As we learned in Week 1, there is a difference between being educated and simply trained. The purpose of education is not only to determine what someone can do, but also what kind of person they become as a result of their education. Studies in the humanities will advance the communication skills, empathy, self-awareness, judgment, and professionalism of students, and they help students with becoming skilled at the social and cultural context of working with people.

In addition, studying the humanities can help students in the following ways:

• Literature can introduce students to life situations with which they may not be familiar.
• Drama can teach oral communication.
• Philosophy can teach skills of analysis and argument.
• Art, literature, drama. and music are expressions of human creativity, and taking part in some form of artistic activity, either as reader or viewer, is part of what makes us human.

For this assignment, choose a work of art that made an impression on you during this course. Then, address the following:

• Include an image of or link to the work.
• Identify the artist, the title, date completed, and the medium.
• Explain how learning about the work will help you in your life and career. Consider the context in which the work was created and the meaning of the work.
• Explain how one or more specific disciplines (literature, drama, philosophy, art, music) influenced you.
• Examine the effect that you think this class could have on your career and personal life.

To Prepare

Part 1: ANA Competencies and Standards Identification

• Review the American Nurses Association competencies found in the Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice and reflect on the ANA functional areas detailed to determine which interests you the most. 
• Review the TIGER competencies and reflect on which of these you could develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas.
• Review the QSEN competencies and reflect on which of these you could develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas.

Part 2: ANA Competencies and Standards in Practice

• Identify a nurse informaticist to interview. You may interview the same nurse informaticist you interviewed in Module 2.
• Set up an interview date and time. Consult the Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout for guidance. In the Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout, you will find a form for the interview subject to sign as proof for the interview occurring.
• Develop interview questions that address all of the following:
  • An explanation of the interview subject’s current role.
  • A description of the challenges the interview subject has overcome, currently encounters, and foresees.
  • A description of how the ANA functional areas, TIGER competencies, and QSEN competencies relate to the interview subject’s role.
• Evaluate your responses in Part 1 and compare your responses with the responses from your interview subject.

The Assignment

Part 1: ANA Competencies and Standards Identification

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

• Identify the ANA functional areas you are interested in and explain why.
• Identify the TIGER competencies you might develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas you identified and explain why.
• Identify the QSEN competencies you might develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas you identified and explain why.

Part 2: ANA Competencies and Standards in Nursing Practice

Create a 6- to 8-slide PowerPoint presentation that addresses the following:

• Explain how your vision of your future as a nurse informaticist compares with the interview subject’s current role. To support your explanation, identify at least one area that has prompted you to change your vision of the future and explain how or why. Then, identify at least one area that aligns with your vision of the future and explain how or why.
• Compare the challenges you foresee in the nurse informaticist role with the challenges your interview subject regularly encounters. To support your comparison, identify at least one challenge that has prompted you to change your interpretation of typical challenges and explain how or why. Then, identify at least one area that aligns with your interpretation of typical challenges and explain how or why.
• Determine how the ANA functional areas, TIGER competencies, and QSEN competencies you identified relate to your interview subject’s current role. Are these functional areas and competencies still relevant or aligned to your future role as a nurse informaticist? Why or why not?
• Based on your responses in Part 1, evaluate whether your assessment of your own knowledge, skills, and attitudes about the functional areas, standards, or competencies has changed, broadened, or strengthened your alignment based on your interview. Be sure to refer to your Part 1 responses and explain the change (or lack of change).
• Provide references in APA style at the end of your presentation—the reference slide or slides do not count toward your Assignment total.
• Submit the completed parts of the Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout.

Five decades after the murder of Civil Rights leader the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., America finally had its first Black President in Barack Obama.  But many see among the forces that elected Donald Trump as our current President a reactionary regression to white nationalism and fanning the flames of racism.  They see America as more divided today than it has been in some time.  Others see it differently and say it’s all about “making America great again.”

Whatever your politics may be, let’s ask ourselves about racism and other forms of discrimination in America today.

