​The reengineering of healthcare has focused on reducing cost, improving quality, and increasing access to care.  Nurses are well-positioned to have a dramatic impact on all three areas with their unique perspectives on patient care and understanding of the communities that they serve (Cleveland et al., 2019).  Warren et al. (2019), as an example, contributed to cost containment and improved quality of care with the nurse-led development of a transitional care model to reduce the incidence of hospital readmission.  Focusing on the root cause of readmissions, the health care team was able to develop an intervention specifically developed to address obstacles patients experience in outpatient and community settings.

Governance is another area where nurse leaders have an opportunity to be impactful in healthcare change.  Nurses who are involved in advisory, non-profit, private, and public corporate boards bring the nursing perspective to these groups and have the opportunity to help shape policies with public health in mind (Harper & Benson, 2019).  Nurses are skilled at teamwork, problem-solving through critical thinking, and using evidence to support solutions, all of which are beneficial to helping their communities in board positions (Harper & Benson, 2019).
