Memory, Cognition, and Cognitive NeuroscienceDuring the late 1960s and early 1970s, cognitive psychology researchers conducted studies that offered new information about how memory is stored and processed. Findings suggested that memory is first encoded based on sensory data from the environment (sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell), moved to short-term memory, where it can be easily retrieved, and, when rehearsed (i.e., repeated thinking about the memory), moved to long-term memory, where it is stored and can be retrieved at a later date (Atkinson & Shiffrin, 1968; Craik & Lockhart, 1972).The basic structural information about memory that arose from these early studies, along with the emergence of brain imaging technology, has led to major advancements in our understanding of cognition and cognitive neuroscience. For example, there is a body of literature on the association between PTSD and memory dysfunction. Traumatic memories are thought to be encoded differently than other memories, which helps explain symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety. In addition, experiencing a traumatic event and then consistently reliving it through flashbacks and nightmares can damage the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for memory encoding, leading to deficits in short-term memory (Hays, VanElzakker, & Shin, 2012; MacIntosh & Whiffen, 2005). Fortunately, exciting new research on neuroplasticity suggests that the brain is malleable and that it is possible to reverse the damage to certain parts of the brain (Kays, Hurley, & Taber, 2012).In this discussion, you will examine other studies on memory and consider how the findings contribute to our understanding of cognition and cognitive neuroscience.Atkinson, R. Stranger from Another Planet! For this forum, I want you to pick one part of the female sexual or reproductive anatomy (internal or external) that you find particularly interesting/fascinating/enlightening. Pretend you have the job of explaining this part to a stranger from another planet who has no familiarity with human beings, much less our sexual anatomy. Using correct scientific terminology and proper writing style, I want you to include in your post the name of the part you picked and explain the following:1) Where it is (use details like internal/external; posterior (back)/anterior (front);2) Relative Size (golf ball? Pear? Pencil Eraser?)3) What is the analogous (comparable) part in a male’s body (for example, ovarytesticle)4) Does it appear to have nerve endings and, if so, how many (approximate);5) Name 2-3 functions of the part you picked (Reproductive? Pleasure? Protective? All of the above? You don’t have to use the options I just listed — I am just giving you ideas…)6) What do YOU find particularly interesting/fascinating/enlightening about this part of a woman’s body? (Use intelligent, formal language, not slang or informal language).7) Anything else you think your stranger from another planet should know about this part???Keep in mind, your explanation should be accurate and thorough, but be written in an understandable way. Have fun!

Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences. | 2025 Custom Writing

The accuracy of the results of research data is partially dependant on the sample that was used in the research study. How large the sample, its specific characteristics, and how it was selected, all play a significant role in how “good” the research results will be. Without appropriate sample size, characteristics, and selection, the results will be less than optimal. To this point, forensic psychology professionals often use existing databases from which to draw the data for their research; that is, they obtain their sample from these data bases. The problem with doing this is that the researcher does not have input into the sample represented in the data, such as how and from whom it was collected. To prepare for this assignment:Review Chapter 6 in your course text, Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences. Pay particular attention to when and where surveys are used in forensic research and the importance of representative sampling.Review the selected pages of Appendix B in your course text, Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences. Pay close attention to the role of sample size in applying results to the general population.Using the Walden Library, select a forensic psychology research article that interests you. As you review it, focus on the section(s) discussing methods and results.Consider how the sample size, sample characteristics, and means of sample selection influenced the results of the study. The assignment (1–3 pages):Briefly summarize the forensic psychology research article you selected, including the sections on methods and results, paying particular attention to sample size, characteristics, and means of selection.Explain how the sample size, sample characteristics, and sample selection influenced the results of the study and why.

Observational Studies and Coding | 2025 Custom Writing

In Chapter 7, you read about naturalistic research methods. This type of research is designed to help the researcher understand behavior in the setting in which it occurs naturally, rather than in a laboratory or other controlled setting. Naturalistic research is appealing because it simulates reality. However, it is challenging because the researcher has limited control over the participants and the settings.Observational research is one of the common types of naturalistic designs. As a researcher, you might hide your identity and blend in with the natural environment. In this case, you would be an unacknowledged observer in the study. When appropriate, you also may let participants know, usually after you have conducted your observations, about the study and reveal your identity. In this case, you would be an acknowledged observer in the study. In both cases, it is a challenge to measure and record the behavior you are studying because the participants are usually moving constantly, and/or are scattered about, thus making it difficult to record every behavioral occurrence under observation. Since you are observing behavior and not using surveys or other means to collect data from your participants, you need to clearly identify the behavior you are studying and use a coding sheet to track the observed behavior. In this Discussion, you develop an idea for a hypothetical observational study and create a coding sheet you could use to record your observations. To prepare:Read Chapter 7 in your course text.Review the coding form example in Figure 7.1 on page 138 of your course text.Choose a setting where you would enjoy observing behavior. It might be someplace you go everyday (like the grocery store) or it might be a place you would like to go (such as a city park).Create a coding form for a hypothetical observational study of the setting your selected. Use the coding sheet in the course text as an example, but create something that is entirely your own. Note: This is a hypothetical study. You are creating a coding form but not conducting the actual observation study (because you would need to obtain IRB approval first).Prepare to upload your coding form as an attachment (in .doc or .rtf format) to your posting. With these thoughts in mind:By Day 3The topic of your hypothetical observational study. This should also be in the “Subject” field of your post this week (e.g., Child Playground Behavior). In the main body of your post, provide background information on your hypothetical observational study, including the setting, why you are interested in this study, and what you hope to learn.Explain whether you would be an acknowledged or unacknowledged observer and why.Describe the types of behavior and the episodes you included on your coding form.Upload the coding form you created as an attached document (.doc or .rtf format).
