identify a problem or concern in your community, organization, etc. that has the capacity to be legislated. 2025

As you have discovered through this course, nurses are influential members of the community and the political system. Therefore, for the purposes of this assignment you will identify a problem or concern in your community, organization, etc. that has the capacity to be legislated. You will conduct research and state a proposal. Through the legislative process, your proposal for the problem or concern may influence an idea for change into a law. First, refer to the “How a Bill Becomes a Law” media. http://lc.gcumedia.com/zwebassets/courseMaterialPages/nrs440v_how-a-bill-becomes-a-law-v2.1.php/. Then, view the “Bill to Law Process” to watch the scenario. After viewing the scenario, refer to the “Legislative Assignment.” You will need to save the document first in order to use it. Submit the assignment to the instructor. You also reserve the right to submit your completed proposal to the respective government official. However, this is optional. If you select to submit your proposal as a part of the legislative process, refer to “Find Your Representative” or research the contact information on your own. ( 600-700 words. Find a topic that actually can be legislated (made into a law). It could be a health issue in your community. An example of a problem that troubles me is why restaurant food that is left over is thrown out each night instead of saving and offering it to soup kitchens when 25% of our population has “food insecurity”. Such a topic could be developed into a proposal following the steps on the form. APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.) Legislative Worksheet (SBAR Format) – How a Bill Becomes a Law SITUATION: IS THIS SOMETHING THAN CAN BE LEGISLATED? Identify the problem/concern: State your proposal/idea. BACKGROUND: DO YOUR RESEARCH Include studies, reports, personal experience, or anecdotal stories related to your proposal. Has there been similar legislation introduced and/or passed in other states? If so, include it. ASSESSMENT: FINANCES AND STAKEHOLDERS Identify financial impact if any (e.g., added costs, cost savings, increased revenue): Identify stakeholder groups that would support this bill: Identify people/groups that would oppose this bill: RECOMMENDATION Make an appointment with your legislator to discuss your proposal.

Case study: Healthcare Data Standardization 2025

Case Study Read the following case study: A small community hospital in the Midwest has used a homegrown information system for years. The system began in the early 1970s with a financial module. Over time, additional modules were added. A limited number of departments selected a commercial system and interfaces were used to integrate these into the overall functionality of the hospital information system. Except for physicians, most in-house clinical or care-related documentation is online. However, about 15% to 20% of this documentation is done by free text and is not effectively searchable. In addition, the screens, including the drop-down and default values, were built using terms selected by the in-house development team in consultation with clinical staff; thus there is no data dictionary or specific standard language. In the last few years, the hospital has purchased two outpatient clinics (obstetrics and mental health) and a number of local doctor practices. The clinics and doctors’ offices are now being converted to the hospital administrative systems. A few of the clinical applications that are tied directly to the administrative systems such as order entry and results reporting are also being installed. A major change is being planned. A new chief information officer (CIO) was hired last year and she has appointed a chief medical information officer (CMIO) and a chief nursing information officer (CNIO). No other significant staff changes were made. With her team in place, one of the CIO’s first activities was to complete an inventory of all applications. Rather than continue to build, a decision was made to switch to a commercial vendor and the hospital selected a commercial system. As a member of the clinical staff with informatics education, the CIO has requested that you develop a training and information presentation for the clinical staff that will: · Identify two or more issues with the existing system · Provide staff with appropriate “work-around” for using the existing system · Provide an overview of two of the standard languages used within the new system including discipline or specialty, updating frequency, and available cross-maps o One standard language should pertain only to nursing o One standard language should be multidisciplinary. · Obtain clinical staff input, using a five-question survey, of specific methods to support transition to the new system; questions should be open-ended. PowerPoint Presentation Directions: 1. Review the case study. 2. Download the provided PowerPoint template to create a presentation that includes: · Your name on the title slide of the presentation · Identification of two or more issues with existing system · Identification of “work-a-round” solutions when using existing system · Overview of standard language used only in nursing · Overview of multidisciplinary standard language · Set of five (5) open-ended survey questions for staff input on transitioning to the new system · Presentation is free of spelling and grammar errors. 2. Medical Office Management-Assignment 4 2025

Part A: Kayla Christianson, CMA, has been employed six years by the cardiology practice of three physicians. She is a graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited school. Furthermore, Kayla received extensive hands-on training performing ECGs while doing her required externship. Kayla has completed an ECG ordered by Dr. Hsu for Mrs. Warner, a 76-year-old patient. Dr. Hsu, Kayla’s boss, has telephoned her explaining that he was behind schedule doing rounds at the hospital. He asked her to do him a favor and interpret Mrs. Warner’s ECG, sign his name, and fax the report to Mrs. Warner’s referring internist who is expecting the results. Provide detailed answers for each of the following questions. Your response should be two (2) pages in length. · Given the scope of Kayla’s education, training, and years of experience as a CMA, would this favor fall within the AAMA guidelines of her responsibilities? · Would any portion of Dr. Hsu’s request fall within the guidelines? If so, which portion(s)? Is an exception to these guidelines ever allowed? · How should Kayla respond to Dr. Hsu? Part B: For more than two years, medical assistant Linda Lewis had been employed by Drs. Norek and Klein, who are gerontologists. Also on staff are two registered nurses, a medical laboratory technician, and a medical social worker. The daughter of one of the doctor’s patients has just called the office. She is very distraught at the seemingly diminished capacity of her mother and insists on speaking to the doctor. Linda explains that both physicians take only emergency calls during patient appointment hours, but that she will take a detailed message. This caller, however, suggests that not only should her call be considered an emergency, but that she will sue the doctor if the call is not handled accordingly. Provide detailed answers for each of the following questions. Your response should be two (2) pages in length. · What should Linda do immediately to diffuse the situation? · Is this clearly a case when the call should be passed on to one of the registered nurses or the medical social worker? · Is this a case when the physician should be called to the telephone because of the threat of an impending suit? · How could Linda ascertain whether or not this is indeed an emergency? Is it up to her, as a medical assistant, to make such a determination? · Because this is the patient’s daughter rather than the patient herself, does Linda have any reason to enter into a conversation with the caller? Could Linda be ethically bound by confidentiality not to admit the woman’s mother is a patient?

Dogs are sometimes fierce protectors that can attack anyone they feel is threatening a family. In the old days, dogs were not considered companions, but seen more as working animals. That’s what we can all call a red-letter day! Do you think dogs are smarter than people? On a beautiful fall day, my family enjoys picnicking at a quiet beach we know that has a blue lagoon surrounded by rustic picnic tables and tall, green pines. I really like dogs. The whole family grabs sweaters and corduroys, Mom packs a cheese sandwich picnic basket with all the junk food we never get to taste otherwise, and we jump into Dad’s old blue jalopy and head out for one last day of fun before all the hub-bub of school gets into swing. My brother is a great Jayvee football quarterback, my older red-headed sister is a cheerleader complete with red pom-poms, and I play cymbals and drums in the school pep band, so we are usually very tied up in school activities soon after school starts. That dog can open the refrigerator and grab a can of soda! I really enjoy the pep band; it’s fun to get all dressed up in my red band uniform and beat those shiny drums during a game. At the end of a great day of flying kites, chasing each other around the lagoon, and eating great junk food, we all go home extremely tired and extremely happy. A day with my dog. My family comes in all shapes, ages, sizes, and hair colors, but no matter what we look like, we ALL love to eat. As night falls and my father drives the old beat-up car towards home, most of us finish up the cheese sandwiches and chips and doze off after a day of fun.
