Assignment: Assessing Clients With Addictive Disorders

Addictive disorders can be particularly  challenging for clients. Not only do these disorders typically interfere  with a client’s ability to function in daily life, but they also often  manifest as negative and sometimes criminal behaviors. Sometime clients  with addictive disorders also suffer from other mental health issues,  creating even greater struggles for them to overcome. In your role, you  have the opportunity to help clients address their addictions and  improve outcomes for both the clients and their families. For this  Assignment, as you examine the Levy Family video in this week’s Learning Resources, consider how you might assess and treat clients presenting with addiction.

The Assignment

In a 2- to 3-page paper, address the following:

• After watching Episode 1, describe:
  • What is Mr. Levy’s perception of the problem?
  • What is Mrs. Levy’s perception of the problem?
  • What can be some of the implications of the problem on the family as a whole?
• After watching Episode 2, describe:
  • What did you think of Mr. Levy’s social worker’s ideas? 
  • What were your thoughts of her supervisor’s questions about her suggested therapies and his advice to Mr. Levy’s supervisor?
• After watching Episode 3, discuss the following:
  • What were your thoughts about the way Mr. Levy’s therapist responded to what Mr. Levy had to say?
  • What were your impressions of how the therapist worked with Mr. Levy? What did you think about the therapy session as a whole? 
  • Informed by your knowledge of pathophysiology, explain the  physiology of deep breathing (a common technique that we use in helping  clients to manage anxiety). Explain how changing breathing mechanics can  alter blood chemistry.
  • Describe the therapeutic approach his therapist selected. Would  you use exposure therapy with Mr. Levy? Why or why not? What evidence  exists to support the use of exposure therapy (or the therapeutic  approach you would consider if you disagree with exposure therapy)?
• In Episode 4, Mr. Levy tells a very difficult story about Kurt, his platoon officer. 
  • Discuss how you would have responded to this revelation. 
  • Describe how this information would inform your therapeutic approach. What would you say/do next?
• In Episode 5, Mr. Levy’s therapist is having issues with his story. 
  • Imagine that you were providing supervision to this therapist, how would you respond to her concerns?
• Support your approach with evidence-based literature.

In the Research Paper, you will apply the sources from your Annotated Bibliography (and others you may find after submitting the Annotated Bibliography) to explore the use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in healthcare, including options for Bible-based dispute resolution, focusing on the issues raised in using ADR to resolve malpractice claims without, or limiting, litigation.

Your paper must examine what options you would recommend for your healthcare facility with support from your research and analysis. 

The final paper must include at least 5 scholarly sources other than the Reading & Study materials and the Bible, cited in-text and in a reference list. You must also integrate biblical analysis of the topic into the paper.

The Research Paper must contain at least 1,500 words and follow current APA format. The title page, abstract, and reference list do not count towards the length requirement. 

QUESTION :

Explore the use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in healthcare, including options for Bible-based dispute resolution, focusing on the issues raised in using ADR to resolve malpractice claims without, or limiting, litigation. Your paper must examine what options you would recommend for your healthcare facility with support from your research and analysis. 

Week 7 Presentation of Community Teaching Project 

Utilize the epidemiologic process to identify a community health need or problem. Plan, implement, and evaluate a group health teaching project to meet the identified need.

Assignment Instructions: 

1. Select a topic and get instructor approval to move forward with it. 
2. Select your target community group that you will focus on educating. It should consist of approximately 10 individuals. A minimum of two different teaching sessions should be presented to the same group at least one week apart.
3. Once your topic is approved and a teaching group is chosen, you will create a teaching plan, hold your teaching sessions, and then evaluate the implementation.
4. The final product you submit will be a presentation that details the entire process: your chosen topic, the teaching style you used, and an evaluation of your actual teaching. (See categories below for details to include.)
5. Prepare a 15- to 20-slide presentation that is a minimum of 20 minutes in duration. You should have APA formatted in-text citations within your slides for any outside sources used and your final slide should be a reference slide that lists all resources used for the assignment.

