Becoming Familiar with the DNP Scholarly Project

 

As a doctoral candidate, you will complete a DNP (Doctorate of Nursing Practice) Scholarly Project. Are you curious about what will be required of you? For this Assignment, you locate and read materials that pertain to your doctoral program at Walden University, and begin thinking about your DNP Scholarly Project.

 

To prepare:

 

DNP students:

• Review the DNP section of the Walden University website (http://researchcenter.waldenu.edu/DNP-Doctoral-Study-Program.htm. (type this in your browser and it will open the page)
• Carefully review the requirements for the DNP Scholarly Project process.
• Consider the steps and timeline you will work through to complete the DNP Scholarly project.

 

To complete:

 

Write a 1-page paper outlining the steps, timeline for completing the project / dissertation, and the documents you will use for the DNP Scholarly Project. Include the main guide document that identifies the processes and procedures for the appropriate doctoral project. After writing the 1-page,then:

1)       Summarize the purpose of the DNP Scholarly Project.

2)       Briefly describe a project that would be of interest to you and how you might go about completing that project. (Just write any project related to nursing. I haven’t thought about my project yet)

 In this media program, Dr. Joan Stanley, Dr. Linda Beechinor, and Dr. Susan Stefan discuss the professional roles available to DNP-prepared nurses and the importance of intra- and interprofessional collaboration in those roles.

 

You will post a final draft of a PowerPoint presentation conveying the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of your Practicum Project. It is essential that you begin developing your presentation as soon as possible. This will also serve as your Portfolio Assignment for this course.

Review the Practicum Project Presentation Overview, provided in this week’s Learning Resources, for details about this assignment.

Preview the instructions in the Week 10 Discussion. Note that the draft of your PowerPoint presentation posted in the online forum should be complete and polished, i.e., it should be your final draft. While you will have an opportunity to make revisions based on your colleagues’ feedback, the document you share should reflect your best effort to create a thoughtful, clear, and engaging presentation.

Begin working on this assignment as soon as possible.

The development and completion of your Practicum Project is a significant milestone in your Master of Science in Nursing program of study. It is now time to share the results of your effort. As you know, there are many traditional formats you can use to share your results, such as presenting at a professional conference or publishing an article in a journal. As a leader with advanced practice knowledge, you may also have the opportunity to present your results virtually. Webinars and virtual workshops are additional methods professionals can use to share knowledge and evidence-based findings.

As you prepare to share your presentation virtually in this Discussion, think about what you would like to convey about your project to your colleagues in this course and to your practicum Faculty Member. What considerations should you take into account as you prepare to present your Practicum Project findings, conclusions, and recommendations online? What strategies can you use to ensure your presentation clearly articulates your results in the virtual environment? Keep these thoughts in mind as you prepare your final draft of your Practicum Project presentation.

To prepare:

Review the Practicum Project Presentation Overview document, included in the Week 9 Learning Resources, and preview the instructions in this week’s Assignment.

Review the information in the Learning Resources, including the suggestions for creating effective PowerPoint presentations.

Consider the distinctions between delivering a presentation in person, e.g., at a professional conference or at your practicum site, and presenting online. What considerations do you need to take into account as you prepare to share your presentation with your colleagues in this online forum? What steps do you need to take to ensure the information is conveyed clearly and effectively?

Using PowerPoint, complete the final draft of your Practicum Project presentation, (as indicated in the Practicum Project Presentation Overview document and this week’s Assignment). Note that the draft of your PowerPoint presentation posted in this online forum should be complete and polished. While you will have an opportunity to make revisions based on your colleagues’ feedback, the document you share should reflect your best effort to create a thoughtful, clear, and engaging presentation.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post the final draft of your Practicum Project presentation (by attaching your PowerPoint to your post). Explain the distinctions that you took into account as you prepared to share your presentation online.

Keep in mind that your presentation must demonstrate graduate-level writing and presentation standards. Your presentation will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

Inclusion of all required content, e.g., evidence of scholarly products developed for the Practicum Project

Effective communication and appropriate emphasis of content

Organization and clarity

Visual appeal

Selecting a Population Health Problem

As you know, promoting positive social change is a part of the Walden mission. To be an effective agent for social change, nurses must be able to logically and critically analyze population health issues using epidemiologic concepts, and then communicate insights in a succinct and professional manner. This exercise will afford you such an experience.

This week, you will complete Assignment 1 in preparation for Major Assessment 7, in which you will apply epidemiologic principles and develop an intervention for a health problem.

For this Assignment, you will examine a health problem of interest to you, and you will develop a brief paper (2 pages) outlining the significance of the health problem and describing it in terms of person, place, and time. This outline will help your Instructor determine if the topic you selected is appropriate for the Major Assessment paper.

Prepare for Assignment 1 as follows:

• Review      the Major      Assessment Overview (see attached).
• Determine      a population health problem that is viable for completing this paper. You      may use the problem you identified in the Week 1, 2,      or Week 3 Discussion, or you may select a new one.
• Determine      the characteristics of the health problem in terms of person, place, and      time.
• Using      the Walden Library and credible websites, conduct additional research on      your selected population health problem. Consider the significance of this      health problem.
• Examine      how Healthy People 2020, listed in the Learning Resources, supports the      importance of addressing your selected health problem.
• Develop      a preliminary research question or hypothesis appropriate for your topic.

To complete:

Write a  2-page paper that addresses the following:

  

1) Introduction (must end with a purpose statement, e.g. “the purpose of this paper is …)

2) Describe the population health problem in terms of person, place, and time.

3) From the primary research literature and Healthy People 2020, briefly explain the significance of this health problem.

4) Include your preliminary research question or hypothesis. (PICOT format for the research question).

5) A conclusion

Chapter 6 presents an overview of analytic study designs used in epidemiology, differentiating between experimental studies (which will be addressed next week) and observational studies (the focus of this week). In the chapter, the authors address three varieties of observational studies—ecological, cross-sectional, and case control. Chapter 7 addresses cohort studies, another form of observational design.

A consortium of scientists and medical researchers created a checklist of 22 recommended items that should be included in reports about three common observational study designs: case-control, cohort, and cross-sectional studies.