Consider the 2012 case of the 17 year old unarmed Trayvon Martin who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman who regularly watched for suspicious persons in the Sanford Florida neighborhood where Trayvon lived. Zimmerman was later acquitted of all criminal charges in this killing.  Or consider another case that same year of the 47 year old software engineer Michael Dunn who confronted four Black teens about their loud rap music in their SUV at a Florida convenience store. Dunn claimed he felt threatened and fired 10 shots into the SUV killing 17 year old Jordan Davis. Dunn fled the scene but later reported the incident to the police, claiming self-defense. On February 15, 2014, Dunn was convicted of attempted murder against the three surviving teens but the jury could not reach a verdict on the charge of his murdering Jordan Davis.  He was later retried and sentence to life without parole for the killing.

For this week’s discussion on equality and discrimination, please answer just ONE of the following two questions and then post at least two reply postings to others in the discussion:

[1] What do you see as the difference between individual racism and systemic racism and which if any are at work in the killings of Trayvon Martin or of Jordan Davis? Explain your position. Discuss the case you choose with two different people, preferably at least one of them being a person of color. Do they see racism at work in this case, and, if so, do they see it as individual racism or systemic racism or both? 

Another appalling form of discrimination and abuse is sexism.  Many thought that the access Hollywood tape that came out last fall showing the sexism of Donald Trump would sink his chance of becoming President but it did not.  Sexism is widespread today.  One would hope we have made progress against sexism but now we have the news of the accusations against the filmmaker Harvey Weinstein, which many are saying is not news because his alleged history of sexual harassment and abuse against women was known.   And others say this is only the tip of the iceberg regarding what is all too common today in many places.  Here’s a news clip on the accusations against Weinstein: LINK (Links to an external site.).

[2] Do you believe that sexism, sexual discrimination, and sexual abuse are systemic problems in today’s world or can they be viewed and judged on an individual basis as individual problems of certain people?  And if one concludes they are systemic problems, does this mitigate the individual responsibility of those who practice it?  Or if it is purely an individual problem, how can we explain its prevalence around the world and in so many parts of our own society?

Ethical Decision-Making

Let’s return to the ethical scenario presented within Page 2 of the Explore section of Week 4 to consider it further. Upon learning that a medication error occurred resulting in a child’s death, the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) of a regional acute care facility held a press conference to announce the mistake. The conference centered on reporter questions about why the nurse was not fired. The CNO explained that the nurse was highly regarded and that the problem was a “system” problem, not simply a problem of an incompetent nurse. The CNO also explained that an examination of the medication administration procedures was ordered and that an electronic medication error avoidance system would be implemented to ensure that such an error would not happen again. Consider this scenario to address the following.

· As the CNO in the scenario, defend your decision to disclose the incident to the media. How does this decision influence value-based healthcare? What risks might you encounter? What impact might this decision have on you personally and professionally?

·  At a regional health consortium, fellow CNOs remark that they would not disclose such an incident to the media. Provide two justifications for withholding disclosure of the error to the public. How does this decision influence value-based healthcare?

·  Imagine you are the patient’s family. How would you want the issue to be handled by the CNO? Explain your rationale

Step 1: Consider the scenario:

You are a speechwriter for the mayor of Oakland. This is an election year and already the mayor’s opposition is out in force. Henry Levine, the leading GOP candidate, recently aired an advertisement on local television blasting the mayor for his handling of the city’s recent demonstrations, most of which are aimed at overturning the current financial structure of Oakland:

We know that Mayor Brooks, a graduate of Johns Hopkins Business School, is an intelligent man. He graduated first in his class and received the 1997 Young Economists’ Essay Award, becoming the youngest recipient in history to do so. Why then do we, the upstanding residents of Oakland, find our streets littered with young and disgruntled vagrants calling for anarchy as a solution to the status quo? We need look no further than the house of cards built by our current mayor. Oaklanders deserve better than what this mayor can offer. They deserve what I, Henry Levine, can offer each and every Oaklander next year.

Step 2: Assess the candidate’s speech.

Before you can begin writing the mayor’s rebuttal, you must first analyze the qualities present in Henry Levine’s initial argument. In a two-page (minimum) letter to Mayor Brooks, address the following as it pertains to Levine’s speech:

• When does Henry Levine’s speech consist of primarily cognitive content? When is it primarily emotive?
• What are the primary benefits of using primarily cognitive content within this political context? What are the benefits of emotive content?
• Identify any occurrence of bias within Levine’s speech. How can bias influence reliability?
• Evaluate the soundness of Henry Levine’s message. Do you believe his ideas are being clearly conveyed? Why or why not?
