Healthypeople.gov is a website that provides a multitide of health related information ranging from providing access to health care, genomics, respiratory diseases and substance abuse.  It is a very user friendly website that is very helpful to the public as it provides easy to understand information about hundreds of topics and their advise, interventions and resources are based on evidence based practice.  Every decade, the healthy people initiative develops a new set of objectives to improve the health of all Americans.  Healthy People 2020 includes over 1,200 objectives to monitor and improve the health of all Americans over the decade. The objectives are organized into 42 topic areas, each representing an important public health area. To determine the success of Healthy People, it is important to track and measure progress for the objectives over the decade (Healthy People, 2018).  The three types main types of Healthy People objectives are measurable objectives, developmental objectives and informational objectives.  These objectives ensure that there is a national baseline value and that the objectives are measurable and targets have been established.  

Planning is now underway for Healthy People 2030.  The planning is being formed based on public comment period held from June 27 to September 29, 2017, where members of the public were invited to share their comments on the draft framework.  These goals could potentially have a major impact on the health of the nation.  This website is a fantastic resource for the public and can help give them basic information and point them in the right direction in regards to healthcare interventions and health education.  

This is the first time I have used this website and it is very informational and user friendly.  I can incorporate this resource into my daily practice by educating my patients on this information and invite them to view the website to further educate themselves on their condition.  Also, there are many topics that I can print for patients upon discharge in regards to their medical conditions.

• Have there been challenges you have faced? If so, what strategies did you employ to overcome these challenges?’

I believe it is impossible to have any type of job that you would not have to find a way to overcome certain challenges. I am a nurse on a med surg floor right now and I would day the biggest challenge I have faced so far would be staffing and nurse to patient ratio. “Nurses are the providers with the greatest presence during health care delivery, and they provide the most holistic approach to patients” (Diana J. Mason, 2016, p. 161). With that being said, on the med surg floor I work on, we sometimes have 7 patients each and it makes it close to impossible for me to feel like I am being the nurse that I know I can be and provide the care that each and every patient deserves. Being a nightshift nurse I feel like they believe we are not busy or we have a lot of down time to be able to handle these 7 patients but I feel as I do not get to spend quality time and provide the care patients need having 7 patients. Prioritizing each patients needs is the only way I’ve been able to make it through nights that we have had 7 patients each. I make sure to show up at work at least 30 minutes early to look at my assignments and see what exactly it is that I am going to be working with. 

• How do you envision your career moving forward in advocating for your patients? Your community? Yourself?

I feel like a large part of being a nurse is being a patients advocate. You have to listen to each patients wants and needs and be there to help lead them in the right direction of the care they need. It is important to listen to a patients needs and get whatever question they have regarding their health answered. Ive been a nurse for a little over a year now and I feel like I am becoming more and more of a patient advocate. I feel more comfortable and confident in the care I provide as well as educating patients and helping them form questions they may have for their doctors or other medical staff. I have recently signed on with a travel agency and I plan to start taking a few assignments here and there in hopes to help build skill and confidence in my nursing profession and be able to be more of an advocate for my community as well as myself.

Health care reengineering is a discipline that helps organizations reorder priorities, provide more cost-effective care, and increase value to customers. Reengineering should be driven what is best for the organization and the needs of the organization. Reengineering is a critical “core competency” and “requisite skill”  for health care organizations if they are to succeed under managed care in the future. Managers and leaders play a vital role in the process of reengineering. The managers role is to ensure “that the mission of the organization, which focuses on providing excellent care for clients, is fulfilled through effective and efficient coordination of resources” (GCU, 2013). Managers display the skills for showing responsibility by guaranteeing that the staff is competent to provide the care of each individualized patient. Managers show their skills by holding staff accountable. Managers have been described as planners, problem solvers, delegators, and staffers (Huber, 2014). GCU, 2013, described the roles of management as planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling. Leaders are the mentors and inspirations of the organizations. The leaders make the goals and outcomes known for the organization. The leaders are critical to organizations as they ensure that the operations than run from day-to-day are ran smoothly without any bumps in the roads. Managers and leaders have distinct roles with their organization but they both must integrate their roles to provide effective leadership. The managers and leaders work together to develop the “power” needed to accomplish goals, mission, and reengineering within the hospital.

Nurse managers and leader’s role in reengineering health care is by being advocates for patients and staff, as well as making sure the hospital’s environment is calm and functioning smoothly. “Advocacy is a process used to facilitate growth in others. Common methods of advocacy are: 1) providing others with information that empowers them to make their own decisions, and 2) acting on behalf of others who do not have the ability or power to advocate for themselves” (Reengineering, 2011). It is important for the nurse managers and leaders to create a hospital facility environment where patients are respected, and are empowered by educating them on their health and condition to enable them to make decisions about their treatment and care. It is also important for managers/leaders to continually check on their staff’s patient care feedback and any concerns they may have. It is also important for them to listen to their staff and patient. “Leaders must listen to the sounds of change. Leaders must help people work through the grieving process and conflicts experienced during time of change. Because the pace of change in health care is so rapid, leaders must be prepared to deal with the chaos and uncertainty through calm communication” (Reengineering, 2011).
