Nursing today is continually changing and expanding.  Staying current on the latest best practices is essential.  Evidence-based practice is a philosophy of implementing the best practices and procedures that have been proven, through research and studies, to facilitate the most favorable outcomes.  In 2010 under the Obama administration and the Affordable Care Act, evidence-based practice (EBP) shifted health care from being based on a reimbursement system and quantity to a system based on evidence and quality (Laureate Education, 2018).  EBP is a long-term problem-solving approach to clinical practice.  These practices integrate evidence from research, clinical experience, theories, expert panels, patient values, and preferences (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).  

For this discussion assignment, I have chosen the Mayo Clinic website.  The Mayo Clinic is the oldest and largest medical group with several multispecialty facilities, combining medical practice with research and education on both a national and international level.  The Clinic has a united model of care that permits multi-disciplinary practice that fosters the team-orientated patient health care and accountability (Bakri & Mayo Clinic, 2014).  Mayo clinic’s mission statement is “To inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education and research” (Mayo Clinic, n. d.).

I believe that the Mayo Clinic is well-grounded in EBP, through the many research activities in which they are involved.  Through research, the Mayo Clinic has been involved in over a hundred medical breakthroughs.  All of these have contributed to the well-being of the patient population.  Good examples are their development of a rapid way to diagnose surgical specimens allowing their surgeons to explore, diagnose, and repair all in one operation.  Also, the mayo clinic isolated thyroxin, the principal hormone of the thyroid gland; only the second time, a pure hormone had been isolated, and the Mayo Clinic developed a DNA test to diagnose anthrax rapidly (Mayo clinic, n. d

Topic 1 DQ 1

Population health is defined as “the health outcomes of a group of individuals, including the distribution of such outcomes within the group” (Kindig & Stoddart, 2003, p. 381). The American Public Health Association (APHA) defines public health nursing as “the practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences” (American Public Health Association [APHA], 2013, p. 2). The nurse must first analysis and collect data before beginning a program for the population they will working with. The resources that are available and needed must be determined.

For example, my father-in-law was just diagnosed with prostate cancer which has spread to his spine, hips, and shoulders, after researching I discovered there are no hospice programs available in the area they live. Talking with the population in that area they don’t feel they need hospice services. This is a small community that had once been a booming coal mining town. Since the coal mines have closed and the population is composed mainly of elderly people living on social security and the majority are related spiritual and moral beliefs are shared. When speaking with the community this is a generation who strongly believes in taking care of their own family members. This is a community that doesn’t feel the need for outside help so, if programs were implemented the community would mostly likely not use the programs.

Stakeholders play an import role in establishing public health programs. Health promotion and education is often supported through partnerships with employers, faith-based organizations, schools, and health care providers for implementation of initiatives and reinforcement of health information (CDC, 2014). Working with soup kitchens can help provide people with a more balanced, health promoting diet. Many churches are willing to provide areas to hold meetings and educational programs. The public health nurse can visit soup kitchens to provide education on diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure while helping the community make healthy choices from the food available.

Discussion 1: Evaluating Nutrition Information

For this discussion, conduct an internet search for a nutrition question that interests you.  It could be about a particular food or a diet or how food might be beneficial for certain conditions.  Choose an article from your “search”.  Then evaluate the article based on the following criteria:

• On what kind of website does the information appear?  (.gov, .com, .net, .edu, etc)
• Is the author listed?  If not, can you determine who might have written it?  If so, is there any evidence that the author has some authority in the field of nutrition or health?  (qualifications, credentials [RD/RDN, MD, PhD, MS, etc]
• Who is the intended audience for this information?  General public or scholarly?  If scholarly, does it provide a bibliography or reference list?
• Are there any clues that the author might be biased?  (selling or promoting a product?  taking a personal stand based on social or political issues? other?)  If so, describe how the article is biased, if not, provide evidence that it is unbiased (ex. they offer both pros/cons; you can find related information from credible sources agreeing with the author, etc).
