Answer the Discussion Board board questions in paragraph form

Joan Leikvold was hired by Valley View Community Hospital as an operating room supervisor in 1972. She did not have a contract for a specific duration, nor was she told that the hospital would not discharge her except for cause. She was provided with a policy manual and told that the policies were to be followed in her employment relationship with the hospital. In 1978, she became the director of nursing. In October 1979, she requested a transfer back to her former position in the operating room. The chief executive officer (CEO) felt that it was inadvisable for someone who had been in a managerial position to take a subordinate position. Leikvold withdrew the transfer request but was subsequently fired. Her personnel record indicated “insubordination” as the reason for discharge. Leikvold was an at-will employee. At-will means that there is a contract made for an indefinite duration and either party, employer or employee, may terminate the contract at any time for any reason, or without reason, provided the reason is not discriminatory. Can the CEO fire Leikvold?

Chapter Overview

Because state and federal laws closely regulate medicine, students will need to know the laws and regulations that govern the practice of medicine and the procedures they are permitted to perform.

This chapter explains the many laws that students will encounter in the workplace. Discrimination is a prominent issue in the hiring and promotion of employees that your students will want to know about. This chapter also addresses sexual harassment, a serious problem in the workforce. Students will learn how the ADA regulates the hiring and promotion of physically and mentally disabled individuals; the FADA protects the rights of older workers; the Equal Pay Act prevents the practice of paying women less than men for the same job; the FLSA establishes a federal minimum wage, mandates extra pay for overtime work, and regulates the employment of children; the ERISA involves pensions; and, the OSHA affects health care workers, particularly with regulations involving right-to-know laws and blood-borne pathogens.

Other issues discussed in this chapter are workers’ compensation and social security, which affect every employer and employee. The chapter also explains that Medicare and Medicaid are government-sponsored health care delivery and compensation systems.

And, finally, this chapter makes clear that procedures manuals, job descriptions, and employee handbooks are all part of the business side of a medical practice, as are laws affecting collection procedures.

Within this group of disorders, some are resolvable with appropriate and timely interventions, either pharmacological or nonpharmacological, while other disorders are chronic and need to be managed throughout the lifespan.

For this Assignment, you will develop a study guide for an assigned disorder and share it with your colleagues. In sum, these study guides will be a powerful tool in preparing for your certification exam.

To Prepare

· Your Instructor will assign you to a specific neurodevelopmental disorder from the DSM-5.

· Research your assigned disorder using the Walden Library.

· Then, develop an organizational scheme for the important information about the disorder.

The Assignment

Create a study guide for your assigned disorder. Your study guide should be in the form of an outline with references, and you should incorporate visual elements such as concept maps, charts, diagrams, images, color coding, mnemonics, and/or flashcards. Nurses advocate for their patients in many ways and on a daily basis. Many do not realize that by providing care and communicating with patients, they are practicing advocacy. Ways the nurses advocate for patients include; through inter and intrapersonal communication, therapeutic communication, collaboration, socialization, implementation, networking with organizations (specifically those that move to influence legislative change), and identifying health care disparities and health care delivery Grand (Canyon University, 2018).

     We are all put in daily situations in which we advocate for our patients. One that jumps out to me, is a patient who came in as an outpatient and was status post op for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The patient came over from PACU into second phase recovery after over an hour and a half in the PACU. Bedside report revealed that the patient was thrashing upon arrival to PACU, pain was not manageable, and the patient’s blood pressure decreased while heart rate increased. The patient was still uncomfortable and thrashing around. I immediately contacted the physician who came to assess the patient. He stood there stating he didn’t know what was wrong or could be wrong with the patient. I, alongside my charge nurse, pushed for an order to draw a stat hemoglobin and hematocrit as I felt the patient was bleeding internally. It took convincing, but there were no further interventions we could do at this time to help this patient. When the H&H came back, it had dropped significantly compared to his preoperative levels the day before and below the norms. The patient was rushed back into the operating room where it was discovered he had ripped his internal stitches due to the thrashing around postoperatively. If it wasn’t for us advocating and pushing for the lab draw, the surgeon may have let the patient discharge where he would have bled a significant amount more. He could have potentially died. An Incident Report Form was completed on this situation.

Nursing organizations are the backbone of the profession. They advocate, and lobby to political leaders for change in policies and push for financial resources to carry out various plans and research. Most nursing organizations are specialized to a specific field, but they all have the common goal of promotion of wellness and providing healthcare to those in need when they need it. Speaking to my current role of a Medical Surgical nurse the organization of Academy of Medical surgical Nurses primary goal is to “focus on workplace advocacy; evidence-based practice, research and knowledge; professional development; national leadership and influence; and organizational health.” (AMSN Overview, 2019) Their vision is to have Medical-surgical nurses use their powerful voice and focused action to continuously improve patient care, and believe patients receive better care when medical-surgical nurses engage in ongoing professional development, use evidence-based practices, speak with a unified voice, serve as leaders on healthcare teams, have the necessary resources to deliver excellent care, and practice in a healthy practice environment. (AMSN Overview, 2019)

Nursing organizations have evolved to extensive levels of membership and with more than 3 million nurses these organizations have a massive resource for initiating change, with the largest organization being the American Nurses Association. “These organizations provide the opportunity for nursing as a profession to influence nursing practice, nursing education, health policy, and healthcare standards.” (Halstead, 2018) All nursing organizations advocate for patient care safety, continued education for nurses, allocating resources for those in need, and research with development of new policy.
