bladder pressure was sky rocketing. After about 10 minutes, the plastic surgery team was at the bedside performing fasciotomies and trauma surgery was opening up my patients’ abdomen at beside to help relieve bladder pressure.

During this one individual experience I learned so much about myself. My time management, assessment skills, nursing knowledge and team leadership skills were all put to a test. Thinking back I thought I would have fallen apart, I had only been a RN for a little under two years at this time and I was still questioning all of my skills and abilities. Walking out of the hospital that night I could have not been any more exhausted and discouraged, wondering if I had messed something up or forgotten something. I tried my best to think to myself “you are leaving and you kept this 90% full thickness burn victim alive, that is what you are here for.”
