PICOT Question and Literature Search

The first step of the evidence-based practice process is to evaluate a nursing practice environment to identify a nursing problem in the clinical area. When a nursing problem is discovered, the nurse researcher develops a clinical guiding question to address that nursing practice problem.

For this assignment, you will create a clinical guiding question know as a PICOT question. The PICOT question must be relevant to a nursing practice problem. To support your PICOT question, identify six supporting peer-revised research articles, as indicated below. The PICOT question and six peer-reviewed research articles you choose will be utilized for subsequent assignments.

Use the “Literature Evaluation Table” to complete this assignment.

1. Select a nursing practice problem of interest to use as the focus of your research. Start with the patient population and identify a clinical problem or issue that arises from the patient population. In 200–250 words, provide a summary of the clinical issue.
2. Following the PICOT format, write a PICOT question in your selected nursing practice problem area of interest. The PICOT question should be applicable to your proposed capstone project (the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study).
3. The PICOT question will provide a framework for your capstone project.
4. Conduct a literature search to locate six research articles focused on your selected nursing practice problem of interest. This literature search should include three quantitative and three qualitative peer-reviewed research articles to support your nursing practice problem.

Note: To assist in your search, remove the words qualitative and quantitative and include words that narrow or broaden your main topic. For example: Search for diabetes and pediatric and dialysis. To determine what research design was used in the articles the search produced, review the abstract and the methods section of the article. The author will provide a description of data collection using qualitative or quantitative methods. Systematic Reviews, Literature Reviews, and Metanalysis articles are good resources and provide a strong level of evidence but are not considered primary research articles.  Therefore, they should not be included in this assignment.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. 

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Using “Home Visit With Sallie Mae Fisher” and “Sallie Mae Fisher’s Health History and Discharge Orders,” complete the following components of this assignment:

Essay Portion

After viewing the home visit, write an essay of 500-750-words in which you do the following:

1. Identify, prioritize, and describe at least four problems.
2. Provide substantiating evidence (assessment data) for each problem identified.
3. Identify and describe at least four medical and/or nursing interventions.
4. Discuss your rationale for the interventions identified.

Prepare this step of the assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Scripted Dialogue Portion

Utilizing the information learned from the home visit, health histories, and discharge orders, write a scripted dialogue in which you provide Sallie Mae with education that describes her problems and the interventions identified to improve her condition. Consider Sallie Mae’s physiological, psychosocial, educational, and spiritual needs when developing your dialogue.

Your dialogue should resemble a script. The following is an example of a few sentences from a scripted dialogue:

Nurse: “Good morning, Salle Mae, my name is ______ and I will be your nurse today. I understand you are experiencing problems with ________.”

APA format is not required for this part of the assignment, but solid academic writing is expected.

Week 2: PICOT/PICo and Practice Questions

• Using the area of interest from Week 1, identify the following.
  • Will you be using a quantitative or qualitative approach for your EBP project proposal?
  • Explain why this approach is the best one to provide information for your area of interest.
  • Create a PICOT/PICo question using the PICOT/PICo format for quantitative and PICo for qualitative approaches.
  • Identify your practice question, being sure to include the following.
    • For a quantitative approach
      • A questioning part such as “what is,” “what are,” “is there,” or “are there”
      • Population being studied
      • Variables being studied
      • Suggestion of the relationship between variables
    • For a qualitative approach
      • Phenomenon or concept of interest
      • Group or population of interest
      • Suggestion of which qualitative research design is being used

Choose either quantitative or qualitative- only the proposed approach needs to be addressed.

1. Select a bill that is currently in the State or Federal Legislature related to nursing or health care.  Give your reasons for selecting this bill including its importance to you personally and its significance to nursing and health care.

2. Describe the significance to nursing and health care.

3. Identify the bill by its title, number and sponsor(s).

4. Obtain a copy of the bill to study and to include with your report.  (New Jersey Bills may be obtained from NJ Legislative Services 1-800-792-8630 or www.njleg.state.nj.us, or through internet sites.)

5. Identify the party affiliation of the sponsor(s) of the bill.

6. Determine the position of nursing and/or other organizations regarding this bill.   (e.g., NJSNA, ANA, NANP, NAPNAP, AONE, New Jersey Medical Society)

7. Do a literature review on the issue(s) related to the bill.

8. State your position on the bill. 

9. Defend your position with your reasons.  Substantiate.

10. Appropriately cite your sources of information.  Approximately 10 references from authoritative sources such as peer-reviewed journal articles or government agency reports should be used to support your position on the bill.

11. Contact your legislative representative(s) regarding your position on this bill; e.g. by writing letters/emails*, making phone calls, participating in related social media, or meetings with the legislator or staff member in his/her local office.

12. Identify other political strategies you used to oppose/support bill.

13. Evaluate the effectiveness of your lobbying efforts and strategies.

14. Write appropriate letters/emails/responses of appreciation, if response received from legislator.

15. Include copies of the bill, your letters and responses with your paper.  They should be added to the end of the paper like an appendix.

16. Use APA style manual. 

17. The body of the paper (not including title page and reference) should be 6-9 pages in length, double-spaced and attached to the appropriate space in the Assignment section of Blackboard where they will be submitted to Safe Assignment to ensure that the work is original.
