Organizational Foundations 2025

Organizational Foundations As you strive to grow in your leadership skills and abilities, you will find that the context in which you work influences your motivation and areas of focus. In a similar vein, your commitment to developing professionally can contribute toward organizational effectiveness. To that end, it is critical to recognize the importance of organizational culture and climate. In particular, through this week’s Learning Resources, you may consider several questions: How do an organization’s mission, vision, and values relate to its culture? What is the difference between culture and climate? Moreover, how are culture and climate manifested within the organization? For this Discussion, you explore the culture and climate of your current organization or one with which you are familiar. You also consider decisions and day-to-day practices and the way they relate to the organization’s mission, vision, and values. To prepare: Review the information related to planning and decision making in health care organizations presented in the textbook, Leadership Roles and Management Functions in Nursing: Theory and Application. Consider how planning and decision making relate to an organization’s mission, vision, and values, as well as its culture and its climate. Familiarize yourself with the mission, vision, and values of your organization or one with which you are familiar. Consider how the statements and actions of leaders and others within the organization support or demonstrate the organizational mission, vision, and values. In addition, note any apparent discrepancies between word and deed. Think about how this translates into expectations for direct service providers. Note any data or artifacts that seem to indicate whether behaviors within the organization are congruent with its mission, vision, and values. Begin to examine and reflect on the culture and climate of the organization. How do culture and climate differ? Why is it important for you, as a master’s-prepared nurse leader, to be cognizant of these matters? Post a description of your selected organization’s mission, vision, and values. APA formatt. Describe relevant data, or artifacts, words, and actions of leaders and others in the organization that support, or perhaps appear to contradict the organization’s mission, vision, and values statement. In addition, discuss the organization’s culture and its climate, differentiating between the two. Explain why examining these matters is significant to your role as a nurse leader. Required Readings Marquis, B. L., & Huston, C. J. (2015). Leadership roles and management functions in nursing: Theory and application (8th ed.). Philadelphia, PA: Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins. Chapter 1, “Decision Making, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking: Requisites for Successful Leadership and Management, and Clinical Reasoning” Chapter 1 provides information relevant to this week’s Discussion and serves as a foundation for topics explored in future weeks of the course. The authors note that decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, and critical reasoning are integral to both leadership and management and beneficial as one examines leadership and management issues. As you read this chapter, focus primarily on the “Decision Making in Organizations” section. Chapter 7, “Strategic and Operational Planning” This chapter introduces planning and highlights some of the trends that are likely to impact health care organizations now and in the future. It also addresses vision and mission statements, which are essential for guiding planning and decision making in health care settings. Chapter 12, “Organizational Structure” “Organizational Culture” (pp. 260–286) This section of the chapter addresses organizational culture.

CATHERINE OWENS ONLY 2025

Assignment: Adaptive Response As an advanced practice nurse, you will examine patients presenting with a variety of disorders. You must, therefore, understand how the body normally functions so that you can identify when it is reacting to changes. Often, when changes occur in body systems, the body reacts with compensatory mechanisms. These compensatory mechanisms, such as adaptive responses, might be signs and symptoms of alterations or underlying disorders. In the clinical setting, you use these responses, along with other patient factors, to lead you to a diagnosis. Consider the following scenarios: Scenario 1: Jennifer is a 2-year-old female who presents with her mother. Mom is concerned because Jennifer has been “running a temperature” for the last 3 days. Mom says that Jennifer is usually healthy and has no significant medical history. She was in her usual state of good health until 3 days ago when she started to get fussy, would not eat her breakfast, and would not sit still for her favorite television cartoon. Since then she has had a fever off and on, anywhere between 101oF and today’s high of 103.2oF. Mom has been giving her ibuprofen, but when the fever went up to 103.2oF today, she felt that she should come in for evaluation. A physical examination reveals a height and weight appropriate 2-year-old female who appears acutely unwell. Her skin is hot and dry. The tympanic membranes are slightly reddened on the periphery, but otherwise normal in appearance. The throat is erythematous with 4+ tonsils and diffuse exudates. Anterior cervical nodes are readily palpable and clearly tender to touch on the left side. The child indicates that her throat hurts “a lot” and it is painful to swallow. Vital signs reveal a temperature of 102.8oF, a pulse of 128 beats per minute, and a respiratory rate of 24 beats per minute. Scenario 2: Jack is a 27-year-old male who presents with redness and irritation of his hands. He reports that he has never had a problem like this before, but about 2 weeks ago he noticed that both his hands seemed to be really red and flaky. He denies any discomfort, stating that sometimes they feel “a little bit hot,” but otherwise they feel fine. He does not understand why they are so red. His wife told him that he might have an allergy and he should get some steroid cream. Jack has no known allergies and no significant medical history except for recurrent ear infections as a child. He denies any traumatic injury or known exposure to irritants. He is a maintenance engineer in a newspaper building and admits that he often works with abrasive solvents and chemicals. Normally he wears protective gloves, but lately they seem to be in short supply so sometimes he does not use them. He has exposed his hands to some of these cleaning fluids, but says that it never hurt and he always washed his hands when he was finished. Scenario 3: Martha is a 65-year-old woman who recently retired from her job as an administrative assistant at a local hospital. Her medical history is significant for hypertension, which has been controlled for years with hydrochlorothiazide. She reports that lately she is having a lot of trouble sleeping, she occasionally feels like she has a “racing heartbeat,” and she is losing her appetite. She emphasizes that she is not hungry like she used to be. The only significant change that has occurred lately in her life is that her 87-year-old mother moved into her home a few years ago. Mom had always been healthy, but she fell down a flight of stairs and broke her hip. Her recovery was a difficult one, as she has lost a lot of mobility and independence and needs to rely on her daughter for assistance with activities of daily living. Martha says it is not the retirement she dreamed about, but she is an only child and is happy to care for her mother. Mom wakes up early in the morning, likes to bathe every day, and has always eaten 5 small meals daily. Martha has to put a lot of time into caring for her mother, so it is almost a “blessing” that Martha is sleeping and eating less. She is worried about her own health though and wants to know why, at her age, she suddenly needs less sleep. To Prepare Review the three scenarios, as well as Chapter 6 in the Huether and McCance text. Identify the pathophysiology of the disorders presented in each of the three scenarios, including their associated alterations. Consider the adaptive responses to the alterations. Review the examples of “Mind Maps—Dementia, Endocarditis, and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)” media in this week’s Learning Resources. Then select one of the disorders you identified from the scenarios. Use the examples in the media as a guide to construct a mind map for the disorder you selected. Consider the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, and diagnosis of the disorder, as well as any adaptive responses to alterations. Review the Application Assignment Rubric found under Course Information To Complete Write a 2- to 3-page paper excluding the title page, reference page and Mind Map that addresses the following: For each of the three scenarios explain the pathophysiology, associated alterations and the patients’ adaptive responses to the alterations caused by the disease processes. You are required to discuss all three scenarios within the paper component of this assignment. Construct one mind map on a selected disorder presented in one of the scenarios. Your Mind Map must include the epidemiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, and diagnosis of the disorder, as well as any adaptive responses to alterations.

