Research Critique Paper

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your ability to evaluate one quantitative or qualitative nursing research article of interest from any refereed nursing journal. Writing a critical review of a journal article can help to improve your writing and analytical skills. By assessing the work of others, you develop skills as a critical reader and become familiar with the types of evaluation criteria necessary to translating the evidence to practice. 

Instructions: 

1. Write a 2 pages assignment. 
2. Choose a primary nursing research article of interest from a refereed nursing journal. Attach a copy of the article.
3. Begin your critique by identifying the: 
   • article’s title
   • author(s)
   • date of publication
   • name of the journal or other publication in which it appeared
   • Where and when was the article published? 
   • In your introduction, you should also briefly describe the purpose and nature of the study and, if applicable, its theoretical framework. 
   • If the paper was not published in a peer-reviewed journal, consider the credibility of the publication in which it appeared. 
4. If you are reviewing a research study, organize the body of your critique according to the paper’s structure. Start with a brief description and analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the research design and methodology. For example: 
   1. How does the method reflect other studies of the same topic? (sample, data collection, setting). 
   2. What makes this method feasible? 
   3. How realistic is it? How does the method address questions of validity? 
   4. How does the researcher overcome the limitations of the method? 
   5. Are there large limitations or minor ones? 
   6. How will these limitations affect your ability to use this data to answer your research question? 
5. Describe the results by answering:
   1. How were the results interpreted? 
   2. How were they related to the original problem (author’s view of evidence rather than objective findings)? 
   3. Look at DISCUSSION. Were the author(s) able to answer the question (test the hypothesis) raised? 
   4. Did the research provide new factual information, a new understanding of a phenomenon in the field, a new research technique? 
   5. How was the significance of the work described? 
   6. Did the reported observations/interpretations support or refute observations or interpretations made by other researchers? 
6. Describe the significance of the research by answering:
   1. Did the research make a significant contribution to human knowledge? 
   2. Did the research produce any practical applications? 
   3. What are the nursing implications of this research? 
   4. How do you evaluate the significance of the research?

A manufacturing facility that makes steel materials handling devices such as hand carts and an assortment of roller carts for moving heavy materials around in manufacturing facilities has decided to start making cantilever storage racking systems. This will require the purchase and installation of a 12-foot hydraulic press brake and a 12-foot shear in the fabrication department along with the necessary tools and dies to bend and punch holes in the rack components that will largely be manufactured from formed sheet metal. Employees have experience working smaller versions of this type of equipment, but room will need to be made and larger pieces of sheet metal will need to be cut and handled. The department will also need to continue to produce existing orders while the new equipment is installed. How can a management of change program be used to reduce risks in such a scenario?  Your response must be at least 75 words in length.

Your organization, a company that manufactures fitness equipment such as treadmills and elliptical machines, is about to introduce lean concepts into its operations in order to be more competitive with foreign manufacturers. The foreman from the assembly department, however, does not think that his employees have the time to be involved with the lean initiative. Provide a convincing argument about why it is important for the assembly line workers to play a part. Your response must be at least 75 words in length.

Your purchasing department does not want to buy adjustable hydraulic pallet stands for the filter assembly line at a company that makes oil filters for cars and trucks. They state that the current process works just fine and that expensive, adjustable stands are not required in the Occupational Health and Safety Administration standards. The production employees in the facility are largely female and many have worked at the facility for decades. The current process for accessing filter parts entails having assemblers bend over to pick up arm loads of the various filter components from a pallet or bin and placing them on a table beside their respective workstations. The parts are assembled and pressed into place, and the completed product placed in a separate bin. Please provide a risk-based argument as to why the adjustable pallet stands would be the better choice. Your response must be at least 125 words in length.

Stakeholder support is necessary for a successful project implementation. Consider your internal stakeholders, such as the facility, unit, or health care setting where the change proposal is being considered, and your external stakeholders, like an individual or group outside the health care setting. Why is their support necessary to the success of your change proposal, and how you will go about securing that support?

As I prepare to roll out my project to staff some of the biggest challenges I believe I will meet is with the reluctance to change.  Much of the way things are done currently are instilled as habits and due to the lack of monitoring, staff have found a way to implement methods of treatments that are the easy way.  For example, it is noted in the the scenario that it appears much of the patient satisfaction scores are going on monitored.  It’s easy to ignore because no one has required it be addressed.  When I approach a team of individuals and start requesting the various changes that I’m looking to initiate, I expect to be met with resistance. 

The first change that I am wanting to address is the number of patients leaving without being seen.  I will be requiring the staff to follow a new policy  involving the PCT to obtain vitals in the waiting room and laying eyes on every pt, every 30 minutes.  Any changes will need to be reported to the triage nurse.  Both of these require additional time and effort from the staff to ensure its being done correctly and that nothing is being missed.  Along with this policy being put in place, I will be tracking how the changes are affecting the LWBS as well as patient satisfaction scores and sharing them throughout the department. 

It is my hope that in my “pep rally” I will be able to get the staff excited about the opportunity to improve and grow, not only as a facility but as individuals.  Throughout the change process of this project I think it would also be important to identify a way for individuals to recognize one another for accomplishments.  This recognition of a job well done will assist with building our team and our teams bond. 

While I know there will be many more obstacles and challenges to this project, (including potential delays to progress to a new addition or running out of fund), without the support of the team to make this project work, it will be difficult to prove that we can have a positive impact on patient care , no matter how much more waiting room space we have or how many cool gadgets we put in it.
