I believe that the more we improve our knowledge as professionals, the more we may help our patient reach optimal health. Within, proper training or educating ourselves through clinical research. Promoting evidence-based practice is obtained by utilizing different strategies within deferent organizations.

It is known to be an important tool for nurses to enhance patient care. For example, proper hand washing technique was initially researched, processed, and evaluated to later become an established protocol in the healthcare field. Decades ago, there was no evidence shown of the time needed to be taken to wash hands properly and kill bacteria.

Nurses should research electronic resources available. However, some of the common site pages would be National library of medicine, Cochrane Library, or National Guideline Clearinghouse. These are webpages provide the most recent evidence for practice within guidelines.

In this model, the stages of knowledge transfer are viewed from the perspective of the researcher or the creator of new knowledge and begin with decisions about which research findings ought to be disseminated (Titler, 2008).

            The strategies may be different, but the goal is the same. Each model presents differently now the nurse must choose which model best suits the organization representing. Everyone’s needs are distinct, its our responsibility to identify that need and choose the correct change needed for the best outcome.

Conclusively, as described by Masters, “The evidence-based practice process enhances practice by encouraging reflection about what we know; it is applicable to virtually every area of nursing practice including patient assessment, diagnosis of the patient problems, planning, patient care interventions, and evaluation of patient responses” (Masters, 2017). The rigor associated with research differs between qualitative and quantitative research. In quantitative research a study is rigorous when it is reliable and valid. The researcher must maintain adherence to the procedure during data collection and analysis (Lohfield, 2018). Reliability is the degree to which a research instrument produces consistent results. There are a few different methods to test reliability. Stability reliability is tested using test-retest, where the same concept is is tested with the same instrument over time to see if it yields the same results. Equivalence reliability is tested by inter-rater reliability, which is when two people judge their equvalence, and alternate forms, which is a comparison of two instruments to determine their equivalence. Internal consistency is mainly used with scales as a meausuring concept.  Validity is how accurate an instrument is at measuring what it is trying to measure. There are four types of validity. Face validity is just looking at the instrument to determine if it looks legitamate. Content validity looks to see if the method has all of the main components ncessary to measure whatever is being measured. Construct validity determines whether the instrument measures the theoretical component it is meant to measure. Criterion related validity is used when a score on a test can be used to predict the persons performance in a different situation.

In qualitative research, maintatining trustworthiness is key to a rigorous study. Trustworthiness is the analogous for rigor in qualitative research (Amankwaa, 2016). Trustowrthiness involves establishing credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. the researcher must also have self awareness, because qualitative research involves interpreting findings, and this may be affected by a researchers biases.

To ensure trustworthiness, I think a researcher having a lot of knowledge of themselves and being aware of this when interpreting data would be key to keep their study rigorous. to increase validity, a researcher should make sure they have a very good research tool. To increase reliability, it is best to use a large sample size in the study.

I frequently ask the co-workers for advice on what has worked for them in their units and how they have found success; this networking has been so helpful in the career. Another big part of personal affiliations and networking is own involvement in professional organizations. This current information and idea sharing can have a significant impact on and manager. I joined the ENA (Emergency Nurse Association) when I was still a bedside nurse and have continued my membership into my career as a director; I find that it is an excellent resource for idea sharing. There is so much evidence-based practice that is available through the ENA, and found that extremely helpful and saw it continue to benefit in the career in the future. 

Another professional organization that I became a member is Association of California nursing Leaders, ACNL. Through them, went to the conference of nursing students, where issues essential to nursing students such as LGBT and gender rights and allocation of help to drug users. Living in Los Angeles area for a while, I gave speeches there for the national nursing community on the importance of the issues. Even after many speeches and voting, the audience showed divisions on the issue. 

Leadership networks provide information, networking, and professional development for nursing school faculty and staff. The Networks bring peer professionals together to share best practices and success stories, sharpen leadership skills, and take full advantage of multiple resources (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014). Professionals who are engaged in a variety of functions within the nursing are in tune with networks across nursing. There has been a massive push in the workplace organization for nurses to get involved and enrich themselves as professionals.

Another situation where we have networked for the community’s benefit happens every year, the unit as a whole raises money in order to benefit the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk. We do a bake sale by the cafeteria in our hospital, we do a beef and beer at a local bar, and we raise money in other ways as well. It is always very beneficial to give back to the community and it also makes connections with others that you wouldn’t expect.
