Learning is the process of taking in new information and applying it to a situation or demonstrating it to others.  The ability to learn is possessed by humans, and animals; some learning is immediate, and at times a single event can induce something will never forget (e.g. being burned by a hot stove), but much skill and knowledge accumulates from repeated experiences.  My presentation will utilize more than one way of learning, I will have video, audio; from my power point slide, handouts, pictures, and demonstration activities.  The handout will be in English and Spanish, the power point slide will be shown slowly and interpreted by my selected leader to state what I say in Spanish.  

            During the past few weeks, I have interviewed several people from different age groups and received some feed back on their level of understanding.  I will make sure my handouts and infographics are very simple and not overly crowded.  Upon setting my tables up for my audience, I am going to make sure the groups are mixed amongst age group.  All ages at each table, not allowing all teens at one table or all adults; etc.  Women, men, and young adults at each table is my goal to establish a more conducive learning environment.   

            Having my handouts in simple colorful form, will grasps my audience attention; but more importantly having it in the language they understand best is going to be more productive and increase my chances of delivering my message effectively.  I am going to show pictures of the more commonly used blood pressure medication and show them where they can research and learn about the blood pressure pills, they are prescribed.  I will work on decreasing the use of Google to find out about hypertension and blood pressure medications; by giving them medical website that are designed by medical physicians.

            One of my goals, that I am still working on; is the importance of investing in a blood pressure monitor, if they can afford one.  I will also give them a list of stores that usually have a blood pressure station, such as Walmart and CVS.  I am going to also discuss with the apartment manager the possibility of keeping a blood pressure monitor in the office where residents and come in and utilize it to take their blood pressure on site.  Anyone that gets an extremely high reading, will be encouraged to come next door to the hospital.

This is very delicate part of the project because there many variables. People learn in a variety of different ways and situations. It is important to keep in mind that in order to reach the majority of people in the community it is good to try to be respectful and understanding to everyone’s needs. When preparing my presentation, I will take into consideration my audience. My audience will predominately be younger individuals. The presentation should be focused with that in mind. Young people will have different focuses in relation to older adults. Adolescents have different reasons for drug use from adults. Adolescents will often try drugs in a social situation. They feel pressured to do something they normally would not do. Friends that are often using drugs and want to be like them. Adults on the other hand use drugs to deal with stress or anxiety. Another reason Adults use is to deal with chronic pain. What ever their incentive for using drugs, it is unhealthy and dangerous. What is needed is education. They need to understand what these substances are doing to their body’s and how they can get help. In order to get the message to them delivery of the information must be interesting and pertinent to the audience. The presentation should be given in a way that all can understand the underlying meaning of what is being talked about. Content must be appropriate for the listening audience.

Another important factor in the presentation is to maintain interest. Time plays a big point of presentations. Having the presentation last for a long time presents a risk of effectiveness and success (Wellstead, Whitehurst, Gundogan & Agha, 2017). It is also important to have the audience interact during the presentation. This ensures that material is being heard and allows for response from those present.  The presenter should attempt to maintain eye contact with the group. The presenter should have attractive visual aids. It is helpful that speaker use different voice techniques to maintain interest in the topic. It is always a good idea to finish with a recap and clarify information previously discussed. Finally, asking if there are any questions is always a good idea to have handouts and pamphlets. These will summarize the main points of the presentation. It will also serve as reference material. Names of treatment centers and counseling opportunities will be available at a quick glance.  This information can be helpful to the user, family or friends.

Hypertension, high cholesterol and triglycerides, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea are actual health risks that Mr. C. has. He is also at risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and death as a result of his obesity as well (Cleveland Clinic, 2018).

~Is bariatric surgery an appropriate intervention? Why or why not?

At 68 in. and 134.5 kg Mr. C. has a BMI of 47.8. According to the Cleveland Clinic a BMI greater than 40, and negative health effects such as hypertension, diabetes as a direct result of this morbid obesity, makes you an ideal candidate for bariatric surgery (2018). As Mr. C. has many of these negative health effects it would be appropriate for him to have the gastric surgery.

Mr. C. has been diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease and the following medications have been ordered:

Magnesium hydroxide/aluminum hydroxide (Mylanta) 15 mL PO 1 hour before bedtime and 3 hours after mealtime and at bedtime.

Ranitidine (Zantac) 300 mg PO at bedtime.

Sucralfate/Carafate 1 g or 10ml suspension (500mg / 5mL) 1 hour before meals and at bedtime.

Problem number one that I identified for Mr. C is the desire for bariatric surgery without any expressed attempts at losing weight. He has been heavy most of his life which may indicate some genetic predisposition but even with the surgery it is very important that patients practice self-control in making better choices with diet and exercise (Mayo Clinic, 2017).  Problem number two is type two diabetes. Mr. C would require some more testing to diagnose (A1C) but with the lifestyle choices he has made he along with other comorbidities such as obstructive sleep apnea, low HDLs and high triglycerides, he is definitely at risk for decreased insulin sensitivity leading to a whole host of problems (Mayo Clinic, 2017). Problem number three is the hyperlipidemia  as evidence by the lab values provided. Hyperlipidemia can lead to atherosclerosis, which in turn can lead to much more serious problems like stroke, heart attack, and death (Lewis, Bucher, Heitkemper, & Harding, 2017). Problem number four is the potential for coronary artery disease (CAD). Mr. C displays a lot of risk factors associated with CAD such as obesity, sedentary lifestyle, hyperlipidemia and hypertension (Lewis, Bucher, Heitkemper, & Harding, 2017). Problem five is his mental well-being. Stress is a risk factor for all of the other problems listed before this point. Physiologically cortisol levels increase the way the body stores fat, decreases metabolism, decreases the secretion of testosterone all of which contributes to Mr. Cs eating habits, weight gain, blood glucose, and perpetuates the whole negative state of health and of consciousness (American Psychological Association, 2018).

Introduction

Sociologists use theory to study society. In science, theory is used to develop a deeper understanding of the universe. Although abstract, sociologists use theory to expand on original ideas and develop practical solutions to problems. In sociology, there are three main sociological theories or perspectives: functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist. Each of these perspectives has a distinct worldview, or interpretation, of the social world and human interaction:

• The functionalist perspective presents the world as a system of inter-related parts, where all parts must work together for society to function.
  • For example, if we looked at sports teams, the functionalist perspective would argue that sports teams serve a purpose for society. They have a particular utility that helps society function properly. What purpose do sports teams have? Do they provide us with entertainment? Some people with jobs? Do they help to form a bond between people who otherwise would not be connected? The functionalist perspective would see all of these reasons as important functions of sports teams.
• The conflict perspective disagrees, seeing society as an arena made up of groups competing over scarce resources in which there are issues of power and structural inequality.
  • The conflict perspective would see sports teams as groups competing over scarce resources. Those resources may be a title, fans, finances, or athletes. With this struggle between teams, some come out on top and others at the bottom. Thus, there is inherently inequality in sports teams.
• Symbolic interactionism examines the symbols and social meanings we attach to individuals, behavior, objects, or interaction in face-to-face exchanges on a daily basis. The focus is more microcosmic than that of both functionalism and conflict perspective.
  • Since the symbolic interactionist perspective is a micro-level perspective it will look at the interactions that go on between individuals and small groups in sports teams. Are there symbols that exist between players on teams? Think of the gestures that are used by baseball players as an example. This perspective also looks at how communication differs for people on sports teams than it does for those in other groups. In football, for example, tackling is an acceptable form of interaction. That is not the case in an office setting.

As you can see, each of these three perspectives proposes a framework for interpreting encountered social phenomenon.
