This assignment requires you to interview one person and requires an analysis of your interview experience.

Part I: Interview

Select a patient, a family member, or a friend to interview. Be sure  to focus on the interviewee’s experience as a patient, regardless of  whom you choose to interview.

Review The Joint Commission resource found in topic materials, which  provides some guidelines for creating spiritual assessment tools for  evaluating the spiritual needs of patients. Using this resource and any  other guidelines/examples that you can find, create your own tool for  assessing the spiritual needs of patients.

Your spiritual needs assessment survey must include a minimum of five  questions that can be answered during the interview. During the  interview, document the interviewee’s responses.

The transcript should include the questions asked and the answers  provided. Be sure to record the responses during the interview by taking  detailed notes. Omit specific names and other personal information  through which the interviewee can be determined.

Part II: Analysis

Write a 500-750 word analysis of your interview experience. Be sure  to exclude specific names and other personal information from the  interview. Instead, provide demographics such as sex, age, ethnicity,  and religion. Include the following in your response:

  1. What went well?
  2. Were there any barriers or challenges that inhibited your ability to  complete the assessment tool? How would you address these in the future  or change your assessment to better address these challenges?
  3. How can this tool assist you in providing appropriate interventions to meet the needs of your patient?
  4. Did you discover that illness and stress amplified the spiritual  concern and needs of your interviewee? Explain your answer with  examples.

Submit both the transcript of the interview and the analysis of your  results. This should be submitted as one document. The interview  transcript does not figure into the word count.

           In 2008, the Institute of Medicine partnered with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to not only assess, but also respond to the need of nursing profession transformation. Their report titled the “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” set a path for advancing the responsibilities or role of nurses in the United States. The report proposes eight recommendations: a nurse ought to practice to the full extent of his or her education and training; and a nurse should attain higher levels of training plus education through improved educational system that enhances seamless educational progression. Thirdly, nurses ought to be full partners with other healthcare practitioners in redesigning the United States healthcare practice. Finally, there is need for better data collection plus improved information infrastructure for effective workforce planning as well as policy making (RWJF & IOM, 2010).   

           Since 2010, various states across United States have established coalition to help realize the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report. One such action coalition is the Florida Action Coalition. This coalition, headquartered at the Florida Nursing Working Center, conducted a statewide study whose findings were used as a foundation for a training program of promoting nursing leadership. The coalition also established a program for emerging nurse leaders to provide a 90 day learning experience through group and individual coaching, online courses as well as webinars. The Florida Action Coalition’s website features graduates who are linked with new organizations searching for nurse leaders join their boards. So far, 18 out of 26 graduates of the initiative are working on policy making boards and other agencies. Finally, the coalition has partnered with the Florida Blue- a component of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association-to strengthen its ability to not only sustain itself, but also for statewide health improvement (FAC, 2018).

Evidence based nursing practice is important to be incorporated in order to provide quality patient care. These practices have been studied and researched with the intent to standardize and improve health care. Nurses prepared at a baccalaureate level are expected to be more familiar with current evidenced based practice since evidence based practice is part of the curriculum. The BSN is able to apply the evidence-based practice into their care thus resulting in quality patient care and positive patient outcomes. Two barriers include the nurse’s level of education, and senior nurses not willing to change. The ADN degree focuses more on clinical knowledge and skills whereas the BSN in addition incorporates evidence based practices and focuses on holistic patient care. With continuing education, nurses would be provided with the tools they need to deliver current evidence based care. Applying EBP to the bedside has been proven to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. According to Melnyk (2016), “A good place to start is by improving the level of education of nurses and investing funds in continuing programs and evidenced-based practice mentors to equip them with the skills needed to consistently deliver evidence-based care.” Another barrier may include nurses of seniority “seasoned nurses” not wanting to change and adapt to the current evidence based practices. For example, the nurse with twenty years experience may not have learned to use the EBP approach and want to stick to their old ways because it is easier for them. This type of behavior may be difficult to change. Wallis (2012), stated that “In order to make a change happen the nurse leaders should place enough EBP mentors at the bedside who can work hand in hand with clinicians to help them learn and implement skills consistently.” Positive encouragement and consistency may be key in creating change with experienced nurses. All nurses should share the same goal of providing the best quality patient care.
