The Nurse as Advocate

In a Microsoft Word document of 5-6 pages formatted in APA style, you will describe the advocacy process. Whether nurses are advocating for their patients, health care, and/or policies that improve people’s lives, the advocacy processes have commonalities that transcend the subject of their advocacy. There are also differences, although these differences may be more nuanced than obvious.

Review the following chapters from your course textbook:

• Taking Action: Nurse, Educator, and Legislator: My Journey to the Delaware Senate
• Taking Action: A Nurse in the Board Room

Respond to the following questions based on your readings:

• 1. Describe what you believe to be the drivers for each of the individual advocates.
• 2. What factors led the individuals to become advocates?
• 3. Discuss the challenges that each of the individuals identified in their writings.
• 4. Analyze these drivers and challenges and compare them with your own experience to date as an advocate.
• 5. In what ways do you believe you can expand your advocacy skills within the next five years?

Re: Topic 3 DQ 1

Medical and scientific advancements have changed the way we define health and rightfully so; diseases and available treatments are vastly different than in the past. Disease that were once death sentences are now virtually eradicated, for example polio or measles, in developed countries due to advances in immunizations. With these advancements the focus of healthcare has shifted from treatment to prevention and health promotion; if people can transition to a healthier daily lifestyle, they will not get sick in the first place. As stated in our Health Promotion textbook health promotion is, “The process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It moves beyond a focus on individual behavior toward a wide range of social and environmental interventions” (GCU 2018). Even health promotion has changed overtime in the United States, instead of focusing on disease prevention we have begun to focus on preventable chronic illness, such as diabetes and hypertension, with an overall goal of a healthy lifestyle. Per our Health Promotion textbook, “The goal is to create a culture of health in which health promotion and disease prevention is the focus rather than seeking treatment for disease” (GCU 2018). Organizations such as the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) are encouraging Americans to take a more proactive approach to their health rather than reactive.

Nurses play a large role in health promotion as it is a part of our daily activities when interacting with our patients; every time we step into that room is a chance to education. As stated in our Health Promotion textbook we are educators, “A major role for the nurse is that of the educator … Teaching health promotion and prevention strategies are key to saving lives and helping patients and families live their best lives” (GCU 2018). Utilizing evidence-based practice (EBP) is a vital tool as it is tested and proven information that can be used to educate our patients on health strategies. Educating our patient with the newest, most up-to-date information will not only improve health promotion but will ultimately aid our patients into making true, long-term lifestyle changes.

Marketing Plan

MSN-prepared nurses must be prepared to market themselves to others so that the key characteristics and contributions of their expertise and the role are recognized and valued in the healthcare environment. The purpose of this assignment is to develop a marketing plan for your chosen advanced nursing practice role. As you prepare this marketing plan, develop this presentation as if you were explaining the advanced nursing practice role to a potential employer who may be unfamiliar with the role. You will educate your audience on the value you bring to the healthcare team. This assignment will be prepared as a 7-10 slide PowerPoint presentation meeting the following criteria.

Directions:

1. Examine the advanced nursing practice role for which you are being prepared (NP) and briefly describe the role including the history of the role, education and certification, and major functions of this role.
2. Create a marketing plan to support your value to the healthcare team. You will need to look at the literature beyond nursing. Address each of the 4Ps to market your advanced nursing practice role.
3. Investigate at least two of the Central and Core Competencies (i.e., Direct Clinical Practice, Guidance and Coaching, Consultation, Evidence-based Practice, Leadership, Collaboration, Ethical Decision Making) described in Hamric’s Integrative Model of Advanced Practice Nursing and how these competencies can influence and advance healthcare.

Your presentation must be presented in a single PowerPoint presentation. The presentation must be between 7 and 10 slides in length, not including the title and reference list slides. The presentation must use proper APA formatting as directed in the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition formatting, including title slide and reference list with properly formatted citations in the body of the presentation. You will record this as a voice-over PowerPoint. This must be at least 10 minutes in length.

Assignment 2: Policy Identification

According to the Council on Social Work Education, Competency 5: Engage in Policy Practice:

Social workers understand that human rights and social justice, as well as social welfare and services, are mediated by policy and its implementation at the federal, state, and local levels. Social workers understand the history and current structures of social policies and services, the role of policy in service delivery, and the role of practice in policy development. Social workers understand their role in policy development and implementation within their practice settings at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels and they actively engage in policy practice to effect change within those settings. Social workers recognize and understand the historical, social, cultural, economic, organizational, environmental, and global influences that affect social policy. They are also knowledgeable about policy formulation, analysis, implementation, and evaluation. Social workers:

• Identify social policy at the local, state, and federal level that impacts well-being, service delivery, and access to social services;
• Assess how social welfare and economic policies impact the delivery of and access to social services;
