Select an infectious disease and research the CDC website for information about the disease, its natural history, presenting symptoms, and outbreak characteristics. Identify an occurrence of the disease by searching the Internet for recent reports of this disease and compare that episode or occurrence with information from the CDC website.

Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is a rare infectious disease that affects the nervous system. The disease cause inflammation to spinal cord predominantly the gray matter, which cause the muscles and reflexes in the body to become weak. According to CDC, there are several probable causes of AFM such as, viruses like  poliovirus and non-polio enteroviruses, West Nile virus, and adenoviruses environmental toxins and genetic disorders.

The symptoms present with sudden onset of upper and lower extremities weakness, loss of muscle tone and reflexes. Some people will also experience facial drooping, ptosis, difficulty moving the eyes, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, pain in the extremities, and inability to urinate. The most severe affect is respiratory failure.

According to CDC, from August 2014 through September 2018 there’s been a total of 386 confirmed cases, mostly cases involve children. Currently for 2018 with presenting onset of symptoms for September to October 16,2018; there are 62 confirmed cases in 22 state in the U.S.The patients’ symptoms have been most similar to complications of infection with certain viruses, including poliovirus, non-polio enteroviruses, adenoviruses, and West Nile virus. The diagnostic test ran all AFM cases have tested negative for poliovirus. “The increase in AFM cases in 2014 coincided with a national outbreak of severe respiratory illness among people caused by enterovirus D68 (EV-D68). Among the people confirmed with AFM, CDC did not consistently detect EV-D68 in every patient (Acute Flaccid Myelitis, 2018).

1-Emotional self-awareness has a great impact on the effectiveness of leadership.  Knowing one’s own emotional state and mood is crucial in building a professional and productive relationship with one’s staff (Huber, 2014). Leaders who have the capability of being self- aware of their emotions are better able to recognize when their emotions are having a negative affect on people which then allows them to address it effectively (Goleman, 2017).

Such behaviors such as being confident, involved and leading by example as well as being humble and honest, and admitting to one’s own mistakes and taking responsibility for what we do not know and knowing when to ask for help, I feel are characteristics of a leader that not only encourage, but also motivate people in wanting to do their best. I feel that people respond to leaders that make them feel as an integral part of the team. Allowing people to provide feedback is one way of doing so, as it shows them that as a leader we care about their input, their ideas and/or suggestions in moving forward with a certain project.

2-Leadership is more than just being a point of authority and telling people what to do. Nurse leaders need to be even more developed with working with multiple titles within the health care team such as: Doctors, nurses, patient care assistants and so many other positions held within the hosptial. Poor leadership can be recognized easily and can have an impact on how an organization operates. According to Romanowska (2014) “Developing leadership competence is a serious responsibil- ity. Poor leadership is common and may cause severe human suffering, resulting in substantial costs for business and society. When organizations invest time and money in programs for improvement of their leaders’ ability to assume responsibility, they expect improvement in employees’ performance and health” (p.97). 

In order for a leader to be successful they need to possess certain skills with self awareness being one of them. Self awarenss by definition is one’s ability to recognize and conscious one’s own character, feelings, motives and desires. As a leader this is important because leaders often need to separate emotion to make sound decisions and judgments. A self aware leader is more likely to not act on impulses. Being more aware of one’s own emotions helps a leader to better understand the emotions and feelings of the perople around them as well. 

Having strong nursing leaders are an essential part of organizing safe patient care and a happy staff. Through experience I have found that you can encounter many different egos within the hospital. The most effective nursing leaders are the one’s who are able to admit when they are wrong and are open to other staff member’s input and advice. Havign self awareness helps the nurse leader to set good examples for other staff members by using safe practice and staff being more open to input from that leader.

3-One’s self awareness and behaviors’ have the potential influence us by the different things that can factor us like our culture, belief and our values. According to Edwards and Daniel “varies factors have a potential impact in the formulation of one’s self awareness and behaviors’ (2009) they also define values as “generals’ beliefs about the importance of normatively desirable behaviors’ and actions” (p.655). A few years ago as a unit manager my beliefs were no matter what the issues and problems were on the unit all staffs seems to work it out every morning we had a meeting about things that gone wrong and what can be done to get things better, I never had a problem getting staffs doing their job because, they knew that I am always there to help and what I didn’t like for myself I don’t believe on doing it to others. Some nurses always complained that the staffs do not respect them and never do what is asked I can truly say this I never had a problem with getting staff to do their job, because they know that what ever is asked of them I, as the manager can and will do. As manager and or leaders we lead my examples to me that means whatever is asked of staffs to do managers we have no issues doing it ourselves. Sometimes staff will say to me what makes you tick meaning getting upset I always laugh and say you will never know, having and knowing our self-awareness will help to keep emotions and behaviors under control no matter how upsets and angry we get our emotions and what we feel should never be displayed before other staffs, patients and or family members. If staffs need to be at work early managers needs to be their early too. We need to be honest with our self don’t say one thing a another. My weakness is I am unable to come to work and job in and work I have to be at work a few minutes early at least 30 mins where I can calm by mind, do my walking rounds, get my thoughts together and be prepared before I start some nurses have problems with that because the seems to come to work late and that throws my whole day off but that is something that I need to work on and currently doing. While I was doing the unit manager I got written up the reason for that was I was told by the DON that I was spoon feeding the nurses too much because I do thier job for them I am not the one that seems to delegate and then return to make sure its done, at times I will help the nurses by helping them to do and get the job done and I was told that it’s the nurses job and I am there to make sure it’s done not to do it for them. The impact of improving value congruence itself may not be as successful a strategy as focusing on the resultants of value. (Edwards& Daniels,2009)