            Items to Include in Presentation:

1. Provide a comprehensive statement of the problem using the epidemiological process including the distribution, determinants, and deterrents. 
2. Incorporate at least four current literature review findings as a theoretical base for your project/paper. 
3. Describe community resources available to meet the need of the specific community in this problem area. Summarize the resources available and describe their effectiveness for the community. 
4. Describe your selected group. Identify and summarize the learner needs of your selected group. What are the needs? Why does this group need to be educated on your chosen topic?
5. Identify and describe developmental and teaching/learning theory/theories used and why they are appropriate to the learners you targeted.
6. Describe in behavioral terms your specific planning process for your project and overall teaching goal for your participants.
7. Evaluate your teaching experience. Reflect on the following questions. What went well? What did not? What would you change if you were teaching this topic to a similar group at a later date and why?

PD: The TOPIC I choose was Substance Abuse”. There is a large amount of students as young as elementary and high school that have access to alcohol, tobacco( vapping) and other dangerous drugs that are very harmful and highly addictive. This is a vulnerable population that we need to protect.

“Mrs. Walsh, a woman in her 70s, was in critical condition after repeat coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Her family lived nearby when Mrs. Walsh had her first CABG surgery. They had moved out of town but returned to our institution, where the first surgery had been performed successfully. Mrs. Walsh remained critically ill and unstable for several weeks before her death. Her family was very anxious because of Mrs. Walsh’s unstable and deteriorating condition, and a family member was always with her 24 hours a day for the first few weeks.
The nurse became involved with this family while Mrs. Walsh was still in surgery, because family members were very anxious that the procedure was taking longer than it had the first time and made repeated calls to the critical care unit to ask about the patient. The nurse met with the family and offered to go into the operating room to talk with the cardiac surgeon to better inform the family of their mother’s status.
One of the helpful things the nurse did to assist this family was to establish a consistent group of nurses to work with Mrs. Walsh, so that family members could establish trust and feel more confident about the care their mother was receiving. This eventually enabled family members to leave the hospital for intervals to get some rest. The nurse related that this was a family whose members were affluent, educated, and well informed, and that they came in prepared with lists of questions. A consistent group of nurses who were familiar with Mrs. Walsh’s particular situation helped both family members and nurses to be more satisfied and less anxious. The family developed a close relationship with the three nurses who consistently cared for Mrs. Walsh and shared with them details about Mrs. Walsh and her life.
The nurse related that there was a tradition in this particular critical care unit not to involve family members in care. She broke that tradition when she responded to the son’s and the daughter’s helpless feelings by teaching them some simple things that they could do for their mother. They learned to give some basic care, such as bathing her. The nurse acknowledged that involving family members in direct patient care with a critically ill patient is complex and requires knowledge and sensitivity. She believes that a developmental process is involved when nurses learn to work with families.
She noted that after a nurse has lots of experience and feels very comfortable with highly technical skills, it becomes okay for family members to be in the room when care is provided. She pointed out that direct observation by anxious family members can be disconcerting to those who are insecure with their skills when family members ask things like, “Why are you doing this? Nurse ‘So and So’ does it differently.” She commented that nurses learn to be flexible and to reset priorities. They should be able to let some things wait that do not need to be done right away to give the family some time with the patient. One of the things that the nurse did to coordinate care was to meet with the family to see what times worked best for them; then she posted family time on the patient’s activity schedule outside her cubicle to communicate the plan to others involved in Mrs. Walsh’s care.
When Mrs. Walsh died, the son and daughter wanted to participate in preparing her body. This had never been done in this unit, but after checking to see that there was no policy forbidding it, the nurse invited them to participate. They turned down the lights, closed the doors, and put music on; the nurse, the patient’s daughter, and the patient’s son all cried together while they prepared Mrs. Walsh to be taken to the morgue. The nurse took care of all intravenous lines and tubes while the children bathed her. The nurse provided evidence of how finely tuned her skill of involvement was with this family when she explained that she felt uncomfortable at first because she thought that the son and daughter should be sharing this time alone with their mother. Then she realized that they really wanted her to be there with them. This situation taught her that families of critically ill patients need care as well. The nurse explained that this was a paradigm case that motivated her to move into a CNS role, with expansion of her sphere of influence from her patients during her shift to other shifts, other patients and their families, and other disciplines”
