As a group, identify a research or evidence-based article published within the last 5 years that focuses comprehensively on a specific intervention or new treatment tool for the management of diabetes in adults or children. The article must be relevant to nursing practice.

Create a 10-15 slide PowerPoint presentation on the study’s findings and how they can be used by nurses as an intervention. Include speaker notes for each slide and additional slides for the title page and references.

Include the following:

1. Describe the intervention or treatment tool and the specific patient population used in the study.
2. Summarize the main idea of the research findings for a specific patient population. The research presented must include clinical findings that are current, thorough, and relevant to diabetes and nursing practice.
3. Provide a descriptive and reflective discussion of how the new tool or intervention can be integrated into nursing practice. Provide evidence to support your discussion.
4. Explain why psychological, cultural, and spiritual aspects are important to consider for a patient who has been diagnosed with diabetes. Describe how support can be offered in these respective areas as part of a plan of care for the patient. Provide examples.

Learning styles represent the different approaches to learning based on preferences, weaknesses, and strengths. For learners to best achieve the desired educational outcome, learning styles must be considered when creating a plan. Complete “The VARK Questionnaire,” located on the VARK website, and then complete the following:

2. Describe your preferred learning strategies. Compare your current preferred learning strategies to the identified strategies for your preferred learning style.
3. Describe how individual learning styles affect the degree to which a learner can understand or perform educational activities. Discuss the importance of an educator identifying individual learning styles and preferences when working with learners.
4. Discuss why understanding the learning styles of individuals participating in health promotion is important to achieving the desired outcome. How do learning styles ultimately affect the possibility for a behavioral change? How would different learning styles be accommodated in health promotion?

Assessing and Planning Care for an Elderly Person

In order to gain an insight into the world of elder adults, it is important to understand how they view themselves and the values they hold. Additionally it is important to assess and determine his/her needs and establish appropriate interventions for this individual.

By the due date assigned, choose an older adult to interview. This cannot be a patient in your clinical setting. You can use a friend, family member, or co-worker. The older adult should be 65 years or older. Use the format provided to record the responses. A list of questions is available for you to start with. Include 2–3 questions of your own to get a complete picture of the older adult. Summarize your findings and also contrast the responses with findings in your readings and other current literature.

Download a patient questionnaire. This form should be used as an example.

After gaining permission, conduct a physical and mental functional assessment of the older adult you have chosen. Review your readings for the process of functional assessment.

Make use of the tools discussed this week to complete a comprehensive assessment of your patient. Search the Internet for resources on these tools.

Make sure the older adult is clearly identified on the tools. Do not include their name, but do include professional or other designation, and age. Your name should also be identified on the tool. (This should be a part of your Appendix.)

Compare and contrast the age-related changes of the older person you interviewed and assessed with those identified in this week’s reading assignment. During this data analysis process provide at least 4–6 preliminary issues that you have identified. Identify three alterations in health that you would propose and describe them. Identify a minimum of three comprehensive interventions for each problem.

Make sure that you integrate personal cultural awareness and cultural competency.

Paper should be 5–6 pages, not including the questionnaire or tools used. These should be attached as an Appendix. Remember to use headings to identify the different sections in your paper.

Question #2. Using Surveillance to Address a Practice Problem

Data mining is an important component of any population health outcome analysis. Select one of the following information hubs to address a health-related topic of your choice : CDC Surveillance Resource Center and Interactive Database Systems,  (Links to an external site.) World Health Organization (WHO) (Links to an external site.) or Our World in Data (Links to an external site.).  Analyze the data presented at the national and state levels to address the following.

·  Identify the information hub and topic selected. Provide a brief summary of the practice problem.

·  Compare and contrast national and state levels of data. Use the state of your residence as a basis for the comparison.

·  Describe how data from your home state compares to data from other states.

·  Identify one national organization or intervention related to your selected topic that is addressing the burden of this disease. Describe the impact of the organization or intervention to improve outcomes.

·  Share your professional experience related to the topic.

Registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) play a significant role in policy evaluation. Nurses represent the most substantial portion of the healthcare population (Milstead & Short, 2019). They possess the experience and expertise to positively affect quality improvement and efficiency when they are included as a member of policy and health care teams (Milstead & Short, 2019). RNs and APRNs can become involved in policy review on a local level, state level, or federal level (Milstead & Short, 2019). 

Members of the nursing profession can become involved in policy evaluation on a local level by joining a policy review committee at their place of employment. My current job offers incentives to Nurses that participate in the policy and procedures committees. RNs and APRNs can also become members of the policy board. This will allow them to evaluate policies and advocate for policy changes that improve the quality of care at their facility. Recently at my facility, a surge committee was assembled to redesign the surge policy and protocols. Multiple members of the healthcare team, including RNs and APRNs, participated and provided insight on working during a surge or sudden influx in patient flow. They were able to make suggestions that contributed to the new design for our surge policy at the facility. 

Another way RNs and APRNs can become involved in policy change on a large scale is to join an organization like the American Nurses Association (ANA). According to the ANA (2020), developing effective and useful policy is a core principle. Members of the ANA influence state and federal policymakers. The ANA provides expert information to lawmakers on policies (Milstead & Short, 2019). They assist with data collection and the evaluation of policies (Milstead & Short, 2019). According to Milstead and Short (2019), the process of policy evaluation is similar to the steps of the nursing process, making nurses a valuable asset to redesigning the healthcare system. Joining organizations like the ANA provides the opportunity for RNs and APRNs to lend their expertise to policy analysis. 

The cost will always be a challenge that must be considered when evaluating policy. Sometimes a solution that is recommended during the evaluation of a policy lands outside the budget. This is true on the local, state, and federal levels of policymaking. A cost-benefit analysis (CBA) can be conducted to overcome this challenge. A CBA compares the cost of a program or a policy with its benefits to select the most cost-effective and beneficial solution (Hwang, 2016). Some challenges that may occur when evaluating policy are out of the control of the evaluator, including the pace of policy change, issues with ethics, and political biases (Milstead & Short, 2019). For example, The ANA is known to support democratic candidates (Milstead & Short, 2019). This could decrease the value of the input provided by the ANA amongst policymakers that do not support the democratic agenda.
