I work as oncology and death can occur at any time to my patients. I usually offer a bit of anti-anxiety medication since an impending death may not always be welcomed. Some patients transitioning into the actively dying stage, living becomes exhausting. They become tired, weak, struggling to eat, they feel uncomfortable, and even after chemotherapy, they struggle to taste. Mostly I deal with Hospice patients, and a potential patient death usually waits for me each time I clock in.

My death view was shaped a long time before I joined nursing. During my childhood, I watched cancer eating away as well as taking the majority of my family members. I even have watched my closest friend struggle with cancer currently. After graduating from nursing school, offering back to the oncology community was the only logical thing I could do. The experience has enabled me to empathize with my patients as well as their families. My view on death involves overwhelming sadness, heart-wrenching as well as anxiety-inducing. After working with my oncology patients, my view of death has changed to a more peaceful perspective.

One day death will occur to each of us. Through working in the oncology, I have realized that accepting death as a part of life have assisted me to live more fully (Foss, 2015). My fear of death has been eased through believing that there is life after death.

Suicide, whether it be done by a mentally ill person or a mentally healthy person, has become a common discussion. During my nursing internship, a nurse that I was working with and I walked in to check up on a patient and found that she had committed suicide in her bathroom. Till this day I wonder what caused her to feel that life was not worth living anymore? According to Bioethics A Primer for Christians, “Within the story of my life I have the relative freedom of a creature, but it is not simply “my” life to do with as I please”. I agree with the author. As creatures of God we are given the chance to decide many things, but one does not have the right to choose if one should live or die since we are not the creator. Instead, one should seek help from our creator and others to deal with the difficulties that may arise in our lives instead of deciding to end it all.

The Author goes on to say, “Understanding compassion and care in this way, we seek to learn to stand with and beside those who suffer — with them as an equal, not as a lord over life and death, but determined not to abandon them as they live out their personal histories up against that limit of death which we all share. For us, therefore, the governing imperative should be not “minimize suffering, “but “maximize care.” Again, I agree with the author, we are not the creator to decide who lives or dies. Watching someone suffer is difficult but one can help the person by providing comfort and care.  

The first step of the EBP process is to develop a question from the nursing practice problem of interest.

Select a practice problem of interest to use as the focus of your research.

Start with the patient and identify the clinical problems or issues that arise from clinical care.

Following the PICOT format, write a PICOT statement in your selected practice problem area of interest, which is applicable to your proposed capstone project.

The PICOT statement will provide a framework for your capstone project (the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study).

Conduct a literature search to locate research articles focused on your selected practice problem of interest. This literature search should include both quantitative and qualitative peer-reviewed research articles to support your practice problem.

Select six peer-reviewed research articles which will be utilized through the next 5 weeks as reference sources. Be sure that some of the articles use qualitative research and that some use quantitative research. Create a reference list in which the six articles are listed. Beneath each reference include the article’s abstract. The completed assignment should have a title page and a reference list with abstracts. 

Suggestions for locating qualitative and quantitative research articles from credible sources:

1. Use a library database such as CINAHL Complete for your search.
2. Using the advanced search page check the box beside “Research Article” in the “Limit Your Results” section.
3. When setting up the search you can type your topic in the top box, then add quantitative or qualitative as a search term in one of the lower boxes. Research articles often are described as qualitative or quantitative.

To narrow/broaden your search, remove the words qualitative and quantitative and include words that narrow or broaden your main topic. For example: Diabetes and pediatric and dialysis. To determine what research design was used, review the abstract and the methods section of the article. The author will provide a description of data collection using qualitative or quantitative methods.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

