A long term study on the impact of TV on ADHD developmen was recently published.

Researchers in New Zealand found that kids who watched more than 2 hours of TV per day between ages 5 to 11 were significantly more likely to develop symptoms of attention deficit disorder (ADHD) than those who watched less.

“Those who watched more than two hours, and particularly those who watched more than three hours, of television per day during childhood had above-average symptoms of attention problems in adolescence,” Carl Landhuis of the University of Otago in Dunedin wrote in his report, published in the journal Pediatrics.

Young children who watched a lot of television were more likely to continue the habit as they got older, but even if they did not the damage was done, the report said.

“Hence, children who watch a lot of television may become less tolerant of slower-paced and more mundane tasks, such as school work,” the researchers wrote.

The most interesting part of the article was the possible explanations for why this relationship exists. The researchers thought (a) rapid scene changes influence brain development; and (b) television replaced other activities like reading — activities that require attention development.

 

The Assignment

What was the specific intervention that was used? Is this a new intervention or one that was already used?

What were the author’s claims?

Explain the findings/outcomes of the study in the article. Include whether this will translate into practice with your own clients. If so, how? If not, why?

Explain whether the limitations of the study might impact your ability to use the findings/outcomes presented in the article. Support your position with evidence-based literature.

Note: The presentation should be 5–10 slides, not including the title and reference slides. Include presenter notes (no more than ½ page per slide) and use tables and/or diagrams where appropriate. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from the article you selected. Support your approach with evidence-based literature with at least three to five references no more five years old.

 In order for organizations to receive the incentives offered through the HITECH legislation, they must be able to demonstrate that they are using the technology in meaningful ways. The following criteria for meaningful use must be evident to qualify for EHR incentives (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2012). The technology must:

• Improve quality, safety, and efficiency, and reduce health disparities
• Engage patients and families
• Improve care coordination
• Improve population and public health
• Ensure adequate privacy and security protections for personal health information

For this Discussion you consider the impact of the meaningful use criteria of the HITECH legislation on the adoption of health information technology.

To prepare:

• Review the Learning Resources on the HITECH legislation and its primary goals.
• Reflect on the positive and negative impact this legislation has had on your organization or one with which you are familiar.
• Consider the incentives to encourage the use of EHRs. Focus on the definition of meaningful use and how it is measured.
• Reflect on how the incentives and meaningful use impact the quality of patient care.
• Find an article in the Walden Library dealing with one of the criteria to qualify for meaningful use and how it has been successfully met.

Post a description of how HITECH legislation has positively or negatively impacted your organization. Address how its related incentives influence the adoption of health information technology in health care and impact the quality of patient care. Provide a summary of the article you identified and explain how it demonstrates the ability of health information technology to meet the requirements of meaningful use.

  

Brainstorming Solutions to Hospital Mistakes

Your instructor was invited to give an opinion as a patient advocate at a retreat organized by agencies of the federal government, such as the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Office of Health and Human Resources. The topic was a Partnership for Patients. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) showed the data on hospital survey measures. The data showed that significant progress was made in the last four years and that more and more hospitals are achieving higher scores.

The instructor asked a simple question, “If there is so much progress made in critical hospital measures, then why is the number of patients dying from hospital mistakes significantly going up every year?” The estimated deaths in 2010 were 99,000 deaths. The 2016 estimate is about 440,000 deaths.

In this discussion, explain the reasons you think there are more deaths in spite of the significant progress in hospital performance measures. Then, provide one remedy or solution. At Minimum 250 Words APA format. Include two references to support your opinions.
