Discussion: Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics,NURS 6521: Advanced Pharmacology, week 1 – 2025

As an advanced practice nurse assisting physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders, it is important to not only understand the impact of disorders on the body, but also the impact of drug treatments on the body. The relationships between drugs and the body can be described by pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

Pharmacokinetics describes what the body does to the drug through absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, whereas pharmacodynamics describes what the drug does to the body.

When selecting drugs and determining dosages for patients, it is essential to consider individual patient factors that might impact the patient’s pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes. These patient factors include genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, behavior (i.e., diet, nutrition, smoking, alcohol, illicit drug abuse), and/or pathophysiological changes due to disease.

For this Discussion, you reflect on a case from your past clinical experiences and consider how a patient’s pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes may alter his or her response to a drug.

To Prepare
  • Review the Resources for this module and consider the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
  • Reflect on your experiences, observations, and/or clinical practices from the last 5 years and think about how pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic factors altered his or her anticipated response to a drug.
  • Consider factors that might have influenced the patient’s pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes, such as genetics (including pharmacogenetics), gender, ethnicity, age, behavior, and/or possible pathophysiological changes due to disease.
  • Think about a personalized plan of care based on these influencing factors and patient history in your case study.
By Day 3 of Week 1

Post a description of the patient case from your experiences, observations, and/or clinical practice from the last 5 years. Then, describe factors that might have influenced pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes of the patient you identified. Finally, explain details of the personalized plan of care that you would develop based on influencing factors and patient history in your case. Be specific and provide examples.

Politics and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – 2025

Regardless of political affiliation, individuals often grow concerned when considering perceived competing interests of government and their impact on topics of interest to them. The realm of healthcare is no different. Some people feel that local, state, and federal policies and legislation can be either helped or hindered by interests other than the benefit to society.

Consider for example that the number one job of a legislator is to be reelected. Cost can be measured in votes as well as dollars. Thus, it is important to consider the legislator’s perspective on either promoting or not promoting a certain initiative in the political landscape.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on efforts to repeal/replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
  • Consider who benefits the most when policy is developed and in the context of policy implementation.

ASSIGNMENT

· Explain how you think the cost-benefit analysis in terms of legislators being reelected affected efforts to repeal/replace the ACA.

· Then, explain how analyses of the voter’s views may affect decisions by legislative leaders in recommending or positioning national policies (e.g., Congress’ decisions impacting Medicare or Medicaid).

· Remember, the number one job of a legislator is to be re-elected.

The reported procedure codes were: 29515, 73090

· Identify the error in the claim and explain why it might be improperly paid or denied (3 points)

· Describe how this error could be remedied (3 points)

·  Explain in a few sentences the impact of reporting the code(s) incorrectly. Think about reimbursement, compliance, coder performance, reporting, and any other processes that are affected by coding and claim submission. (4 points)

BASE ON THE EXAM I’M WEAK WITH DIAGNOSIS & STRENGTH IS ETHIC

Based on your practice exam question results from Week 2, identify strengths and areas of opportunity and create a tailored study plan to use throughout this course to help you prepare for the national certification exam. This will serve as an action plan to help you track your goals, tasks, and progress. You will revisit and update your study plan in NRNP 6675, and you may continue to refine and use it until you take the exam.

To Prepare

  • Reflect on your practice exam question results from Week 2. Identify content-area strengths and opportunities for improvement.
  • Also reflect on your overall test taking. Was the length of time allotted comfortable, or did you run out of time? Did a particular question format prove difficult?

The Assignment

  • Based on your practice test question results, and considering the national certification exam, summarize your strengths and opportunities for improvement. Note: Your grade for this Assignment will not be derived from your test results but from your self-reflection and study plan.
  • Create a study plan for this quarter to prepare for the certification exam, including three or four SMART goals and the tasks you need to complete to accomplish each goal. Include a timetable for accomplishing them and a description of how you will measure your progress.
  • Describe resources you would use to accomplish your goals and tasks, such as ways to participate in a study group or review course, mnemonics and other mental strategies, and print or online resources you could use to study.

Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault: Jessica – 2025

Sexual assault includes any type of sexual activity to which an individual does not agree. Jessica, a 16-year-old high school  sophomore, expresses concern to the school nurse practitioner that she knows someone who might  have had sex “without knowing it.” How can the nurse practitioner answer these common questions?  Reflective Questions  1. What are date rape drugs and how can a person be unaware that such a drug has been  ingested?  2. What can you do to protect yourself?  3. What do you do if you think you have been sexually assaulted? 4. What can you do when someone you care about has been sexually assaulted? 5. What approach do the authors use to   establish content validity?

Content validity is the “degree to which an   instrument has an appropriate sample of items for the construct being   measured and adequately covers the construct domain.” To ensure a   “content-valid” instrument, researchers should start with a conceptualization   of the construct. This can be based on:

· First-hand   knowledge

· Literature   review

· Expert   consultations

· Preliminary   qualitative studies

What type of sampling plan was used?   Would an alternative sampling plan have been preferable? Was the sampling   plan one that could be expected to yield a representative sample?

Sampling plan.

Alternative sampling plan

If sampling was stratified, was a useful   stratification variable selected? If a consecutive sample was used, was the   time period long enough to address seasonal or temporal variation?

If   cluster sampling was utilized, what were the clusters and   how was sampling done within clusters?

What approach do the authors use to   establish discriminant validity?

Discriminant   validity is “the ability to differentiate a construct from other similar   constructs.”