4-I so agree with you, its not what you but its how you do it, i always say it never the big things that are done but its always the smallest things that is done will make a difference. Treating employees with kindness will go along way, dont tell the staff that how good their doing but show them sometimes its good to let people knows that they are appreciated and mean it and you wil get more out of them. A few weeks ago we were short staff by 4 CNA i called in a few of them they came in and work we had no grievences on monday i went into my own funds with two other nurses and give each staff members gift cards and then brought them in lunch i do this to let them know that i appreciate all they did those two days for us when they didnt have after all it was their weekend but they gave it up to come in and work, when the administrator heard she call me into the office and told me that i didnt have to do that i looked at her and said i know but the reason i do it is because i wanted to number one and i appreciate them and we need each other,  this is not a one mans band and sometimes its nice to show and tell staffs how we truly feels about them expecially if there help is needed and they come to the  rescue and their hard work she said oh they didnt do it for free they getting paid she said that i must not kid my self they came in because they needed the overtime, i looked at her and walked out, there was nothing more to be said.

  

5-As a nurse leader, I would develop an outreach program that would benefit our much diverse population in our community. First I would create a vision of a needy program such as having a monthly health fair in the local adult community center.  Leaders and managers overlap in their job functions and this is where a leader can collaborate with the managers to carry out his or her vision.  With leader’s motivation and inspiration, and manager’s task–oriented skills and solid actions, the outreach program can become a reality.  Nurse Managers and Leaders must understand their roles and good communication is crucial to carry out plans either by verbal, non-verbal or written communications (Lecture 2, 2018).

  1. A      vision is your personal view that you create for the benefit of your      community
  2. Look      at your community makeup, for example, buildings, public spaces, jobs,      kind and types of people (cultural diverse)
  3. Think      of some of their needs and develop a vision
  4. Communicate      your vision and get feedback, talk to people, go to different community centers,      adult clinics and discuss your vision through seminars, posters, flyers      and get a feel of how strong your vision is
  5. Develop      a plan and strategies for your shared vision

Strategic planning is an organizational management process that allows you to involve your staff and monitor the results regularly.  We can be proactive and keep up and stay ahead with the changing trends in the workplace.  It can offer a great foundation with realistic objectives and goals.  It guides managers’ discussion and decision making in resources and budget for the vision.  It can increase profits, provide marketing success and have a strong foundation (Ong, 2015). 

Now as a leader, you have to help people make this vision their own, so that with a sense of ownership everyone can work together in a committed group.  You should do this by communicating effectively and be courageous to all members in order to have the same basic goal of the vision.  The outreach program will be presented to the stakeholders, such as staff and board members during meetings and get feedback. Then step is to go out to the community center and execute the vision and finally get evaluation to see if changes need to be made.

6-I think that in order to implement any kind of new program, I feel that it is necessary to do the research first. It is also necessary to have good communication with an effective way to present the information that has been gathered. The new program will need to share the same values of the stakeholders in your organization, so it will be important to ensure the match before the presentation. Huber explains that the following steps are useful in developing the framework of a new plan.

•Developing a strategic mission or vision

•Setting objectives

•Developing strategies to achieve the objectives

•Implementing the strategies

•Evaluating the results (Huber, 2014, p. 331).

After the information is gathered, I would develop a PowerPoint presentation that would allow for the information to be shown to the stakeholders. This would include a summarized list of the information, and a detailed packed would be given for reading on their own time. I would want to keep the information short, as I would not want to overwhelm or bore them with the topic. I would include a time for discussion and questions to be asked and answered. Good verbal abilities and eye contact would be necessary for a successful presentation.  In order for this plan to become a reality, the stakeholders of the organization would have to find common ground with the presenting nurse. When they are on the same page, there is the possibility to provide quite the impact on the members in need in the community.

Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV is a virus that is transmitted through body fluids through sexual contact, needle sharing, as well as mother to baby. The virus attacks the immune system and causes the CD4 cells, what helps fight infections, to be low (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). There have been great strides made, since the first diagnoses in the early 1980s, when it comes to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (National Prevention Information Network, 2017). The ELISA or the rapid HIV test is used to test someone for HIV. If the individual is positive, a confirmation test called the Western Blot test is done to confirm these results (Lawrence & Ashely, 2018). It is mandatory that all practitioners and laboratories report positive results to the local or state health department. The state department will then send this information to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (Hartog, 2013). When treated with the correct antiretroviral therapy (ART) patients can remain in the clinical latency phase for decades and live a normal life and are less likely to infect others at this stage (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). While there has been a national decrease of new HIV cases, Florida is seeing an increase in new HIV cases (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2017). For family nurse practitioners mainly seeing patients in the clinic setting, it is important that prevention is key and, education and screening needs to be the focus to help reduce the new cases of HIV. While it is not possible to prevent all cases of new HIV, we must make sure that individuals that are infected with HIV have the resources to receive their ART regimen and take it correctly.
