Coyne and Messina Articles Analysis

As an example guideline, review the study components in the left-side column of the table below. Read the study by Messina et al., and build the data in the right-side column with the key components in that study.

Research Question:

Coyne: Do size and ownership type make a difference in the efficiency and cost results of hospitals in Washington state? (Highlight p.164, second column, starting 15 lines from bottom to seven lines from bottom.)

Messina:

How did the research question emerge from the review of literature in the article?

Coyne:

Built on an earlier study by Coyne on performance differences between multi-facility systems and independent hospitals using two cost measures. Cited studies that used a range of variables to measure differences in hospital performance, and noted that prior findings have been inconclusive in regard to hospital size, although economies of scale were found.

No

Used data that are commonly used to measure hospital efficiency and performance with high degrees of accuracy (reliable), and data that are historically used and make sense to other hospital users (valid).

Messina:

Describe analysis.

What statistics were used?

Coyne:

Two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)

Messina:

Did the researchers’ conclusions make sense, did they answer the research question, and did they appear to flow from the review of the literature?

Did they explore control of extraneous variables?

Coyne:

They concluded that size and ownership type make a difference in reported levels of efficiency. Not for profits seem to achieve higher performance levels, and medium and large not for profits operate more efficiently than industry average. The same results were found for cost levels, in that size and ownership type do make a difference, with medium sized hospitals reporting lower costs than large or small hospitals.

Yes, when they called for national studies that controlled for case mix, scope of services, and payer mix, all of which could have affected the results in this study in an unmeasured way.

Case Study: Descriptive Epidemiology – 2025

If you read the “Health” page (either paper or web-based) of any major news source (e.g., The New York TimesCNN),  reports of the occurrence of health outcomes are common headlines. For  example, you may see the following or similar headlines:

“Breast Cancer Increasing in Asian-American Women”
“Teenage Smoking at an All-Time Low”

Have you ever wondered where this information comes from and what it really means?

Governmental agencies and other organizations routinely  collect descriptive epidemiological statistics on many health outcomes.  For example, statistics on the occurrence of cancer in the United  States have been continuously collected since the early 1970s through  the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the  National Cancer Institute.

For this Case Study Assignment, you will analyze and  interpret descriptive epidemiologic statistics. To prepare for this  Assignment, review the material presented in the textbook.

A case study worksheet will be provided by your  instructor for this Assignment in the form of a Microsoft Word document.  Download the worksheet and type your answers directly into the document  to complete the Assignment. Be sure that your completed worksheet  contains your responses to all questions.

Prior to submitting your Descriptive Epidemiology Case Study, review the Module 2 Case Study Assignment Rubric.

Sampling

The temptation to form premature theories upon insufficient data is the bane of our profession.

—Sherlock Holmes (from The Valley of Fear, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)

Sherlock Holmes, the great fictional logician, may have made this reprimand in reference to the science of criminal investigation, but the underlying principle holds true for all branches of research. Now that you have identified a research problem and developed hypotheses, the next step is to identify your sample and begin gathering data that will answer your research questions. The process of sampling to gather data is a crucial step in the research process in that you must be sure that the instruments and sample population mesh well with the study’s goals and objectives so that they will produce valid and reliable results.

For this Discussion, you identify a target population and sample appropriate for addressing the research problem you formulated in the Week 2 Discussion. (see attached file).

To prepare:

  • Review      this week’s media presentation and consider Dr. Pothoff’s comments on      sampling.
  • Recall      the research problem, question, and hypothesis you developed in Week 2’s      Discussion. With this in mind, ask yourself: What population is most      relevant, and accessible, for exploring my research problem?
  • Consider      how you could reach this target population to gather data. What are some      challenges you might encounter?
  • Determine      a data collection approach for your target population. Develop an informed      rationale for selecting that approach.

By tomorrow Wednesday 09/13/17, write a minimum of 550 words essay in APA format with a minimum of 3 references from the list in the instructions area. Include the level one headings as numbered below:

Post a cohesive response that addresses the following questions:

1) What are the researchable populations in your area of practice? Which would be most appropriate for use in your research study?

2) What are the challenges of obtaining a sample from this population? How could you address those challenges?

3) What approach would you use to collect data from the sample? Provide a rationale for the approach you choose based on this week’s Learning Resources.

Levels Of Measurement – 2025

Levels of Measurement

There are many different methods for analyzing quantitative data; each method is dependent on the type of data gathered as well as the research question being addressed. The first step in analyzing data is to determine what kind of data you have—the level of measurement. Determining the level of measurement is a method of classifying the variables within a research study. Classifying a variable into its appropriate level of measurement helps a researcher determine the most appropriate statistical analysis for those data and to interpret the data the variable generates.

In this Discussion, you identify independent and dependent variables in your research problem, which you identified in the Week 2 Discussion. You classify these variables into their appropriate levels of measurement and determine suitable ways of analyzing the data generated by each variable.

To prepare:

  • Review the materials presented in Chapter 1 of      the Polit textbook.
  • Consider Dr. Pothoff’s comments in this week’s      media presentation on data analysis.
  • Recall your research problem statement      developed for the Week 2 Discussion. Based on your problem statement,      develop a research question to address the problem.
  • Ask yourself:

  • Does the research question involve a       comparison of groups or the relationship of variables?
  • How many independent variables do I have?       Dependent variables? What are they?
  • Is the independent variable categorical or       continuous?
  • Is the dependent variable categorical or       continuous?
  • What might be the advantages, or       disadvantages, of each variable’s level of measurement?

By tomorrow Thursday 09/20/17, 8 am, write a minimum of 550 words essay in APA format with a minimum of 3 references from the list in the instructions area. Include the level one and two headings as numbered and lettered below:

Post a cohesive summary of the following:

1) Post your research question. (formulate a research question based on “the nursing shortage” assignment u did for me last week – See attached file) it must be using “PICO”

a) Describe the independent and dependent variables

2) Identify the level of measurement of both the independent and dependent variables.

b) Provide a brief rationale for your classification of each variable.

3) Discuss considerations of analyzing data related to each variable based on its level of measurement.

c) Identify any advantages or challenges you might encounter in your statistical analysis of each variable.
