The literature review is key to any research study or article development. It is important to review the literature within your own discipline, but also other disciplines which may confront similar issues or have related concerns. For example, practice issues in other health related fields often correspond to those confronted in nursing. Nursing education concerns may also be found in academic research within other disciplines outside of the health care field.

Essay #1:  Character Analysis of Phoenix Jackson in “A Worn Path”

Length:  600 – 800 words

Format:   MLA

Assignment (adapted from Hammons and Fatherree, page 299, FOS):  Write a character analysis of Phoenix Jackson.  Your analysis must make a claim about Phoenix Jackson, and you should back up that claim with evidence from the story.  As you integrate your evidence into your paper, you must interpret the evidence so that your reader knows what he or she is supposed to get out of that evidence.  Your interpretation must always relate back to your claim.  As Hammons and Fatherree implore, “You must go beyond the obvious in your analysis” (298).  All of the reading and work that you have done this week has been to prepare you for this essay.  You should have plenty to work with as you begin.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Avoid plot summary!  Your paper is an analysis, not a plot summary. 

MLA FORMAT FOR THIS LITERARY CRITIQUE:   

You do not need a works cited page for this essay; however, you must use proper in-text citation (also called parenthetical citation/documentation) for all paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting of the short story. 

 

Imagine you have been selected to conduct a recruiting and staffing training program for a group of new human resource management (HRM) employees at a health care company. You need to prepare a proposal for the organization outlining your strategy for the training program.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

1. Create an overview of the process and steps involved in human resource planning, recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and hiring of employees.
2. Develop a comprehensive strategy for training new employees. Focusing on the role of the new employees within the organization.
3. Propose two to four (2-4) training strategies aimed at motivating the employees to learn key aspects about their new jobs.
4. Determine key issues that human resource management employees would be likely to encounter in the health care field. Prepare a plan that will enable the new employees to address each issue which includes instructional strategies, resources that will be utilized, and evaluation criteria for determining success.
5. Design at least three (3) visual components that enhance the program you have outlined, such as charts or diagrams.
6. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not quality as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

Write an introduction that defines and describes the topic. Address what purpose the topic serves and how it impacts the delivery of healthcare in general and nursing care in particular.

Search for scholarly sources and relevant websites. Include a minimum of two scholarly sources. The course textbook does not qualify as a scholarly source. Cite all sources in the body of the paper and include them in the References list following proper APA formatting.

Provide one example of this topic. Describe the main features or aspects of the example with support from your sources. If you haven’t used this before, think of how this could benefit clinical practice.

Describe an experience where the topic impacted you personally, either when you were receiving healthcare or when you were providing nursing care. Relate one positive aspect or one negative aspect of this experience and how it could have been improved. If you haven’t used this before, think of how this could benefit clinical practice.

Write a conclusion that summarizes the topic, the purpose, and how your newfound insight will influence your nursing care.

The length of the paper should be a maximum of 4-5 pages, excluding the title page and the reference page. There should only be one small quote maximum in the paper. Citations should primarily include summary and restatement.
