                                      Using the Walden Library   

            During research for another assignment, I came across an interesting article about suicide and substance abuse in the Walden Library. I was looking for how substance abuse related to suicide if at all and was delighted with the search results. In this post, I will discuss a summary of the study, its strengths and limitations, and my search experience.              

            The study was conducted in Denmark using their national registration systems. The registers can track who has had psychiatric treatment for a mental health disorder as well as co-occurring disorders such as substance abuse. The purpose of the study was to determine links between substance use and completed suicides and attempted suicides. The study used the registry data to conclude that substance use increased the risk of completing suicide by triple (Ostergaard, Nordentoft, & Hjorthoj, 2017). Although this is valuable information, it has limitations. For example, the study outcome may apply in Denmark, but it is not representative of mental health populations outside of Denmark. A strength present in the study was the use of national registers that allowed the study conductors to follow individuals over an extended period versus a randomized controlled trial where time to study is often short.

            The use of the Walden Library has become more comfortable over time. Finding the study was relatively easy as I mentioned above that I was looking for how substance abuse and suicide relate. According to Walden University (n.d.), splitting your topic into keywords and avoiding phrases are vital strategies for searching for articles. I typed “substance abuse” and “suicide” into the search bar, and this study was number two on the list under the CINAHL Plus database. Using keywords is the best-kept secret to successful searching. Also, I like to take advantage of citations that are included in the library resources. Walden University (n.d.) suggests checking the citations from the library before using in your works as they do have errors. I have found errors when using the built-in citations, so this is excellent advice.

                         Blood Glucose Management By Nurses Article

Blood glucose management in the neuro-intensive care by neurologists and neurosurgeons is not as aggressive as physicians in the cardiac, surgical and medical unit. One example, this week I have a patient admitted for seizures and he is in three different types of seizures medications which makes him lethargic and unable to eat. There were no orders for glucose checks and I chased the neurology for almost two days to get an order for a glucose blood check. The truth I was checking the patient sugar for safety and preventing comatose from hypoglycemia. In my practice the article researching “Nurse-Directed Blood Glucose Management in the Medical Intensive Care Unit” (Gibbs H, Rowden AM, 2017). is very interesting to me because the management of blood glucose in the medical ICU is organized and if nurses manage it will improve time, planning and prevention of hypoglycemia. I noticed that’s Walden Library has good articles and journals good for patients and family education in blood sugar control. Diabetes problem is growing in our community because of obesity and genetics. There are several ways and material available in different languages to help decrease diabetes. The goal of the research of this article is to decrease risks of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. (Critical Care Nurse. 2017;37[3]:30-41). 

               Complementary Health Implementation by Nurses 

The second article I research on is about complementary care such as massages, bone stretching and more implemented by certified nurses. In the article, there is a statement about the increased demands of this care. It is interesting to me because we touch patients all day when caring for them and due to policies and ethical rules we cannot massage or scratch their back when needed. In my opinion, the patient’s dignity is loss immediately they walk in the clinic or Emergency room. This article is good for education with nursing students, nurses, and family.   In my current hospital, pet therapy music and art just initiated for patients. (Critical Care Nurse. 2017; 37[3]:60-65).
