Overview

This week’s assignment is also related to the ANA Code of Ethics – Provision 9. You might want to review provision 9 again. Advocating for the profession is important. Writing a letter is one of the ways a nurse can positively promote nursing and its causes. The purpose of this assignment is to write a professional letter to address the image of nursing or to promote a cause for nursing.

This assignment is worth 20 points.

Learning Objectives

· Distinguish the professional responsibilities that accompany the nursing profession.

· Define pressing issues that may arise as a nurse.

Directions

Read the letter writing handout. Then construct a professional letter using one of the two options below. Your letter will consist of proper address, correct salutation/greeting, body of the letter, proper closing, and contact information.

Option A: Write a letter on a current economic or political topic related directly to nursing. Address your letter to the appropriate person – You need to write to a person who is in a position to do something about the problem. For example, you should not write to the President to address a healthcare issue that needs to be passed in congress. You would want to address the correct Senator or representative from your state who will be voting on the issue. This is a professional letter, so letter form, grammar and punctuation is graded, too. This could be to a congressman or woman or to other legislators, to big business or corporations. Remember, there must be a close nursing link to write this letter. You might want to look at a professional organization website in order to look for options.

Option B: Write a letter to defend the image of nursing. Most often nursing is portrayed as less than professional in popular media, TV, advertising, greeting cards, etc.  Choose an example and write a professional letter to the appropriate person to tell them why you think they have portrayed nursing unprofessionally. Tell them how this affects the image of nursing and provide suggestions to change the situation. Look at popular TV shows, e-greetings, traditional cards advertising etc. to find an example. You can even “Google” to find some ideas.

Should an NP who is educationally prepared as an acute care NP work in an adult primary care setting?

CS/SB 614 authorizes  an ARNP to prescribe, dispense, administer, or order any drug, which would include controlled substances.

ARNP disciplinary sanctions are added to the bill in s. 456.072, F.S., (Section 5) to mirror a physician’s sanctions for prescribing or dispensing a controlled substance other in the course of professional practice or failing to meet practice standards. Additional acts for which discipline may be taken against an ARNP relating to practicing with controlled substances that are added to the Nurse Practice Act (Section 10) include:

 Presigning blank prescription forms.

 Prescribing, dispensing, or administering an amphetamine or sympathomimetic amine drug, except for specified conditions.

 Prescribing, dispensing, or administering certain hormones for muscle-building or athletic performance.

 Promoting or advertising a pharmacy on a prescription form unless the form also states that the prescription may be filled at the pharmacy of your choice.

 Prescribing, dispensing, or administering drugs, including controlled substances, other than in the course of his or her professional practice.

 Prescribing, dispensing, or administering a controlled substance to himself or herself.

 Prescribing, dispensing, or administering laetrile.

 Dispensing a controlled substance listed in Schedule II or Schedule III in violation of the requirements for dispensing practitioners in the Pharmacy Practice Act.

 Promoting or advertising controlled substances.

T.J. is a 76-year-old man that recently lost his wife.  He lives alone now in an ALF where he has some friends that he associates with.  They are “good for his overall well-being” claims the administrators of the facility who befriended T.J. when he lost his wife six months ago.  The facility that T.J. lives in is convenient for many aspects of his life, including entertainment and even some of the healthcare associates from neighboring clinics that have partnered with the facility to allow visits with the residents.  

Over the years, the associates from the neighboring clinic have grown close to some residents and have followed them during some of their crisis, both emotional and physical.  Christine, a nurse practitioner from a neighboring clinic, has followed T.J. for many years and is now assessing his fall risk through a tool called the “Hendrick Fall Risk Tool II” a popular means of assessing the fall risk that may exist for an elderly person. 

An entry by the ARNP recently on T.J. demonstrated that there was enough information, recognizing previous and present knowledge to utilize the tool to give T.J. a score representing his fall risk.  the entry reads: “T.J. is a 76-year-old that is evaluated today for his fall risk. He has a MedHx of BPH, COPD, seizures, eczema, and anxiety.  He has been seen monthly and he described some episodes of nocturia that still persists.  A list of his recent mediation includes Alprazolam, Phenytoin, Dutasteride, and ibuprofen prn.  By administering the Get Up and Go Test, we find that he only had a brief episode of not being able to rise but he performed well after that completing it in 12 seconds.  He demonstrates an improvement in his depression experienced in the past exhibited for several months after the loss of his spouse.  His friends at the facility keep him busy and he is much improved in his outlook for the future.”  C.
