ANDREA’S POST:

Information literacy is obtained by being able to collect, utilize, manage, integrate, and produce information and data while having the information skills to do so effectively (Forster, 2015) This literacy is important to nursing research because nurses need to be able to know how to decide what information is needed in research, how to properly obtain and review this research, all while being able to teach it effectively (McGongile & Mastrian, 2018). Information literacy is an ongoing battle for nursing students to be proficient in. In 2017, Willson and Angell performed a study to develop a rubric on measuring information literacy skills of which are crucial to undergraduate nurses’ development as researchers and health professionals. In this study they were able to develop a rubric and most nursing undergraduates showed low to fair competencies in information literacy.

Professional online databases and search engines both provide a source for an expansive amount of information. The difference between them is that professional online databases have exclusivity and generally require a subscription acquired through professional or academic associations. Search engines provide a wealth of information as well but there is no way of knowing the validity behind the information and is available to everyone.

An example of a professional online database is PubMed. Something unique about this database is that by default PubMed lists its corresponding records by date in which they were uploaded to the database.

Healthcare Ethics – 2025

Assignment:

This week students will create a powerpoint to address the following questions…

Case Study:

A mother expecting her first child miscarried at home on June 22, 2010. The pregnancy was six months along. An ambulance was called at 4:57 a.m. The EMTs helped the mother to the stretcher and then went inside to retrieve the fetus from the bathroom floor. The baby was seen moving its head. The EMTs requested ALS to the scene. The baby was placed inside a small container. The ALS personnel visually assessed the fetus and stated the fetus was “non-viable”. There was never a fetal heart check in the field. Mother and fetus were transported to the hospital arriving at 5:16 a.m.

At the hospital, a nurse noticed that the fetus was warm and had a heartbeat. The baby was raced to the special care nursery and placed on a warmer. The staff then proceeded to resuscitate the baby. The baby was dusky and noted to have a heart rate of 30 with respirations of 6-8 at 5:40 a.m., and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated. The oxygen saturation was 2-10%. The baby was intubated at 5:55 a.m. At 6:05 a.m., the blood pressure was 44/24. By 6:15 a.m., the baby was on a ventilator with oxygen saturation of 96%, a heart rate of 102, but remained dusky. By 6:30 a.m., the baby’s heart rate was 120 and blood pressure 52/24.

At 7:45 a.m., the baby was transported to a Boston hospital NICU for further care and treatment. Unfortunately, the baby died on August 10, 2010 at age 1 month and 16 days, not from prematurity but rather from brain damage due to lack of oxygen.

The plaintiffs’ claimed the accepted standard of care for basic and paramedic emergency medicine technicians in Massachusetts in 2010 required basic and paramedic EMTs to provide appropriate evaluation and treatment by following established protocols. It is beyond the scope of practice for EMTs at any level to make determinations in regard to viability of a patient. As a result of the negligence, the baby was improperly designated as “non-viable”, was placed in a Pizzeria Uno’s delivery plastic bag inside of a box with a lid on it further depriving the baby of oxygen, and as a result was not resuscitated for the first several minutes of life.

  1. Title page (1 slide)
  2. What are the facts of the case? This should include: what do we need to know, who is involved in the situation, where does the ethical situation take place, and when does it occur? (3-4 slides)
  3. What is the precise ethical issue in regards to autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, fidelity, and justice? (4-5 slides)
  4. Identify the major principles, rules, and values of the case.  Values are sets of beliefs about good and bad, right and wrong, and about many other aspects of living and interacting in the society with others. A principle is a personal rule that governs personal behavior. A rule is generally imposed by a figure of authority, and used to guide and govern people. (3-4 slides)
  5. Locate the scope of practice for EMTs in your state.  Is your scope of practice dictated by the state or facility the EMT works for? Does the scope of practice vary from state to state? Explain and support your answers (4-5 slides)
  6. Locate your professional code of ethics for EMTs.  Does the code of ethics address autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, fidelity, and justice? Explain and provide an example for each (5-6 slides)
  7. Based on the scope of practice and code of ethics found, do you support the EMT’s decision in this case? Why or why not? Be specific with examples (3-4 slides)
  8. If you were a member of the ethics committee at this facility, what actions or changes would you recommend changing? Why? (2-3 slides)

For the presentation, insure information is referenced and cited in your slides. The presentation should start with a title slide and end with a reference slides. At least 3 references are required for this assignment. You must include at least 5 pictures or graphics. All pictures or graphics taken from outside sources must be referenced and cited.

Assignment Expectations:

  • Length:
    • 25-33 slides
    • Use the tips at http://www.garrreynolds.com/preso-tips/design/ to create the slideshow.  Because good PowerPoints have very few words, submit a script that describes the content of each slide – about 50 words per slide.  Place this script in a separate Word document that shows each slide number and the text for each slide as shown in the provided PowerPoint Slide Notes.docx.

Discussion On Informed Consent – 2025

Discussion on Informed Consent

Participation Requirement: You are required to post a minimum of three (3) times in each discussion. These three (3) posts must be on a minimum of two (2) separate days. You must respond to the initial discussion question by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.  On additional days, respond to your peers’ posts as well as additional faculty posts. Responses to peers must be posted by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday each week a discussion is due.

Step 1: Read the attached article entitled, “Informed Consent – The Joint Commission”

Step 2: View the video entitled, “Nursing Fundamentals: Informed Consent, Advance Directives, Reporting and Nursing Documentation”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9u53jNI4qoU (Links to an external site.)

