The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was established in 2010, and would make many changes in many different areas of health care. I selected two areas of the act that I felt impacted my practice or would impact the future of my practice as an RN.

-The first section that affects my current practice would be Section 3024, Independence At Home Demonstration Program. This program focuses on in home care for patients with chronically ill conditions. It utilizes physicians and nurse practitioner driven primary care teams in the home settings (“Health Reform,” n.d.). This part of the PPACA affects my current nursing practice of working in an Emergency Department. Many people have chronic medical conditions that require them to seek medical help, and commonly they come to an Emergency Department for their conditions or are referred to the Emergency Department by their Primary Practitioner when they cannot be seen. By utilizing physicians and nurse practitioners and primary care that focuses on the in home part of care, it can help lower the costs and number of visits to an Emergency Department. By having trained medical staff that can see the patient in their home, and provide cares in the home setting, it can save costs for the patient, and the medical facilities. In the emergency department, we discharge many people home with chronic conditions who could benefit from health care visits in the home, and this program could assist with the in home care.

Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is the first major health care reform since Medicare and Medicaid were created in 1965. While some components of the PPACA went into effect in 2010, many of the major changes will be phased in over a period of four or more years. “The new law affords opportunities for individuals struggling to obtain or afford health insurance. It also affords nurses with increased opportunities in education and practice” (Kaplan, 2010). The PPACA has given an opportunity to a major section of U.S population to finally afford an insurance plan so that they can address their health like one needs to.

There are numerous parts of the PPACA that starts changes to the way health care quality is enhanced, investments are made in the workforce, and prevention of disease and wellness care are promoted. Significant investment is made in creating a larger, more diverse health care workforce through expanded subsidizing of grants and loans and financing to increase nursing education for basic and advanced education. Nurse managed centers, school health centers and community health centers which all offer health care services to helpless, underserved and vulnerable populations to receive additional supports (Kaplan, 2010).
