Assignment: Final Project: Stage III—The Institutional Review Board Process

The medical practice rule of “first do no harm” can be applied to health science research as “first do no harm to your study participants.” Harm in this instance means not only physical harm but also the emotional harm that might be caused by unethical research practices.

Despite such lofty ideals, until the 1960s and 1970s, many studies centered on the use of uninformed human subjects. According to Moon and Khin-Maung-Gyi, even after the Nuremberg trials exposed the Nazi war crimes and the Nuremberg Code provided a clear statement of standards for research on human subjects, unethical research programs continued to be designed and conducted (Moon & Khin-Maung-Gyi, 2009). Well-known examples of egregious unethical research in the United States include the Willowbrook study of hepatitis transmission in a hospital for “mentally impaired” children and the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital case in which chronically ill patients were injected with cancer cells to monitor rejection. In each of these studies, investigators were confident that the ends of research justified the means (Walkup & Bock, 2009).

These and other studies led to the creation of the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research and its seminal Belmont Report, which cited three foundational principles of ethical research on humans: respect for persons, beneficence, and justice (Moon & Khin-Maung-Gyi, 2009). These studies also led to the development of Institutional Review Boards, or IRBs, which were designed to provide oversight on all government-funded research studies. IRBs are in wide use today.

To prepare

Review the Keiser Institutional Review (IRB) process and requirements described in the Keiser Center for Research Quality. Consider how these IRB processes and requirements for ethical practice might apply to your Final Project, which is a proposal for an intervention that addresses a health problem identified in a particular community and that is of interest to you. (H.I.V/AIDS In lower income communities)

Submit a 2-page paper in which you do the following: (ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS)

· Explain ethical issues related to your Final Project research program intervention.

· Explain whether these issues are actual or potential and provide a rationale for your answer.

· Explain the level of privacy that would be required according to an IRB for participants in your Final Project research program intervention, and explain why.

This assignment is the first part of a three part paper assignment. Students will select a low-income country of interest The purpose of this assignment is for the student to introduce the country of interest. The student will describe the selected country and include: historical influences, health influences, health systems, economy and policies that affect the health of the country’s population. Relevant international policies can be discussed if applicable. The abstract should be 1-2 pages outlining the purpose of the paper.

Related Outcomes

Outcome 1: Discuss the importance of historical events and initiatives and their influence on global health issues in order to understand current and anticipate future health care trends based on changing demographic trends, emerging technologies, and disease burdens.

Conduct a health assessment of a particular population and create an audience-appropriate PowerPoint presentation in which you distribute the results of the assessment.

Part 1

Conduct a health assessment of a population of your choice.

• To accomplish this, describe the key factors that make up an assessment at each of the following levels: 
  • Community.
  • Group.
  • Individual.
• Explain the process for completing a comprehensive health assessment.
• Complete the assessment.
• Write a completed a 3–5 page summary of the results of the health assessment and an explanation of the process you used to conduct it. Be sure to include a brief description of the population you selected.

Part II

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation in which you present your health assessment to your colleagues in one of the following venues that most closely resembles something you might do in your current clinical setting:

1. Multidisciplinary team rounds.
2. An in-service for team members.
3. A meeting of key stakeholders to conduct a multidisciplinary assessment of your selected client population.

To accomplish this, think about the characteristics of the audience you will be presenting your information to:

• What type of information would be appropriate for this group?
• What style of presentation might get the information across in the best way?
• In the notes section of the first slide, describe the characteristics of your target audience.
• In the notes section of each subsequent slide, explain why you are including the information presented on the slide, and support your information with valid scholarly resources.
• The final slide should be the reference list for the resources you used in your presentation.
• There is no required number of slides for the PowerPoint presentation, but you should be sure you address the health assessment as completely as possible for your target audience.

Clinical Case Presentations 

Students must post one interesting case that he/she has seen in the clinical setting via Discussion Board in the online part of this course. The case should be an unusual diagnosis, or a complex case that required in-depth evaluation on the student’s part. The case should be posted in the SOAP format, with references for the patient diagnosis, differential diagnoses (there should be at least 3), and the treatment plan. Notes will be graded as “pass/fail”. In order to receive grade points for SOAP notes, the notes must be approved by the deadlines specified on the course assignments page. The student will lose the opportunity for points on any SOAP notes not approved by the specified deadlines.
