Nurses impact on health policy 

Reflection upon life experiences and use of those experiences can help us to move forward or perhaps remain stagnant.  In separate weeks students will submit a written entry as a ‘reflective journal’, to express thoughts, connections and critical thinking related to the readings, discussions and assignment.

Part 1: Instructions:  Answer all questions in essay format with at least 300 words and two supportive citations from evidence-based practice source including the textbook per question.

Each area should be addressed in a separate paragraph. Each item should equal 300 words or more.

300 words—Question A: The Institute of Medicine has been quoted as stating: “[healthcare professionals including nurses] must see policy as something they can shape rather than something that happens to them” [Patton, Zalon, Ludwick, 2015 p. 3]   Compare your thoughts about specific laws, policies and healthcare before you read chapter 1 to after having read chapter1: What is different in your thinking? How has this chapter enhanced your knowledge and your perception of health policy and its impact on population groups? Provide example to support your statement. 

300 words—-Question B: Chapter 2 discusses interest groups; A) What are Interest Groups based on chapter 2? B) What role or purpose do interest groups play in health policy? C) Where are interest groups found if one wanted to contact them? Provide specific example of at least 3 interest groups and the service they provide D) How can you be a part of an interest group? What specific steps would you take E) Which interest group would you pick if you would join one and why? Explore the wounded worrier project interest group. State the mission of this group and why this group is important. How have they shaped the general populations perception and impacted the population they serve? 

 200 words—Part 2:  Address your ‘a-ha moment’ for this week: Elaborate on how Nurses and other healthcare officials have the power to influence the population perception of health and health care. Provide specific examples (client education) of what nurses can do to change client perception of health in a positive way and increase the populations overall health.

This is part 1 of your required term paper. In this part, you are to choose a topic as your focus. Choose a topic that will incorporate 3-4 of the concepts discussed within this course (such as ethics, leadership, communication, and quality) and write a short 50 word or less summary of what you plan to address. Then, develop an outline of information that you plan to include (Refer to the Outline Template and Grading Rubric). The provided outline template can be downloaded, and your information inserted into the outline. (see Outline Templates and Grading rubric attached below). Be sure to remove any wording that is not pertinent to your own work. 

Topics to Choose from:

1.Healthy Work Environment; how methods to resolve conflicts in the workplace are developed. How might patient care be affected when conflicts are present among nursing staff?

2. Emergency preparedness and response; how it relates to an emergency health threat such as a bioterrorism incident or the current CPVID-19 pandemic. How might patient care be affected, and policies and procedures changed?

3. Latent Errors: discuss the factors that may lead to latent errors involving nurses. How might patient care be affected?

(B)

In this discussion forum, you assigned the responsibility of examining the Self-Care Deficit Theory of Dorothea Orem. Please apply Orem’s theory to the case scenario provided below. In your discussion, include the role of the nurse in providing care to this patient and appropriate interventions to be used to help him meet his needs. Be sure to provide a rationale for your actions/interventions.

Case Scenario:

George is a 70-year-old patient who has been assigned to you as his community-based nurse case manager. George has severe congestive heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, and no family or social support. George had 15 admissions to the hospital and 35 visits to the emergency department this year from noncompliance with his medication and diet regimen. He receives a monthly social security check, which he spends on food, bingo, and medications (in that order)

Explain the positive and negative aspects of the living arrangements for the elderly listed below. Be sure to thoroughly evaluate each option.

Identify a theory that uses a concept of interest to you that can be applied in research and nursing practice (clinical, education, or administration). This is a professional paper in which headings, full sentences, paragraphs, correct grammar and punctuation, and correct citation of sources are required. 

The theory you select will be the same theory used for each assignment in the future modules.

Theory Description: Please write theory of  care transitions  by Meleis.

Provide a brief description of the theory using an original source or as close to the original source as possible.   Include a brief discussion of the origins of the theory and the scope/level (grand, middle range, practice/situation specific) of the theory.  Identify the major concepts of the theory and discuss how they are related (propositions).  Pick two of the concepts, including your concept of interest, and state theoretical definitions of these concepts. 

Style & Format:

The paper will be written using APA standards. The paper will include a title page (using specified format), 3 pages of text, and a reference list.  It will be double-spaced, written in 12-point Times New Roman font, and have 1-inch margins.  Professional and orderly presentation of ideas (precision, clarity, format, headings, grammar, spelling, & punctuation) with appropriate citation of sources in text and reference list is required.  Up to 0.5 points will be deducted for each type of grammar, spelling, punctuation, or format error.

Only primary sources and empirical research articles are to be used for this assignment. Secondary sources such as, textbooks, literature reviews, systematic reviews, dissertations and concept analyses are NOT to be used.

She is currently receiving oxygen through a nasal cannula at 3 L/min. You go into the room to assess her. You find that she is sitting up in bed at a 60-degree angle. She is restless and her respirations appear labored and rapid. Her skin is pale with circumoral cyanosis. You ask if she feels more short of breath. Because she is unable to catch her breath enough to speak, she nods her head yes. Which action should you take first? Why?

•      Listen to her breath sounds.

•      Ask when the shortness of breath started.

•      Increase her oxygen flow rate to 6 L/min.

•      Raise the head of the bed from 75 to 85 degrees