Informed consent is obtained after a client receives complete disclosure of all pertinent information provided by the provider regarding the surgery or procedure to be performed. The nurse may obtain informed consent only after the client verbalizes understanding of the potential benefits and risks associated with the surgery or procedure.

Elements of Informed Consent:

  1. The individual giving consent must fully understand the procedure that will be performed, the risks involved, expected/desired outcomes, expected complications/side effects, and alternative treatments or therapies available.
  2. Consent is given by a competent adult, legal guardian or designated power of attorney (DPOA), emancipated or married minor, parent of a minor, or a court order.
  3. A trained medical interpreter must be provided when the person giving consent is unable to communicate due to a language barrier.
  4. The nurse’s role is to witness the client’s signature and ensure the provider gave the necessary information and that the client understood and is competent to sign. If it has been identified that the client does not understand the procedure or is not competent to sign the informed consent, the nurse must STOP the process and the physician must be notified immediately.

A consultation occurs when a professional provides expert advice in a particular area and determines what treatment or services the client requires. The nursing intervention evolves around facilitating coordination with other health care providers throughout the continuum of care in order to protect the client from conflicting and potentially dangerous treatments.

A referral is a formal request for a special service by another care provider so that the client can access the care identified by the primary care provider or consultant. Some examples of referrals include physical therapy, wound care, and hospice. The nursing intervention continues to evolve around monitoring the client’s response and progress.

Directions: There are three scenarios that will be used in this discussion posting. You are all responsible for the initial discussion posting and then responding to one posting in the remaining scenarios. For example, my last name is Combs, therefore my initial discussion posting will occur from CASE #1. I will then be responsible for responding to one post from CASE #2 and one post from CASE #3.

CASE #1 (A to H); CASE #2 (I to Q); CASE #3 (R to Z)

CASE #1:

30-year-old male presents to the emergency department with RLQ pain and fever. Labs reveal an elevated white blood count. The surgical intern tells the patient that appendicitis is suspected and that the plan is to proceed with surgery to remove the appendix. He explains that the surgery is to be performed to prevent complications of appendicitis, including abscess formation, sepsis or even death. He goes on to explain the risks of surgery, including bleeding, infection and damage to adjacent organs. What additional information needs to be included in this consent? Provide an evidence-based reason for your answer.

  1. Whether or not the intern would undergo the procedure in a similar circumstance.
  2. Alternative to the surgery, including receiving antibiotics and monitoring the patient.
  3. Name of the surgeon who will actually be performing the procedure.
  4. A, B and C
  5. B and C only

CASE #2:

33-year-old woman is in the operating room to undergo colectomy for ulcerative colitis. Patient was given appropriate information, and consented for the procedure. During the operation, a mass is identified involving the liver. Given the previous consent, it is acceptable for the surgeon to proceed further to either biopsy or excise the lesion. Provide an evidence-based reason for your answer.

  1. True
  2. False

CASE #3:

14-year-old girl presents to the emergency department, accompanied by her 10-month-old daughter and boyfriend. The boyfriend is the child’s father. Patient complains of severe lower abdominal pain, although she is afebrile, with normal laboratory values and normal vital signs. No cause of the pain is able to be delineated, and the plan is to take the girl to the operating room to perform a diagnostic laparoscopy. In this case, from whom should informed consent be obtained? Provide an evidence-based reason for your answer.

  1. Patient
  2. Patient’s parents
  3. Patient’s boyfriend

Analyzing Descriptive Statistics – 2025

As a practice scholar, you are searching for evidence to translate into practice. In your review of evidence, you locate a quantitative descriptive research study as possible evidence to support a practice change. You notice the sample of this study includes 200 participants and is not normally distributed. Reflect upon this scenario to address the following.

1-What statistical procedure is needed to determine an effective sample size to make a reasonable conclusion? Explain your rationale.

2-Reading through the study, you observe that the researcher used a chi-square analysis to analyze nominal and ordinal data. Is this the appropriate level of statistical analysis to answer the research question? Explain your rationale.

3-Reading further, the researcher reports that the p-level led her to conclude that the null hypothesis was rejected. In your critique of the study, you determine that the null hypothesis is true. Do these findings impact your decision about whether to use this evidence to inform practice change? Why or why not?

Hello I need answer each question separated and use 3 sources at least no later than 5 years

DW3- Trends In Healthcare Policy (Nursing) – 2025

Week 3 Discussion

TASK

Post your initial response to the topic below.

The ACA or the AHCA: Imperfect Solutions to Increasing Access to Health Care?

This week’s discussion focuses on the federal government’s role in protecting the public’s health using the ACA and current efforts to “repeal and replace” the ACA. Please note that the government’s role in protecting the public’s health did not begin with the ACA. In the late 1800s, Lilian Wald brought health care to the community. And in 1965, Congress passed bills authorizing Medicare and Medicaid. Since 1965, Congress has expanded government-sponsored health care to pregnant women and children.

Topic

·  Compare the current provisions in the ACA with those in the failed first version of the AHCA. S

·  Share your opinions about why the AHCA failed in the first attempt at passage.

As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format. Support your work, using your course lectures and textbook readings. Helpful APA guides and resources are available in the  University Online Library. Below are guides that are located in the library and can be accessed and downloaded via the University Online Citation Resources: APA Style page.