MHA601 week2 discussion 1(300 words) MHA601 week 2 discussion 2(300 words) This week, Discussion 1: asks students to locate a quality improvement & cost saving project implemented in a healthcare setting such as hospital, clinic, nursing home, assisting living, and homecare in the United States. Take a moment to read Section 4.4 Stakeholder Dynamics in the required textbook. You may not be able to find all needed information, which is fine as long as you indicate “no available information found in the article” in your response. Please reach out to your instructor if you have difficulty finding a project that was carried out in the United States. The U.S. healthcare system has been recognized as a high-cost delivery system with relatively poor quality outcomes, and this situation has not been improved to some extents (Ewing, 2013). Royer asserted that: Public and private payers have responded to these issues with: 1) financial incentives to improve care outcomes; and 2) more stringent regulations for collecting data on and reporting medical errors and indicators of poor care. Executives and managers in leading health care organizations have recognized poor care coordination as an underlying cause of poor care outcomes, and undertaken large scale organizational process change initiatives to improve quality as well as to reduce costs. (as cited in Frates, 2014, Section 3.2, para. 4) In the required textbook, Table 3.1: Differentiating Factors for Organization Cost Reduction Efforts lists four differentiators, speed, accountability, scope of change, and LEAN perspective (Frates, 2014). Successful efforts lead to measurable improvements such as less harm due to preventable errors, better patient health outcome and satisfaction, shorter waiting times, etc. The healthcare organizations benefit in a long-run because of reduced capital investments and ongoing expenditures, and an improved reputation that results from better quality care and service. Discussion 2 covers teams Delivery healthcare heavily relies on teamwork. Effective teamwork can enhance patient safety, improve quality of patient care, and reduce workload and burnout issues among healthcare professionals. But simply installing a team structure does not guarantee the team will operative effectively (Ezziane et al., 2012). Frates (2014) highlighted four attributes for both functional and dysfunctional teams in Table 4.2. Working effectively in and as a team is an important skill that can be taught and bred. The best quality and cost-effective care and outcomes are attained only if diverse healthcare professionals work together, learn together, and engage in clinical audits of outcomes and innovations to ensure progress in practice and service (Reiss-Brennan, Briot, Savitz, Cannon, & Staheli, 2010). Ezziane and colleagues (2012) argued that effective communication, comprehensive decision making, safety awareness, the ability to resolve conflict, and strong leadership are key contributors to the development of successful healthcare teams.

2025 The McGill Model of Nursing is a theory that looks at the patient as a whole

class 2 unit 4 comment 2 2025

The McGill Model of Nursing is a theory that looks at the patient as a whole person and not just through the eyes of disease and sickness. This theory helps identify the patient with loving family members involved in the care, as an individual person, and as a person with desires and goals in life (Wright & Gross, 2012). A study conducted on the end of life care on patients using the McGill Model, focused the study on family members of dying patients and how the transition from palliative to hospice care affected them. Furthermore, the study revealed the APN’s transition with the family from having hope of saving the patient to finding peace in the dying patient (Wright & Gross, 2012). The APN walks through this transition with the patient and family constantly observing the needs of the patient and family while making sure all the medical needs are meant as well. The Gestalt Theory is based on a person’s perception of a situation or event. This theory focuses on an event that people experience together but how differently each person can perceive the event (Butts & Rich, 2013, p 210). People tend to filter what they see and experience differently from one another much like when a family goes through the death of a loved one. Each family member shows different emotions or has different perspectives for example, one person may be angry and resentful of the situation while another might be the one at peace with it (Shaha, et el., 2011). Even though these two theories are unrelated they both can be utilized by the APN. The McGill Model looks at the patient and the family members involved in patients care as if they are all the same whereas, the Gestalt Theory focuses on individuals perception of the same situation but appreciates the different views of each person. These theories demonstrate a holistic approach on caring for the patient and can provide more meaningful care when combined. (Butts, J. B., & Rich, K. L. (2013).
