Hello to all of my classmates and professor.  My name is Brent Braswell.  After serving in the US Air Force for almost a decade, I decided to become a nurse.  I started as a LVN (LPN) and a year later I went back for my RN.  I tried hospital nursing and while the acute experience is very valuable, I simply was not happy.  I soon found myself trying other things such as hospice and even the county jail, yet I could still not find that happy place I was searching for.  Then I discovered geriatrics and there was the icing on my cake! I absolutely found my calling in long term care and rehabilitation.  After a short time working as a floor nurse I was asked to fill in for the director of nursing while they were out on a family emergency.  After that I was addicted and have been a director of nursing for skilled facilities ever since and I have no regrets.  It has been amazing and while many times my frustration with the system can grow, I always know in my heart that geriatrics is my passion.

Leadership Style

                My leadership style is hard for me as I vary from one to another depending on the situation.  Predominantly I would have to choose democratic leadership as my primary choice.  A democratic leader encourages participation and exchange of ideas from her/his team regarding the directions the team should take and what actions they should prioritize. When faced with a complex problem, she/he will elicit ideas from others, listen attentively and build consensus, but may put off making difficult decisions (Chapman, Johnson, & Kilner, 2016).

Evidence

It is very important to me that I always include my staff in decision making. I am the boss, but that does not mean that I know everything or that I think of all possibilities.  Encouraging my staff to speak up and pass along their ideas brings about camaraderie and trust with each other. I also believe in autonomy. I have three assistants that are called unit managers. Until they were to give me a reason to micromanage their jobs, I simply will not. This allows me to show that I trust their judgment and knowledge.  The nurses who work the floor are full of ideas concerning the specific needs of their patients. I do not take care of these patients all day, so why on earth would I not ask their opinion when an issue arises? When there is a change in regulations it is my job to know and understand the details of that change and how it may impact daily routines. It is also my job to explain it to the staff so that they understand. At that point I will have already formed ideas of how to make it work, but I still call a meeting with my staff to teach the change and to share ideas of the best way to implement the change.

A critical skill for all nurse managers is the ability to create, develop, and lead effective teams. When people are part of an effective and well-functioning team, they are more productive and have a stronger commitment to the organization. Nurse managers have a responsibility to create teams that fulfill functional needs within their units or departments. These can include leadership teams, ad hoc project teams, or primary work teams.

As a nurse manager, there is a variety of ways that you can enhance team functioning. The first step is developing the structural elements of the team and then designing the team with the appropriate membership. Just as you must critically examine each application during the employment process, so will you critically examine the skills and attributes of each employee before appointing him or her to a collective team.

In this week’s Discussion, you lay the groundwork for creating and developing a team for your unit, department, or health care setting. You also identify leadership strategies that you could employ to increase the team’s organizational effectiveness.

To prepare

  • Review Chapter 5, “The Art of Effectively Facilitating Processes” from the course text, From Management to Leadership: Strategies for Transforming Health Care. Carefully examine the section, “Essential Elements of a Team” to identify the six steps of creating an effective team.
  • Consider a team you might create for your current organization or one with which you are familiar. For example, is there a project to be accomplished or a problem to be solved? Perhaps there is a need for a leadership team within your unit or department?
  • Identify the purpose or goal for your team. Then, reflect on the following questions:
    • What type of team would you create (leadership, ad hoc, or primary work team) to accomplish this purpose or goal? What are the benefits or disadvantages of creating this type of team?
    • What staff members would you want on this team? Why? How could their skill sets and positions make them effective team members?
  • Explore this week’s Learning Resources to identify leadership strategies you might employ before, during, and after the team-building phase. For example, what leadership strategies might influence synergy among team members while also increasing the effectiveness of the team?

Post a description of the team you would create, including the purpose or goal the team would serve, the team type, and the specific skills each member would contribute as well as their job positions. Describe at least two leadership strategies you could implement to help this team effectively achieve its purpose or goal.

Overview: 

As the above quotes from famous writers explain, successful writers are successful revisers. Writing courses often don’t build in time to allow for revision, leaving the false impression that effective writing can actually happen in a few days or weeks. Thus, your final and major project of this course asks you to take all that you have learned about writing processes, composing, and research in order to revise your researched argument.  You may use writing you produced in your first draft, but if the paper does not change significantly, then your essay grade will be lowered. Your goal for this paper should be to improve your argument and to improve your presentation (tone, sentence structure, organization) of that argument. This paper should be a minimum of eight pages and use a minimum of eight sources (five of which have to be academic/government). 

What is revision? Revision involves making global changes to your writing. It involves deleting, moving, and rewriting large parts (if not all) of your previous drafts. It often means doing new research, finding new ways to discuss your topic, and even starting fresh—only pulling words from your first draft when absolutely necessary (and even then those words might need to change). Revising is not the same as editing and proofreading. Editing and proofreading focus on sentences, words, and correctness. Revision focuses on making meaning and on the overall organization and development of your argument.

This is the culmination of all of our work this term and is worth 35% of the semester grade.

The Process: 

This assignment is going to ask you to complete a number of steps in order to improve your essay. 

  1. Create a reverse outline of your argument. 
  2. Create a revision plan and meet with your instructor to discuss it. 
  3. Do new research. Find new sources to support your argument (the reverse outline should help you identify the type of research you need to do in order to support your claims). 
  4. Rewrite and revise! 
  5. Edit and proofread. 

Requirements: 

  • Eight to ten full pages (excluding works cited)
  • Must include eight sources, of which five must be academic or government sources 
  • MLA format
