Dominant and Subordinate Group MembershipThis week you are exploring what it means to have privilege in all aspects of life, whether it be that you are able to enroll in school and take this course, or that you are able to walk, type, see, taste, or purchase/have access to groceries. Having privilege also means that you have power of some sort. Even having access to goods and services can be seen as a privilege. Discrimination can accompany power and privilege as those who have power and privilege may not be consciously aware of how they benefit from it.Instructions:First, Chapter 4 of The Ecology of Diversity (Kahn, 2015) has a “Reflections on Diversity” section near the end entitled, “Membership in Dominant and Subordinate Groups.” Follow the instructions provided in the chapter and complete the chart considering who are you are and what relationships you have with each type of group.Second, write at least three paragraphs (300 words) addressing the following questions:How has privilege, in any/all forms, shaped your life? Consider race, socioeconomic status, education, and other associations identified in Week 1.Have you been aware of the privileges in your life as you were growing up? Why or why not?As you learn more about privilege, and as you examine your life, what do you find most interesting or surprising? How has privilege shaped your life opportunities, life chances, experiences, etc.?Post your discussion by Day 3 of the week. Before beginning, carefully review the Writing Center’s guide Writing a Good Discussion Board Post (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..Initial Post Checklist:Did you use scholarly resources to support your work?Did you discuss each area in the instruction and Grading Rubric?Did you use APA?

Answers must be paraphrased (restated in your own words with no quoting permitted), properly source credited, using APA formatting requirements – including within-answer citations and a list of references included at the end of each answer – and at least 600 words each, not counting source citations and references. Answers should be succinct, thorough, articulated in well-organized paragraphs (lists, sentence fragments and bulleted items are not permitted), and more substantive than just definitions of terms, procedures, or issues. To complete this exam, save a copy of it on your hard drive, construct your answers below each question on a separate page per question, attach a cover page to the front and a reference list to the end .Questions:Psychological abnormality may include deviance,      distress, dysfunction, and danger. First, briefly explain what each term means in this context. Then, foreachterm, provide a      specific example of when it (e.g., distress) would be considered “normal”      and, separately, an example of when it would be considered      “abnormal”. Last, explain why is it      important to understand this distinction.Your nephew is taking Intro to Psych as a high school      senior and is confused about which of the models is “best” at explaining      abnormality. Describe for him, in no      more than 100 words per model and using terms he (as a layperson) can      understand, the six major theoretical models of abnormality AND the  biopsychosocial model. Then, brieflyanswer his question – which model do you think is best and why? Be sure to support your answer.Answer both parts of this question. Imagine you are an intake clinician at a      community mental health clinic:If you had 30 minutes to conduct a preliminary       clinical interview, what information would you be sure to try to get, and       why? Be sure to support your       answer using the text. You’ve been tasked to give a lecture to new clients       explaining the format and major characteristics of DSM-5. What are the main points you want to be       sure to cover? For EACH of the following disorders, characterizethreespecific factors you believe aremostimportant for a basic      understanding of them. Be sure to      justify your choices using only about 100-150 words for each:Generalized Anxiety DisorderPanic DisorderObsessive Compulsive DisorderPost-Traumatic Stress DisorderSomatic Symptom DisorderDissociative Identity DisorderMajor Depressive DisorderBipolar DisorderCompare and contrast each of Shneidman’s categories      of suicide and discuss their implications for prevention and post-vention      efforts.

