Among the Resources in this module is the Rutherford (2008) article Standardized Nursing Language: What Does It Mean for Nursing Practice? In this article, the author recounts a visit to a local hospital to view the recent implementation of a new coding system.

During the visit, one of the nurses commented to her, “We document our care using standardized nursing languages but we don’t fully understand why we do” (Rutherford, 2008, para. 1). 

How would you respond to a comment such as this one?

To Prepare:

· Reflect on the role of a nurse leader as a knowledge worker.

· Consider how knowledge may be informed by data that is collected/accessed.

The Assignment:

In a 2- to 3-page paper, address the following:

· Explain how you would inform this nurse (and others) of the importance of standardized nursing terminologies.

· Describe the benefits and challenges of implementing standardized nursing terminologies in nursing practice. Be specific and provide examples.

· Be sure to support your paper with peer-reviewed research on standardized nursing terminologies that you consulted from the Library. 

  

Assignment 1: Applying Current Literature to Clinical Practice

Literature in psychotherapy differs from other areas of clinical practice. Generally, there are no clinical trials in psychotherapy because it is often neither appropriate nor ethical to have controls in psychotherapy research. This sometimes makes it more difficult to translate research findings into practice. In your role, however, you must be able to synthesize current literature and apply it to your own clients. For this Assignment, you begin practicing this skill by examining current literature on psychodynamic therapy and considering how it might translate into your own clinical practice.

To prepare:

· Review this week’s Learning Resources and reflect on the insights they provide.

· Select one of the psychodynamic therapy articles from the Learning Resources to evaluate for this Assignment. 

Note: In nursing practice, it is not uncommon to review current literature and share findings with your colleagues. Approach this Assignment as though you were presenting the information to your colleagues.

The Assignment

In a 5- to 10-slide PowerPoint presentation, address the following:

· Provide an overview of the article you selected.

o What population is under consideration?

o What was the specific intervention that was used? Is this a new intervention or one that was already used?

o What were the author’s claims?

· Explain the findings/outcomes of the study in the article. Include whether this will translate into practice with your own clients. If so, how? If not, why?

· Explain whether the limitations of the study might impact your ability to use the findings/outcomes presented in the article. Support your position with evidence-based literature.

Note: The presentation should be 5–10 slides, not including the title and reference slides. Include presenter notes (no more than ½ page per slide) and use tables and/or diagrams where appropriate. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from the article you selected. Support your approach with evidence-based literature.

 Practicum Journal Entry I 

You will submit a journal entry for Weeks 1-3. Journal entries need to connect your previous professional experience with your practice, competencies/concepts in the program, and the literature. Your journal entry should be week-based and sequential so that all journal entries are contained in one file.

1) Describe the observed activity (1point) (see attached file)

2) Using an evidence-based approach, analyze the problem, issue, or situation. Address questions posed in the weekly practicum pages if appropriate. (2 points)

This video examines the recent history of the quality improvement movement, including two pivotal IOM reports, To Err is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm. Dr. Donald Berwick introduces six dimensions of quality: safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, timeliness, efficiency, and equity. Other topics addressed include transparency, the prevention of adverse events, and the usefulness of international comparisons for quality assessment and improvement.

Topic: Oral Presentation

The goal of any oral presentation is to pass along the “right amount” of patient information to your preceptor(Clinical Instructor) in an efficient fashion. When done well, this enables you and your preceptor to quickly understand the patient’s issues and generate an appropriate plan of action.

As a general rule, oral presentations are shorter than written presentations as they should focus on the most active issues of the day (Chief Complaint).

Subjective– how patient feels and reports to you.

Objective– vital signs and pertinent physical exam findings; what you hear, feel, smell, and see.

Assessment– should include working diagnosis from presenting problem and prior diagnoses that are being actively addressed during the present appointment.

Plan – this is the area that should be very specific as if you are entering the orders.

Some of the most common stumbling blocks for students (other than nerves) include going into too much detail in the subjective and objective sections!

Discussion: Share with your peers your approach to oral presentations in the clinic setting and ways in which you have perfected your approach to communicating information about your patient to your preceptor. Share your PEARLS of Wisdom!
