Critical thinking involves real outcomes that can be measured, predicted, and—perhaps for the negative life events—avoided” (Butler, 2012, p. 725). In 2013, studies by Grossmann, Varnum, Kitayama, and Nisbett concluded that wise reasoning, rather than intelligence, was a predictor of well-being. In 2017, Dr. Butler and her colleagues, referencing the Grossmann study and based on their own research, determined that the ability to think critically was a better predictor of effective life decisions than was intelligence (Butler, Pentoney, & Bong, 2017). Opportunity to be politically involved in community- Opportunities to be involved in political matters are endless these days. I feel as a Nurse Practitioner I need to be cautious of how I represent my profession and ensure that I use EBP to be professional regarding change. In the past I have donated to AANP PAC in support of legislative change that impacts our profession specifically. In the past I have reached out to my areas congressman (without response) and advocated for improved scope of practice for Nurse Practitioners in the State of Florida. I come from areas of Full Practice Authority (FPA) and am shocked by the Florida reduced practice restrictions. Florida is considered Restricted Practice, which means the state practice and/or laws regarding licensure are restrictive and require physician oversight (AANP, 2021). This professional baffles me and I believe it reduces access for patients to seek care from all providers that could be readily available to them. This is especially unnecessary in the times of COVID-19 and creates a barrier to care. In addition, the cost of collaboration agreements can cost several thousand dollars per month, which arguably questions the ethical nature of this supervision (Sibilla, 2020). Area of political competency that needs further development- As a student and as a professional I know there are always areas that need further development. To improve my political competence it would be wise to improve my understanding of legislative processes, as it can take sometimes up to ten years to complete (Handzel, 2021). Being prepared with EBP and organized with the specifics of what I am advocating for, I can meet with my local leaders to discuss the general importance of ideas. Having focused, yet brief, conversation will help start a relationship to start the legislative process (Handzel, 2021). Neuropsychology, by definition, is the study of the relationship between the human brain and human behavior (Jackson & Milberg, 2018). There are many different theories about the relationship between biological, psychological, cognitive, emotional, social, cultural and interpersonal factors influential in psychopathology. Psychopathological development is a process that is formed over the human lifespan. There are many influential pieces of psychopathology—personal experiences across the lifespan influence this developmental process. For example, parents, friends, school relationships, sexual partners are significantly influential in development. (Butcher & Kendall, 2018). Parents play a significant role in the influence of development of their children. This is related to genetic factors, the ability to control children’s exposures and direct interactions with their environment, and choices about environment. These key influential factors will influence a child development across their lifespan. (Barker & Ramchandani, 2017). Biological factors that affect the development of psychopathology are factors with a physical cause. Physical causes include anything that physically plays a role in psychopathology development. A few examples of these include neuroanatomy, genetics, prenatal exposure, and exposure to toxins. Psychological, interpersonal, and emotional factors are related to behavioral, cognitive, and emotional development. Most psychological factors develop and change throughout a person’s life. Different life experiences within a person’s environment include a broad range between having all emotional needs met vs being a victim of abuse. Social and cultural advantages/disparities also are key players in the development of psychopathology. Having access to proper education, health care, safety, and secure surroundings helps solidify development of psychopathology. While not having adequate access to educational opportunities, health care, or a safe environment will affect the plasticity of the developing brain, resulting in changed behavior. Having protective factors in place reassures the human brain and result in the development of psychopathology. Being subjected to positive outside opportunities in many forms assists the development systems, resulting in brain development, positive social behavior, and cultural beliefs. The framework of psychopathology has many implications concerning different origins, assessment processes, levels of classifications, methods of prevention and treatment. (Butcher & Kendall, 2018).