Apply the scientific method to the information included within the scenario and develop a null and a research hypothesis based on it.Applying the scientific method to develop a research hypothesis is an important step in the experimental design process. Prior to developing a hypothesis, first a question must be developed. Research question: What is the effect of incentives on students’ motivation to respond to posts? When a null hypothesis exists, the researcher is trying to discredit that there is not a statistical difference between the two variables stated in the hypothesis. Based on the scenario, my null hypothesis would be: incentives will not increase the number of online psychology students’ responses to posts. In addition, my research hypothesis would be: incentives will increase the number of online psychology students’ responses to posts.Using the hypotheses you have developed, compare the characteristics of the different experimental research designs discussed in the Skidmore (2008) article and choose the one that is most appropriate to adequately test your hypotheses.Skidmore (2008) discusses three various experimental research designs including: Pretest-Posttest-Only Control Group Design, Posttest-Only Control Group Design, and Solomon-Four Group Design. In the Pretest-Posttest-Only Control Group Design, participants are randomly assigned to two different groups. The experimental group receives incentives or assignments while the control group receives a different incentive or no incentive at all. A pretest occurs prior to implementing the incentive and then a measurement after the incentive is assigned is then conducted. Posttest-Only Control Group Design differs in that a pretest measurement does not exist, only a posttest to measure the incentive that has been applied however, all other characteristics are similar. Finally, the Solomon-Four Group Design contains all the characteristics of a Pretest-Posttest-Only Control Group Design, however, allows results to be compared amongst four groups with varying experiences. Thus, this design is considered to be the most powerful (Skidmore, 2018). Although this design is considered to be the most powerful amongst all the designs, it is complex, which can create challenges. All of these are considered true experiments.Since the sample size is only 45 students, number of participants may not be large enough to conduct the Solomon-Four Group Design. Therefore, I would implement the Pretest-Posttest-Only Control Group Design test the hypothesis as the results. The design uses a pretest to measure prior to implementing the incentive thus it can be evaluated when incentives are implemented and not implemented after participating in a pretest. Finally, a post test can measure students’ responses and all the data can be compared.Identify potential internal threats to validity and explain how you might mitigate these threats.Internal threats are factors that may impact the ability for researchers to make conclusions about the study.  According to Skidmore (2018) ensuring that the independent variable caused the dependent variable may be concerning. Potential concerns include: bias or not using a randomized selection of participants, unclear about which variable occurred first, factors impacting the results, natural occurring changes, varying scores, participants not completing the entire study, influence of the testing on the results, changes that may have occurred, and the selection of participants may impact each group (Skidmore, 2018). In order to overcome these potential threats, it is important to examine if validity was noticed and decreased. Administering standardized tests or procedures may decrease the threat of instrumentation. Extreme test scores should not be the basis for assigning participants. A lengthy study could cause participants to dropout, so aiming to keep the study shorter may avoid this concern. Finally, randomizing participants and assignment to various groups when possible would also assist in avoiding internal threats.Apply ethical principles to the proposed research and describe the implications of this type of research in terms of the population(s) and cultural consideration(s) represented in the sample(s) within the scenario.According to Henrich, Heine & Norenzayan (2010) it is the responsibility of researchers to realize the differences amongst populations in order to refrain from bias as well as economic factors related to financial conclusions and anticipating certain outcomes. As with any study, researchers must uphold ethical standards and attempt to reduce harm, receive informed consent, and receive approval for the study. Researchers must be aware of cultural differences and respect diversity amongst participants. An online environment and virtual students, as discussed in the scenario, may encounter different challenges than a classroom environment where students are present. Thus, it is important for researchers to be aware of a virtual environment and respect diversity amongst students.ReferencesHenrich, J., Heine, S. J., & Norenzayan, A. (2010).Most people are not WEIRD. Nature, 466(7302), 29. doi: 10.1038/466029aSkidmore, S. CRB | 2025 Custom Writing

Students will write a 1,000 word CRB based on one of the following three prompts. This assignment is worth 100 points. The CBR is a required assignment. A student cannot pass the class without submitting a CBR. (100 points total)Option1: Ford, E. (2017). Sometimes amazing things happen: Heartbreak and hope on the Bellevue Hospital psychiatric prison ward. Regan Arts. Dr. Ford is a compassionate psychiatrist and dedicated to the care of her patients who are also incarcerated for a wide range of crimes. At times, it seems her patients’ needs take priority over her marriage and child. Prompt: Does Dr. Ford care too much? Does she suffer from compassion fatigue?Option 2: Lessing, D. (1988). The fifth child. Jonathan Cape. It’s the traditional story: boy meets girl, they fall in love, marry and plan to fill up their large home with a brood of children. David will commute to London for work, and Harriet will stay at home to raise their children. All is going to plan until Harriet becomes pregnant with Ben, their fifth child. The pregnancy is a horrible ordeal for Harriet, and it is at this time she knows there isn’t something right about Ben. Things do not improve after his birth. Ben brings about a miserable suffering for the entire family. Prompt: Are Ben’s behavioral challenges the result of nature or nurture?Option 3: Lipska, B. A. & McArdle, E. (2019). The neuroscientist who lost her mind: My tale of madness and recovery. Mariner Books. As a deadly cancer spreads inside her brain, neuroscientist Barbara Lipska was plunged into madness—only to miraculously survive with her memories intact. In the tradition of My Stroke of Insight and Brain on Fire, this powerful memoir recounts her ordeal and explains its unforgettable lessons about the brain and mind. —Amazon Book Review Prompt: Dr. Lipska seems to be suggesting her experience of “losing her mind” may be of some value as a neuroscientist who also happens to research the brain. Do you agree? Your essay needs to address the idea of “objectivity” for researchers and the possible risks of infusing too much empathy.*The campus bookstore can assist with ordering hard copies of these titles.