 Proposing a business plan is important in nursing as this is being utilize to request for a new equipment, a design to a new service that will help in promoting care and quality service. A detailed plan includes structure, process, and outcome measures that will help in designing a framework to analyze department operations, evaluation programs, and also to determine achievement of departmental goals (Johnson & Smith, (2018). The project proposal for the business plan is all about promoting the use of ED interventions specifically for older patients that will reduce the occurrence of falls. Baptist hospital usually has older patients that younger ones as Florida is known to be the place for older people wherein they love the warm weather and the low cost of living. This project fits perfectly with the institution’s mission as the mission points out the importance of improving the health and well-being of individuals, and most of all to promote the sanctity and preservation of life and to maintain the high standards of the institution. The vision of the institution also emphasizes to offer a broad range of clinical services that are evidence-based and compassionately provided to ensure patient safety. With this, introducing a project about ED interventions focuses on patient’s safety while utilizing innovations. Baptist hospital always focuses on the strategic plan of implementing the latest technology to provide high-quality and compassionate care. The project focuses on older patients since most of the patients in ED are actually older and given that the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations for seniors are caused by falls (Isaranuwatchai, Perdrizet, Markle-Reid, & Hoch, 2017). Falls currently occurs in ED because of low prevention interventions. With the proper introduction and utilization of this ED preventions, a lot of cases of falls can be prevented. Roger’s diffusion of innovation refers to the process as people adopts to the new changes, ideas, and products being introduced. Initiating a new process in a department may become difficult as not all might be open to the new idea. But with correct introduction of the innovation especially in ED wherein we are currently experiencing patient falls among older patients, will be a good opportunity to promote the use of ED interventions. I will focus on giving a brief discussion about the use of ED interventions pointing out the benefits it can bring to the department and most especially on how it will enhance patient experience. To do this, I will apply the five stages of adoption process. First thing that needs to be done is to individually expose the stakeholders to innovation but lacks complete information and let them be curious. Second is getting them to become interested with the new idea wherein they will seek more information. Third is to let them visualize the use of the new intervention to their anticipated future situation. Fourth is to let them use the ED intervention. And lastly, to let them fully use the ED intervention so as to continue to promote patient safety and providing quality care. 

4-I really enjoyed reading your post. I agree that interaction is when one variable relies on the effects of another variable. I really like the example you gave about over weight men having higher cholesterol than overweight woman. This The variable being that if it is a man or woman that is over weight will affect how high the cholesterol is. 

5-If I was comparing chantix, nicotine patch, and placebo these three variables would be appropriate for ANOVA versus a t-test that compares less variables.

6-An interaction is when one variable is dependent on another variable. This means that if one variable changes it can affect the outcome of another variable. There are many factors that go into my job working as an Occupational therapy assistant at a hand and shoulder rehabilitation center. First the doctor that preforms surgery with efficiency. As therapists we need to do our jobs and follow protocol, to get the body part functioning properly again. The patient needs to do their job and complete their home exercise program as instructed by the therapist. All these variables will assist in allowing the patient to have the best possible outcome.

1. 24 HOUR NEWS REPORT: 

a. The student will write a one page report/outline after viewing one 30 minute news program. Be prepared to discuss one 24 hour news cycle (television and print news coverage) related to health and aging topics. (The lack of inclusion of aging issues is also of interest! Write what was reported on and instead of health & Aging issues!)

b. The student will select one day and watch one national news program (30 minutes in length) on TV (including commercials). (7-9 a.m. programs or 6:30 p.m. all major networks offer National News Programming.) UT has a TV turned to CNN all day everyday behind Starbucks in the Student Union if you do not have cable TV at home. 

c. The Student will and read one newspaper cover to cover, write a one page outline on what health related topics are found. Be prepared to discuss topics found and not found!  Be sure to look for how many, if any, articles are found related to health and/or aging related topics? Did the publication or news show list the sources of data utilized in the reporting? Additionally the student will provide a short (one to two page) examination (outline format is fine) of the method of presentation, examine and record the amount of time dedicated to a story and placement of the story in the newscast or newspaper (back page vs. front page). How much time was spent on commercials or advertisements, weather, sports?

Maximum grade: 10 points are available for successful completion of this assignment. Points will be awarded for identification of news sources (if mentioned) in the news broadcast, points will be awarded for identifying the time or space provided for aging/health topics. Points will be awarded for your summary outlining how much time and coverage is provided to health and aging issues in our mass media for one news cycle.
